Sublime escucharlos!
In many ways he represents to me, the last of a generation of great masters that emerged out of the mid to later 20th century. Gil Shaham also comes to mind. James’ timing, his turn of phrase is impeccable, I would say “truthful” where we actually sense the intention of the composer shine through. So much of the newer talent although they have incredible technical brilliance (which of course Ehnes has in spades) lack something profound to say and instead inject all sorts of affectations that interrupt the flow of the phrase and draw attention away from the actual music to themselves and their prowess. I’ve had the pleasure of playing in an orchestra he soloed with several times. What a privilege!
These great masters you are referring to, I'm sure include Itzhak Perlman and others.... but, none of them can play Sibelius with the musicality of Kyung Wha Chung.... it especially shows in phrasing of the slower, more dramatic parts of the first and second movements.... You should give a listen to Jiyoung Lim.... she was one of the more recent winners of Queen Elisabeth and has the profundity lacking in many of the younger artists
