I would really like to see Derek's 1935 Ford get the Kevin Tetz treatment. That truck is so cool, I think it needs some lipstick like this OBS one is getting.
fun fact. overtightened wheel nuts might SEEM sensible but more wheels fall off because the wheels have been OVERtightened than UNDERtightened. why? the studs (or bolts if so fitted) stretch the threaded area and eventually they SNAP
Im glad channels like yours and VGG include the parts where you struggle. It makes us weekend warriors not feel quite so bad when we encounter them ourselves. Keep em coming buddy!
I appreciate that you show the mistakes too. There is a big trend lately of cutting everything down and it creates such a false reality of car building. You end up having someone trying something and it isn’t like anyone on they saw on tv and UA-cam so they feel like they are failing. We all make mistakes and we all keep on learning!
I really appreciate the way you show the struggle and the mistakes. it makes the rest of us feel normal (what ever that is) I remember back when I was working as a mechanic changing those GM shocks and that darned hidden shock bolt. I found out they make a socket that fits the top of that stud, then put your wrench on the bolt and zip it off. thanks for sharing
It's pretty exciting seeing Derek's obs getting a work that needs done done to it I wonder if Derek's going to bring his dad's Buick two guys to get that painted in the near future
I'm glad you show your mistakes Kevin, shows you are human like the rest of us. Trucks looking great & I got where ya was going with the "Welcome back Carter" skit lol I'm only 49 .....
Kevin, I really respect the hell out of you. Simply because you don't act like your shit doesn't stink and you show us the mistakes and not just the highlights! I'll forever be a fan of yours. Nice one! 👍 Also, welcome back kotter 😂😂😂!!
lol! The camera rolls no matter what hell I happen to be going through in the moment.... It's fun to look at it and laugh!! Glad you're enjoying it... even at my expense! LOL! thanks man!
Love watching your channel. Gets me motivated to go out and work on my projects. I have a 1978 Chevy Monte Carlo sitting in a 2 car garage waiting for me to finish painting it. Last time it was on the road was 2005.
Kevin, you should always put the bolts head to the front of the vehicle. If the nut ever came off at least the bolt would still keep the suspension arms in place and wont fall apart on the interstate. Gravity and momentum kinda thing there. It is just good practice if nothing else! Thanks for another great video!
I absolutely felt your pain removing the upper shock nut. Among the most frustrating thing in the universe, an 1/8th of a turn at a time, on a bolt that begins to feel like it's 3 yards long. And take heart - I laughed out loud when you welcomed the cotter pin back! Job came out great, thank you for all the patience it took to do this and take us along. Have a great week ~ Chuck. EDIT: And that PACKARD.....oh my......🤤
Boy it must be nice working on stuff not from the rust belt like here in PA! I’m quite sure it’s going to be a sweet ride at the finish doing all the right things. As an owner of a TRUE 454SS,but a back half pro street. Yes I cut my 454ss in half
I LOVE IT!!! Cut em up~! We only get to create our dreams one at a time... give it hell!!! Yes, we're pretty fortunate here in middle Tennessee... Not much road salt... mild winters too.
I spent the 80s as an auto mechanic. Without a mentor I was the only mechanic for a small rental company. I made every one of those mistakes wish I could have worked with you and Derek back in the day. 😊
Haha! Yup I remember that sitcom series. Welcome Back Cottter. Teacher with this students. It was a great show. John Travolta was one of the students as well
Truck sitting in a hoist bay, arms out and under the truck. Kevin sits on the ground to work😂. There’s a Driveway mechanic screaming at you to use the hoist
Here comes the smart ass comment: of all the hardware falling onto the floor. Just glad the truck didn't fall off lift to the floor lol. Great video Kev.
I thought that was great. Thanks. Don't worry ,every one gets the part backwards once in awhile. Can't tell you how many times I have had to take something apart again.
Taking the nut off of the shock took a little while, for future reference try putting the vice grips between the spring after you drop the shock through the lower a arm
Great Safety tip on the tension available at the springs. You will have a serious bad day if you get hit by a part under tension. I like the project, but for a daily driver here in SDak probably most would want a lift kit. Getting hung up on snow is a real thing here.
It's Not a mistake it's a learning of love, in continue never endind betterment. It was correct for what knowledge you had at the time. It's time to update the once was to the shall be.
I’m not sure about this truck, but the outer upper ball joint nuts sometimes tend to rub the rubber boot. At least on a few of the vehicles I’ve done. I’ve had to pull the bolts and run them in from the bottom and have the nuts on the top.
Kevin! Why are they making the Body Guy work on Suspension? Keep up the good work. The threads on the shock are Trapezoidal threads, like what is used in a lead screw.
I wonder how many people comment that since you had that rotor off would have been a perfect time to pop out the busted stud and put in a new one unless the new wheel and tire combo that Derek picked needed different studs for it
Interesting video. Learned some great tips. Also, learned what not to do. I was curious why Kevin didn't replace the broken wheel stud before reassembling? Aren't they replaceable on that hub?
Should clock your ball joints before installing the spindles or knuckles so the cotter pins go in parallel to the spindle. Makes a world of difference.
1:22:45 That's Murphy's law #4 if I recall correctly.... "When working on your car and that bolt or wrench falls it will always find its way to the center of the car, the further most out of reach spot on the planet." or Murphy's law #4 b that says about the same except "...if there's a hole, floor drain or a crack look there and you'll find that socket, wrench or bolt you lost last year." Glad I could help. Signed ‐- Murphy's nephew.😅
Up your nose with a rubber hose 😂😂 Back in the 70s, when I was street rodding my 59 Chevy pickup, I think I reused ALL the old cotter pins and probably scrounged some from the bottom of the loose bolt trays. Well, at least I didn't use 6 penny nails like my buddy used on his 56 Ford F100.
Thanks for sharing the mistakes as well, I am definately learning! What was the rotarry tool you used with the fiber wheel and where can I get one? It is a great size! Thanks again.
Yeah and afterwards it took 45 minutes to get the bearing packer cleaned up, I had one that a guy said was the cats axx ( never understood that saying why something that was good is that) and used it once and threw it away.
Pretty sure those "gaskets" for the new springs are called isolators or in shade tree terms "no squeaky squeaky pads". Depends on where you're from I reckon 😉
I've been doing this as long as you have.... that being said PUT THE ADJUSTABLE WRENCHES IN THE BOTTOM DRAWER WHERE THEY BELONG! Us the correct sized wrench for those nuts so that you don't distort them with a loose wrench. I understand the new rotors and brakes idea, but I would never let a busted stud go either. it's only $2 to fix it and do it right for the next guy. C'mon man, I've looked up to you for many years. Do the job right... you're the one who showed me how.
Sacrificial anti-theft wheel studs. Nice. For peace of mind, I'd put all new studs and lug nuts on there. It's worth the minimal expense, especially on a truck of this caliber.
He banged one the bad lug nut on tight, then did the rest without noticing the wheel was not seated. Pulling the other lugs down caused stretch in the first lug nut. I had a shop do that to me. I always double check that the lugs still come off after getting a tire change.
I just removed my lower V-6 mounts and replaced them with a LS mount kit. You have to remove the lower control arms in order to get a back up wrench on the bolts. That wasn’t happening at this point in time so I just cut the nuts off for now. Those bolts fall off right into the lower control arms. Right where that piece of a bolt was removed. May take a look at it. At least you might stop a weird rattle.
Nothing ever really goes together right till you bleed on it a little. We all do dumb stuff, I’ve been in a parking lot, in pouring rain at night with a flash light looking for the three lug nuts that I was Sure I tightened.
I still can't wait till you get back onto the garbage Camaro and you get to the point where you put the rough skin on I just want to see how they do it because do they how would you weld it without it warping because it's so tight of an area and you'd be careful even with the back window scary stuff
Dang, truck looks great! Awesome work as usual man, appreciate you!
Thanks Derek!!! Can't wait to hand you the keys!!! #soon
You didn't know this was a complete restoration. Thanks buddy 😂❤

I definitely understand the temptation

Thanks man.... The struggle is REAL!!!! Not everything goes like we plan.

Mistakes are great comedy as well!!! Hey, we gotta laugh at ourselves, right? LOL! Thanks!!!
I'm glad to have this one down on all fours again and at the same level!!! Now we can measure for wheels and finish the paint!!!!
Ok maybe I laughed at the Mr Kotter joke a bit more than I should but now the show theme song is stuck in my head 😂😂
I like the all-thread press idea. May use that one pretty soon.
It really works!!!

I enjoyed your video on lowering the truck I learned a lot thanks Jerry from Grant mount Alabama
Loved the “welcome back cotter” reference.
Great video Kevin. It's always fun to watch a body man do mechanic's stuff. Now you know how I feel doing body work. Thank you for your time.
Makes for a great comedy team, been there done that.

The threads on the shock are Trapezoidal threads, like what is used in a lead screw.

Are you going to replace that broken Wheel stud? 😮
Kevin you were 10 when Welcome Back Kotter aired on tv and 14 when it went off the air. Funny.

great job but just a old aviation standard for bolts being installed head of bolt to direction of motion
