  • In this dog training tutorial we go through the steps to teach your puppy or adult dog how to perform the 'Middle' position between your legs, this is also something called a Peek-A-Boo, the pup needs to come from behind you, go through and then sit under you legs finishing by looking up at you, hence the cue 'pee-a-boo'. It's a fun trick to train your puppy as it's engaging and we can then add on different dog training behaviours after. Towards the end of this tutorial we will look at some ideas of what you can teach your pup after you train the Middle position.

    Are you using the verbal command "middle" before initiating the steps that lead up to the full behavior? The video makes it seem like you wait until it's all connected before giving it a name.

      Hi, thanks for the comment, in the tutorial I first train everything as a visual cue (so no words/verbal cue). The reason for this is dogs communicate visually through body language and if possible I prefer to teach the behaviour fully and make sure the dog understands the visual cue. When the dog know the visual cue and is reliably responding the to visual cue 3-5 time in a row I then move onto adding in the verbal cue. When adding the verbal cue make sure you say the word before any body movement, this way the dog will start to predict what happens after the sound (the visual cue they understand) and in time we can fade out the visual cue. Hope this helps.

      @@bestdog4169 thank you. He’s a bit crazy, very hyper, but we’re working on it. He has plenty of other things we need to work on, but one thing at a time - would you say that for something like this to really sink in takes weeks? months even? He is being quite responsive so far 👍

      @@kaznana2929 Hi Kaz, it one of the behaviours that they get quicker as the visual of your legs opening is strong for them and the fun element helps keep the training of it fun, try not to put a time on when to have the training complete and instead focus on the information that the dog is giving you, moving onto the next step as soon as they are ready.
      I would keep sessions short when training any behaviour and ideally do it a couple of times a day, something like 2-3 minutes of training this 2-3 times a day.

    I love this information but also how do make a dog that's 4 yrs old I adopted be off leash?she never goes in kitchen she's very good in general

    • @bestdog4169
      @bestdog4169  2 роки тому

      Hi, thank for your lovely comment and congrats on your adopted dog. For off leash you'll need to train recall, I have a video on that here:
      ua-cam.com/video/yu-5B4JIDPU/v-deo.html
      I would add another layer of control and management when training recall in an outside location especially as you have recently adopted your dog, for control and management I'd recommend a lone training line (10 meters is the norm), when using this I would also advise that you always attach it to the back connection of a body harness as your dog can pick up a lot of speed and we wouldn't want the dog to get a jerk on their neck as it could cause some damage.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi,
    Super video and well broken down. My only question is why you use the cue before the dog is in the middle position. In general we used to do this but in the last few years most trainers put the cue in when the dog is in the position.

    • @bestdog4169
      @bestdog4169  2 роки тому

      Hi Su, thanks for your comment, personally I want to remove the need for the visual cue here. We are using luring as the technique to train this, so we first work on teaching the dog what to do visually, then we fade out the food from view as much as possible. When we have the dog responding to the visual cue reliably we get a consistent behaviour from the dog. Then we want to add in a verbal cue before any visual so in time the dog will predict what happens after the sound (visual cue that they understand), with enough repetition the dog will start to move into position after hearing the sound. This is how the dog learns when to get into the position.
      That’s how I prefer to do it, dog training is a funny thing, lots of people have different theories on things. Hope this helps clarify it for you.

    How do you train something like this with a size mismatch? I am only 5ft tall and my doberman is an inch or two too tall...I would like reach him a calm down in the middle position but I cant lure him around because he's too tall (or I'm too short)!!

    • @bestdog4169
      @bestdog4169  2 роки тому

      Hi Sarah, yes you need to be mindful to the size difference, I would look at training him to perform a DOWN in the middle position instead of the sit, for the you would lure him lower and achieve this by moving your lure hand slowly and keeping in him a low movement position when you have him moving through your legs at a level that works for you, you can then start to lure into a full down position. You just wouldn't add movement like walking, instead work on an obedience HEEL position instead. Hope this helps!

  • @noodlechild666

    Is there anyway to teach this without luring? My dog detests luring and will generally refuse to to follow your hand, regardless of the value of the reward. Ive had great success with training him via free shaping (he is super smart and likes to think for himself) but i cant figure out to with this behaviour as its not something he naturally does.

    • @bestdog4169
      @bestdog4169  2 роки тому

      Hi, for this if you are free shaping I would use eye contact as the main way to communicate, you can try staying facing a corner or a room so you feet and legs touch the sides and then look under your legs as your dog looks at you with your head between your legs looking back away from the corner, if he looks at you mark so he comes to get the reward eventually build up to him coming further under your legs, gradually building up to the sit.
      Your legs apart will be come a big visual cue for this behaviour.
      I hope this can help you in some way.
