. What an incredible line-up. The great Ian Gillan at his best on vocals with a progressive punk-new wave-fusion-rock band. What fantastic chemistry, totally unique in the history of hard rock. What a performance. Pure energy, enthusiasm, humor, pure pleasure.
Fantastic moment in the great Ian Gillan 's carrer! Here he is intense, performer, really happy! Your fan base in Japan always have been strong. Wonderful moments!
I think if Deep Purple Mark 2 had reformed in 1978 with Gillan in this form would of been tremendous
But now we know Rainbow !
Gillan ❤
Gillan the best💜
This is my favourite Gillan look too : )
Voice was incredible! Thanks for all, Silver Voice!👏👏👏👏😉🌟💖👍

Several songs of Gillan's solo carreer are as a proto-speed metal. Incredible! Secret of the Dance is very fast! Remember moments like Fireball , Hard Lovin Man , Space Trunkin and other proto-thrash metal structures.
That's why he fit so well with the NWOBHM scene. There were also some punk influences sneaking into the music.
Secret of the dance, roller, bite the bullet, Sacre Bleu and of corse luisitania express.. What's the matter also
This is not proto speed metal. This IS speed metal.
Steve Bird did Secret ok but when Bernie Torme redid it......FFS, BLEW MY MIND!!! Absolutely the fastest heaviest....wow....fav! Sadly no video of Gillan\Torme doing it live anywhere...
@@metalig sadly both dead, but Bernie told me he would never be half the guitar player Steve was, "fighting man" off Mr universe, is one of Steve's world class guitar solos! R.I.P Stephen j.Byrd 1956-2016
Thank you so much for letting us enjoy too the fantastic Ian.I saw Purple a few weeks ago and they and Ian are still superb.
Furious fast heavy metal, hard rock.. Great performance!!!!!!
This is awesome! Gillan is on fire. Loved the Mr. Universe album. I still play my copy of the lp regularly. Great to see some decent live footage
Wow this is great. So much stuff pops up now that just wasnt accessible growing up in the 80s. Back then it was snippets here and there...this is like gold watching this to an avid Gillan lover
Gillan eсть Gillan.
yeah...1978 I saw Gillan with this band and the same program ! Iwas frightend by the hell of the loudness !! Ian seemed really happy at the time...and he was knockin' back the bottles of beer all the time !!!
What a joy to hear Gillan with is his fully intact
This is my fav "Gillan look" !! Bloody bearded and "short" hair ;)
Very sexy 😍
This is best look. Half - long hair fit him best...
Gillan Mk.1! Great stuff. Thank you. This band went on to do such great things, and they were already awesome.
Wow, Gillan is in top form here. Thanks for uploading!
Awesome performance, so glad it got preserved!
Wow this is a rare gem!
Wow never seen this footage before, i saw this line up live amazing
And the drummer Pete Barnacle is in very good shape too ! Quite unique for 1978 . Steve Byrd is into new wave and doing some Devo moves !
Budgie album from 1978, very unique... they were mixing different elements waaay back in 1971
nice ! I love how people speak English with an Accent ! the female introducer: Ian as Great as Ever ! The secret of the Dance, I Love that Song. :) Thanks To The Ian Gillan for Killer Lyrics, Over and Over , Lovingly ! Sweet Songs !! and the Laugh....ehhhahahahhaa cant see u in my bottle....like Genie, in a Bottle ! :)
(I dream of Genie !! LOL )
For sure beautiful
Still had the voice here.

RIP the great Steve Byrd
I am with you. Just learned this morning. Steve was just too subtle a player (and way too cool looking) to fit into the role of metal geetar hero. It was (musically) downhill all the way for the band after he was ousted.
What a motley crew: new wave guitar player , "skinhead" bass player, fusion keyboardist & rock singer all in one band ! The drummer's a mystery, but boy can this guy play ! I love the energy of this line-up. The first time I heard Gillan it was with Bernie Tormé and now it seems that he copied Steve Byrd's style on the albums that followed. When you listen to Bernie's solo stuff you see that his style is (and was) quite different.
I love both of them, Steve and Bernie.
John McCoy: Bass Guitar
Colin Towns: Keyboards
Steve Byrd: Guitar
Pete Barnacle: Drums
copy Steve Byrd? hahahahha I dont think Bernie was sitting around struggling for identity, he had it already..you are just laying on yr own perception..make sure you get thats all it is..
After hearing this,I thought about how much better it was with Bernie Torme. The only thing Torme "copied" were the chords, because the songs were already written ,but he certainly put his wild stamp on the Mr.Universe album versions.
Great stuff! The Japanese album from '78 was brilliant. Managed to get an old copy on cd but they should have remastered it along with all the more well known classic albums from the era (Mr Universe, Glory Road, Future Shock).
when on this tour they played Bangor univeristy in north Wales They stayed at my perents Hotel i was star struck to say the least ,and still in contact with john mcCoy to this day legend he is ,and the are all extreamly nice guys
0:28 Secret Of The Dance is the BEST!
WOW that was new to me. GREAT, but Ian voice was not in the best shape, but still better than in 2017. Love this, and want him back with his own band.
Oh yeah ...the "punkish"_ attitude of one mr. John mccoy 👍
I hope to find Gillan and his work he has made outside DP. And on vinyl of course.
Secret of the Dance is a fast track on the album but this broke the sound barrier. Rip roaring stuff
Great to see live footage from the 'Mr Universe' era. I was hoping for 'She Tears Me Down' or 'Fighting Man', but you can't have everything!
Estupendo, me encanta, aunque tenga pelo más corto.
0:29 Secret Of The Dance!
two people disliked this how is it possible haha they born with no ears?!
even then Gillan was forgetting the lyrics....and I saw him at the Rainbow in London when Blackmore came on for the encore and blew everyone else in the band off the stage...happy days = 0 )
the 79 gig wow u were there..1 yr too late for me
McCoy and Towns in place, but Liam Genocky on drums and Steve Byrd (RIP) on the banjolele.
Surely a big kick in the pants from just a short time previously (IGB and Scarabus). I'm sure Ian and Colin were enjoying the big surge in energy with this new chapter, and cutting loose on stage. I guess this is Steve Byrd and Pete Barnacle on guitar and drums?
Came here looking for John Gustafson, pleasantly surprised to find John McCoy. 🙂 By the way, the mix in this recording is excellent.
It took decades to see and enjoy this in more quality. in 1986 I attended a Belgian Deep Purple fanclubconvention. It was bloody hot and during the Eurocupfinals or something. Me not care about that shit so I took off to Belgium from The Netherlands. Marc Brans, chairman of Diep Peurpel(Yes spelled phonetically)welcomed us and let us enjoy a serie of copy's on VHS , some already too many times copied and thus quite blurry. Nonetheless very impressive and stayed in memory from that day on. Is this already out on official DVD? I think this post is just an improved copy of the original Japanese TV broadcast?
I have this copy too, and it is like yours quite blurry. But is this the complete show? I remember "Fighting Man" on there as well, but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyone know what happened to Peter Barnacle and Steve Byrd and why they didn't survive to the next album? Many of the songs from the Japanese only release first "Gillan" album were re-recorded with the new band that featured Bernie Torme on guitar and an old band-mate of Ian's from the 60s Episode Six days, Mick Underwood. As a piece of trivia, Mick also played with Ritchie in early 60s in The Outlaws.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Barnacle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Byrd just a little bit...
Been watching the show since '83, love the quality here. Did I miss an official release of this somehow, or is it from boot source.
Saw this line up with Bernie Torme supporting. The rest is etc.
Great to see some decent live footage
9:17 🎸🔥
Did bernie join after this line up
Should put Purple together. Imagine this Ian Gillan with Blackmore and Glover (after Dios departure from Rainbow)!!! Must be the greatest heavy hard rock band close before and during the NWoBHM
I wonder what happened to that boy’s camera @ 24:33, just a few seconds later his camera is gone. Odd. Great show Ian and crew performed eh? Smokin’.
0:29 I saw her in the gloom
As she moved across the room
The animal was burning in her eye
She took him by the hand
But he didn't understand her
He wouldn't be the one to satisfy
Got to wait no mistake
I've got to take my chance
Be there beware
The secret of the dance
I moved a little closer
So maybe i could show her
The way i felt the way i knew
It was more than a game
I was getting loaded
So i touched her and exploded
That was it i knew my life
Would never be the same
It's too late i can't escape
I went and blew my chance
And so i'll never know
The secret of the dance.
As she dances
Feel her power
Notice how her
Thighs entrance
And draw you to
The secret of the dance
Gillian must have been so humbled to have Andy Warhol on 🎸 guitar lol 😜 l
5:13- my name😂😂😂😂
Sorta like Dave Grohl doing Nevermind solo
Looks like John Belushi with the beard ;-) Still had a great a voice at the time, destroyed it with Sabbath unfortunately...
Spettacolo 🇮🇹🎤🤘⭐⭐⭐⭐♥️
Ther guitarist looks like one of the bad guys in the department store from Night of the Comet.
Great energy here - not sure about the facial hair, though!
Did he just invented "head-bangin'"??
Yes, watch earlier deep Purple concert with him
why do every band that I listen now sounds like a reworked copy of Budgie 😥1971... the original birds were squawking 🐦🦅
X ahora no che
