      TaShawnti Virgil Most are. Too many to say. You look for lettuces that are leaf lettuces or form very lose heads. Just leave the roots in the ground and most will send up new leaves.

      Gary Pilarchik I have so many questions. I have just planted a bunch of seeds. I'm realizing now there are actually grow schedules for each crop. What is the best method in getting my seeds to germinate? I am going to build the grow light box but haven't had a chance to get supplies so for the most part I keep them covered but ventilated and moist. Any other suggestions?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      mzshawnti22 Good starting mix, lots of light and about 70-75 degrees F. Yep and keep them moist.

    When do you start your pepper plants? By the way your straight forward, here is the info, go garden, style is awesome. The only garden channel I subscribe to.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      Stan Sullivan Thanks for subscribing. I decided a while back to say what I am doing and just show it.
      Peppers like warm soil. I start them about 1 or 2 weeks before my tomatoes are started. They seem to take longer to germinate and grow more slowly. I find 8-10 weeks before you would but them into the ground works to get a nice size pepper transplant. That includes moving them into a bigger transplant cup.

      Veronica Torres You will notice the tops dry up first and lighten up. Water when the top of the soil is dry.

    If you transplant lettuces to the garden under covers (floating row cover etc) do you still need to acclimate them first? Or does that protect them from the sun, wind and temp? Thank you!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 роки тому

      It is always good to give lettuce a few days of acclimation. they are tender leaves and the sun does a trick on them. Row covers help. If you have 2-3 days of cloudy skies they could go direct but if you have sunny days, I would acclimate them

    I'm on my first year growing from seed indoors. I have pepper and onions germinating right now. I pre-moistened the seed mixture prior to packing in cells. Then i bottom watered. Now i left the cells sitting in the water for about two hours by accident. I'm worried they have absorbed to much water and, in turn rot the seeds. Is this a possibility? Thanks for your shows. Very informative.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      ***** Youre fine. It cant over absorb. You just want the excess water dumped out that day so it can start to naturally dry out and all that.

    • @ezgreen16
      @ezgreen16 10 років тому

      Gary Pilarchik thanks for the reply! should i remove the dome to allow some evaporation. or just stop worrying and allow nature to run its course?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      ***** Take off the dome. Check it each day. I really dont use them. I think the create a home for fungus growth.

  • @richardgodke426
    @richardgodke426 10 років тому

    Great seedlings. I found my best result is to get the light one inch or closer to the grow light. To problem is you can not start as many plants in the same space. Why do you not move the cool season crop directly to your green house after germination? Does the cool temps slow them down?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      Richard Godke They actually spent a bit of time in the house and a lot were moved into bigger cups and put out. But I do it for room. I have move them to get room for the tomatoes and peppers. I also seed start some directly in the greenhouse and they are a little slower to get going. Gives me a variety of stages come planting time. I will put stuff in ground, in buckets and grow the to cutting size in greenhouse for an experiment this year.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      I was just saying the other day that you really dont need that much. Use 1/2 strength. It will do the trick for lettuces. If you grow large kales or cabbages, a full does when they get pretty big is fine. But you just don't need that much.

    Hello again! Sow the seeds for lettuce lollo biondo almost 2 weeks ago. Was so happy to see them break the surface but after a day they wilted. They are very tiny since they just emerged, it appears their stem rot, it has that brown color.
    I am from a tropical country, Philippines. Temp is between 75-95. the pots are out of the sun and always on a shade.
    i just sow seeds again this afternoon hoping to figure out how to prevent what happened from happening again.
    Your help will be very much appreciated Gary. Thanks!

    • @kitchengardeningdiary
      @kitchengardeningdiary 7 років тому

      I was just doing a research and assume that what happened was "damping off", not sure if I am correct. I realised too, that those seedlings I have tried spraying mist of water from the top developed this issue. I think I must stick to bottom watering for mys eed starts as you always say
      I thought spraying from the top with just a bit of water will keep them moist but it seems like they are just killing everything off.
      ill make sure to put cinnamon powder in all my seed starts.
      I hope you can still correct me if there is anything wrong I am doing or assuming.
      sorry for the long comments.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 років тому

      Yeah it can be damping off. Best way to raise seedling is to water from the bottom and keep surface dry. Cinnamon on top is great.

    Gary, do you start indoors just to get the extra time, or do you feel there are other benefits vs direct sowing?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому +1

      J&J Acres Couple reasons. Extra time, quicker produce to table even if its smaller. The pests can get my seedlings so the transplants tend to take hold better. And I find organizationally I seem to manage the space better by dropping in transplants. I use all the space.
      For instance. With my onions, they go in onion bed and they get tucked all over the place where ever there is space. Same with lettuces.
      And peas seem to rot in my area when the ground is wet an could, but I even drop transplants for them and they tend to do well.
      Best reason, probably is it gives me something to do inside, early and in my collapsible green house.

    Gary, great videos and info. If I start seeds indoors, do they have to be hardened before going in greenhouse? Also, if I start them in greenhouse, do they have to be hardened off before going in the garden? Thanks, Tom Bahnsen

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому

      tom From greenhouse to garden nope. From house to greenhouse... Try and put them out on a day that will be cloudy and I set mine under a rack of plants so it gets more shade than sun. After 4 or 5 days move them where you want in the greenhouse. And thanks!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 років тому

      Very glad to help. You need intense light. If you get direct sun, that works. But if you don't have direct sun, you need artificial light indoors.
