I'm starting my seeds today, 02/02/18. It's my first time growing kale, chives, basil, sage, cilantro, swiss chard, onion, thyme, parsley, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, couliflower, beet, okra, sweet corn, squash. My second season of eggplants, variety of pepper, cucumber, and tomatoes. I purchase some from your shop. I'm looking for all of your videos because you are the one who explain better the process from start to finish, beside my zone is 7 too. Thank you for teaching us your knowledges. Blessings!
Thank you for the video, very informative and easy to understand. I started kale last month and I just threw seeds in a pot. it has grown but I dont think they will be succesful after seeing this video. Im gonna start over. I have a bearded dragon and he loves kale. Where I live kale is not sold(mexico). so I decided to give it a try.
I am thoroughly enjoying your videos - you have an extremely clear presentation and packed with great information. I find starting seeds anxiety provoking because I’m looking to become nearly food self-sufficient, and just don’t have that much desire (money) to be light hearted about my seedlings failing...cheers to best practices!

Thank you, Gary, for ANOTHER GREAT 'HOW TO' video. I always learn something from you. I knew you grew Kale but couldn’t remember when. I’m in PA, zone 6a, but I think my microclimate is more similar to yours. I’ve had better luck with cold weather crops in the fall than Spring (like broccoli). But I’ll give kale a try this Spring! How long do you harvest them? Do they last past Spring for you? Thanks so much for your channel too! I find myself just searching for rusted garden videos on UA-cam for all my garden questions.

My plan is to try (3) different Collards this summer. I called JoAnne Fabric and the tuile is $1.49/yard to cover my hoops. I am going to use that rather than Agrabond bc it is see thru. I will find another place to use all the Agrabond I bought from Johnny's. Kay uses tuile so well in her garden. My soil is s/p rotten Oilseed Radish and it has lots of worms so I hope my lil experiment goes well and I can eat good and share:-)
Tulle is a great product to use. If you sun screen it, I know sounds weird it will last much longer. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com
To reduce/minimize the leggyness.. keep your little seed starts/seedling 3" away from your lights and lights on for 24 x7. Now..that is if you are using the T8 bulbs that are only 32 watts each. They wont get hot - you can easily touch them!... The higher wattage your bulb the hotter it will get, and you would likely cook your plants. Phillips Alto series - (5500K-6500K temp range)T8 Bulbs are THE BEST!..
Another great video. Thanks for sharing. I live in Texas. When would you suggest I start the Kale? I have never grown it before. I usually try to plant things like tomatoes right after Easter because of frost.
It will grow year round but I would grow it around the hot summers. You could definitely start it now and again in September. It will flower the 2nd year of growing.
Hello Gary - Thank you for the video! One question - do you keep the seeds covered with humidity domes and in the dark before they germinate and then sneak them under lights as soon as they germinate? I am starting some kale for fall planting now (zone 7) hence the question.
I never use humidity domes. And you dont want them in darkness. I turn the lights on early and want them to germinate into the light cycle. It help stops legginess. You can also start them on the Northside fo the house. Please subscribe if you have a chance (Thanks!) As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks Gary! Btw, I stumbled across the All American Selections channels and as soon as I heard the voice, I went “Hey, that’s our Gary!!!” 😀. Thank you for all your contributions to your gardening fan club (us!). I sowed Prizm Kale based on your review for it on that channel. Thanks again!
I'm totally new to this, but how long do the seed starts stay in the growlight box? I also get about 6-7 hours on my deck (I live in Georgia) how long can they be in the sun after the growlight box?
Hi Gary.We made a seed grow box as per your vid.we have a 1600 lumens 5000k bulb, the temp. is staying near 100 we think this would be to hot.what do you think?? thanks,Clyde.
ontimethatsme That is too hot. I think mine stayed at 75ish. Hmmm. You can make a bigger vent hole on the top of the lid. Mine was fairly big not snug. Let the heat rise up. I assume the container was the same size. You can also put vent holes in the sides to let air flow. Like the size of quarters of half dollars.
Thanks for the video...very helpful! I'm getting ready to grow kale for the first time this fall/winter here in Central Texas and I was told that I should pre-soak my kale (and spinach) seeds in water and in the fridge overnight before planting. I can't really find much online to substantiate this for kale. Any thoughts?
+aix2379 Presoaking helps but isnt needed. A soaking wet starting medium is just as good. The cold of the fridge isnt needed. If they are going into the ground just water then daily to they sprout. I soak beans and peas for about 4 hours that it for presoakers.
Can you sow them and put them outside in the cold and then let them grow? It is still cold here in CT. Is that what it means to sow them in cool weather? Some information is confusing and I need some exact information.
I'm doing my collards in grow bags with compost, perlite, peat, and fertilizer, garden lime and epsom salt I was wondering is this a good mix for them. I also have a self watering planter that I had potting mix from the store in it and had bush green bean in it would it b ok to put my collards in that's mix do I need to do anything to the mix before putting the collards in it
No I think that sounds good. Dont over doo the lime and epsom salt. Not much is needed. Please check out my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com
