I've had this snare for about a year now - this video sold me on it. I struggled for a long time to get it to sound like it does in this video (medium tuning) until just recently when I put a coated ambassador on it. I had been trying all sorts of Evans heads (I usually use Evans on all my snares) but this drum really shines with the ambassador.
I used the ambassador it’s great but I like the Evans uv1 on the metal snare more. The ambassador to me has a distinct sound that for me sound Better on my maple snare lol
@@JuniscrazyThis is why we have options. We all hear things slightly differently. There is no right or wrong. That's why I love Sounds Like A Drum. It's not good or bad. Right or wrong. It's just different sounds, and how you might incorporate them for yourself.
I want this snare so bad. That medium tuning is perfect. Edit- bought the snare and it’s the most incredible snare I’ve ever owned. Everything about it is premium. The way it feels, the way it sounds, the way it tunes so easily, the deep fat crack yet still maintaining a nice clear tone. The hardware and strainer is the smoothest thing I’ve ever felt. The starphonic line is absolutely incredible. I have numerous brass and steel snares from the SLP line like the slp sonic stainless steel and the slp black brass but man the starphonic line is on a different level. Now I want the starphonic stainless steel and starphonic brass now. Lol
mid and high tuning sounded amazing in this video but there was something off with the low tuning for me. had better luck yourself or got similar results?
Bought it yesterday.... the most incredibile snare not only in my big collection, vintage and not, but in the entire world.... i'm not gonna play with anything else.... astonished...
Bought one earlier this year and it is definitely my favorite. Through my 30 something years of drumming I've owned well over a 100 snare drums and this one is definitely in the top 10!!!
@@DonChul I've been buying and selling snare drums for about 20 years. Some of my favorites have been the undeniable ludwig black beauty from the 70's. I have 2. 1 engraved by john Aldridge. Also I'm a big copper guy. I have a gretsch 6.5 X14 USA hammered copper in antique burnt finish. Plus I have a very rare Dunnett copper snare drum that is also 6.5x14 8lug. Also have a extremely rare titanium Keplinger snare 8x14. I also have the snare in the video the Tama starphonic copper. That's just a small sample.
love this snare...but this dude can make a cereal box sound amazing...very strong rudiments...put in the time and you reap the rewards!!! you arent born with this kind of skill...you reach it through hours of diligent practice!!! as always great demo!!!
@@YungTama, I don't think he's a master OR a beast. Those are just two of his grown-ass kids. Methinks he's also got kids named, "Holy shit!" "Holy Funk!" "Got-dayum!" and "Nasty!!" running around somewhere. If you know him and see him anywhere, tell him he owe his kids' momma plenty of child support, dammit!!
Your drums always sound great and it would be bliss to achieve drum sounds like yours. Could you do a video about drum tuning? That would be greatly helpful.
Just bought this snare 3 days ago and it arrived yesterday, I’m already loving it and I put a coated ambassador on it. Does anyone have tuning suggestions?
Great video (as always)! Your specimen is tuned cleaner than the demo snare which I heard and played in my favorite drum shop the other day, but the overall sound is quite similar. To my taste, the copper shell rings a bit too much with its dark overtones, but apart from that, it's a great snare!
i think that's just low tuning is, plus the shell is pretty deep so you get a longer decay which is good for a low tuned drum. nothing a little moongel wont fix
Current Banter A Vintage Ambassador would give a touch of high overtones to lessen the dark qualities. There are a few more heads that would do the same but they don’t come to mind. Having a Coated Ambassador is an improvement over an Evans G1 I know for certain.
Hello Memphis Drum Shop! I have this snare, and I’m desperately seeking the medium tuning of your Starphonic. Do you have Drum Dial specs for that tuning or could you measure them with it? Thanks a lot and happy holidays ♥️
They are the starphonic freedom lugs so when you change heads the lugs and tension rods open up out of the way but don’t detach from the actual drum where you would maybe lose them on a stage and just makes for a super fast head change. I think the design is the best looking mass produced snare line on the market.

As soon as I get a new Tama snare I install Remo heads. So much more depth and grit compared to Evans.
I just placed an order for an ambassador so im excited. I too usually go with evans especially the HD dry.

Remo is dynamic duo with tama.. I install Remo p77 and perfectly i get tone that i want,

The low tuning is just perfect😍... I wantt it🥺
Medium tuning is truly perfect to my ear.
Gotta love deep snares on high tuning - great combo of "snap" and warmth
Allready the best snare of 2019

Absolutely killer. Love how copper is dry and dark, but not too dry and dark.

it's very interesting to hear the opinion of a well experienced drummer. if you don't mind, what are your favourite snares you've played?
DonChul I would love to know too!
Nathan Walsh good to know just ordered one, any comments on heads? I like ambassador batter and hazy emperor on bottoms.

Good god, I've been wanting this snare for years now. I will own one this year. I'll find the $$$. Oh yes, it will be mine.
It's got so much crack and still has body at higher tunings. Literally perfect
It's really great, all around snare, I do love it. But... is anybody here who likes the drummer? I think this guy is a master...

Damn that high tuning is so nice. Especially with looser snares. Awesome metal tone.
Finally got mine!
That medium tuning. Hot damn 🔥🔥
Unbelievable snare👌🏻
That medium tuning is the best sound ever.
Great snare sound on multiple tunings - thanks MDS for showing this one! Also great playing demonstrated, just like the instrument deserves!
Got this drum and it is amazing!
Звук отличный, качество записи супер!
Bought one now. Damnnnnnn.
got it now I want another one I need the high and med hahaha
Great demo. I'm sold.
God how I wish I could get back into orchestral drumming again! This would be the perfect drum for that!
What makes a good orchestral snare drum?

My next snare drum purchase. Looks like I might have everything I need in terms of range and that "it" sound

medium and high tuning !!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Medium is perfect ❤
Ma che spettacolo 💥💥💥💥
😫 Are you kidding me!!?? That’s sounds so butter man!!
it's sounds very fat.You can hit it loud but still it stays warm, not ear piercing snare like Starphonic brass.Love it.
VERY nice!
WOW!

Are you guys gonna do a demo on the new 14x6.5 Tama slp sonic stainless steel
Can't decide between this and Starphonic aluminium... Any suggestions? Thanks! 🙏
@memphis drum shop, do you know if this snare tarnishes over time? Does it have a coating of some kind?
How is the reso head tuned?
I do not get that nice fat sound in low tuning as here :)
90% sure their method of tuning for these videos is they don't change the reso tension between tunings, only the batter head.
Hello,
Can you tell me what heads you're using for this demo? Or is this all stock equipment that comes with this drum?
Remo Coated Ambassador
Hello Memphis Drum Shop! I have this snare, and I’m desperately seeking the medium tuning of your Starphonic. Do you have Drum Dial specs for that tuning or could you measure them with it? Thanks a lot and happy holidays ♥️
We tune our drums by ear for our demos, but you could try using a Remo Coated Ambassador batter head for a more similar sound!
It´s all about the heads you like (batter and resonant), the actual snare wires, and tunning.
Go with your ears.
@@memphisdrumshop you tune it by ear but you can still use a tune-bot or dial later to see where it’s at 🤦🏻♂️
why these lags are so big, i mean what for these metal tubes between lugs?
