Sorry about this guys. I bought mine brand new in 2013 1.4 diesel, 10 years later with 61000k on the clock, not a single problem at all, has been a fantastic car, I'd recommend it, but sadly I have sold my baby after 10 years and have upgraded to a Peugeot 2008 which Is a lovely car, this time petrol. All cars break down and have issues.
Thank for that, I also got mine almost 4years now most cars have their own problems after surely they will be problems if any break down... Services is a KEY..
Sample size of one is never really a good indication.
I've found usually the common consensus about certain cars to be correct.
Especially with my vauxhall and Renault cars.
I've had my Peugeot 208 GT..Line for 3- years now .. I really don't recognize any of these faults highlighted in this video ..at all..Mine has not missed a beat . Absolutely no issues at all. Don't really get this video.. all I can think is they picked this highlighted car up from a scrap yard.. Hardly a true reflection of these Peugeot.. cars .. Totally misleading. Guys.
This is the worst car I've ever owned. Purchased in 2013 (Australia) and there's not been one year that I've had no issues, so just gone past 10 years and it's a piece of junk on wheels. I've had cars that were twice this age and were still running perfectly. Every time I drive this piece of sh!t the engine warning light comes on and not even the Peugeot mechanics can fix it. So now, I can't even sell the b@stard. This started happening back in 2020 when the high-pressure fuel pump crapped itself, along with some other issues. It took just on 3 months for the mechanic to fix it. So I get it back with that problem fixed only to have this new problem. But even before then, just issue after issue.
I bought 4 of 1.4 diesels. All of which I've sold still running well at about 176,000 miles. OK...clutch and dpf gel replaced at about 90,000 but sturdy cars. Drop links common but cheap fix.
1.2 vti puretech 2013 150 000km and zero problems. Just simple oil change each 10 000km. Belt changed at 97 000km. Maintance is the key and this car is great daily. Even used it on deliveries for a year 5 days in a week.
I have a 208 GTI and it's had so many fricking problems (not starting, losing power, engine cutting out) costing a grand total of £3500 since March 2022 and repairs were carried out by Peugeot. I wouldn't buy another Peugeot ever again. The worst part is despite these repairs there is an impending fear the faults will come back. Since this year 2023, I've replaced 4 spark plugs with NGK branded ones as 2 of them died and 3 months ago 1 coil went and now another coil has gone I had all spark plugs and coils replaced by a garage during a service 1.5 years ago. Solenoid repair I had done in February and a new low pressure fuel pump as the engine cut out on me and Peugeot said it was only putting out 3.5 bar and not 5 bar. The fuel pump was the first of the 100s of repairs I had done 1.5 years ago by a local garage. I asked Peugeot for the old fuel pump when they replaced it, incase they are wrong, I don't want to throw out a good fuel pump. Peugeot somehow lost it.
The problem is the 208 GTI came out in 2013 and I have a 63 plate so its an early model of the car which will be plagued with issues. Compared to 2015 models.

Great video. With a few funny bits 😂. Honestly the best and most honest review i've seen in ages
Good car. Bought mine with 31000 miles in 2019. Now has 115,000 (late 2023). So far, no issues until last month or two. Ad Blue system is triggering alarm constantly. DP filter alarm (risk of clogging) permanently on. Suspension problems. Intercooler problems. All very recent issues. As cambelt is due, I'm getting shut asap. Best aspect is almost 70 mpg (1.6HDI model) -
I've been driving Peugeot 208 1.4 Active (2012) about almost 7 years, and I must say this has been a good car. Of course there's been some fixes during the years, and one of the most expensive was AC compressor.
During the winter times (in Finland) the biggest issue has been that brakes freeze when the it's blowing snow type of winter weather (the snow gets to warm braking system and freezes). And because of that you need to learn how to park without braking too much 😀
Also maybe not the best car for long drives, but good when using city drives (small turning radius).
And the front seats more comfortable than back seats. I think this car is slightly better for smaller people.
And we're second owners of this car. Not buying as brand new.
I have same car and the motor is pretty good, exept it takes alot of oil in my opinion. Now done about 225 000km in 11 years and its still going. There have been some mild to moderate problems during these years but nothing crazy expensive.
Fun video as always
I bought mine new when it came out in 2012, its a 1.6 e-hdi 92, i didnt have any of those problems you mention, 160000km, Portugal.
Only a recall on the shock absorber, and had to replace the acelaretor pedal in 2021.

I had one a few years ago. One problem was, in the winter when I had the heater on full blast, the multimedia screen would overheat and switch off, despite the unit containing a small fan (which was loud). Also the rear washer connection (for fluid) was made of plastic and gets brittle and causes leak. Fixed under warranty.
I had a 307 diesel wagon and it was great to drive, but...sometimes when I turn the wheel the wipers would turn on. Sometimes when I turn on the indicator the wipers would turn on. Sometimes the rear wipers would turn on by itself for no reason at all.
Had a family friend who had a 307 and used to tell stories of how his car was haunted and had s mind if its own, that wipers and windows (etc) would just operate randomly lol
Seems like weird electrical gremlins are standard thing for Peugeots.
Funny thing is that Alfa's have such a bad rep for reliability, yet none of the Alfa's I've owned have had electrical issues anywhere near that crazy.
I have to say though, despite the gremlins I did like that 307. It had a nice gearshift, the 2L diesel was extremely strong and very economical, and it accordant handled pretty well for a fwd wagon.
I like my 208 it’s a 66 plate blue motion 1.6 td
It does about 71mpg it’s got 111500 miles and in the 3 mths only had one issue and that’s with emissions.
Went back to the dealer and said that it needs sorting and 3 days later it was sorted.
Am happy with my 208
Sounds like a nice car Mike! Hopefully it stays reliable for many happy miles for you 😁
I've got 2012 Peugeot 208 1.6 eHDi with 59 mpg and 110500 miles and still no problems, only consumable parts changed (brakeplates & bearings).
What ive heard the petrols are absolute garbage, but the diesels are pretty good
@@jeppejensen470 I have a 2018 208 diesel.
Bought it from new and have never had any problems with it.
It gets a service once a year.
Any help needed. I have a 2018 gti when it’s accelerating it makes loud noises like a string vibration but when you ease off the gas it doesn’t make the noise
I've got a 1.4hdi 208. cat n, had 42000 it's now got 115000. it's cost me nothing in that time although I have just replaced the upstream temperature sensor as it failed and threw the management light on. but 43 quid and it's sorted. like all things you get good and bad. I've also got a 2008 1.6 hdi and that's went from 1900 mile to 77k a d not an issue but they will be coming. they've both been good cars for me
Thank you for this video, i almost bought one of these. I'm glad i do not just buy any car but check everything i can about it. I did know that the engine was not really reliable, but that is a risk with every car. I guess i'm going to look for a different car, maybe even stick with Renault as i have had 3 for years and never had any issues.
Cheers for the tips, I was tempted to go for one before watching this, but terrifying to hear about the brakes!! I the shape but won't risk it.
BTW I like how you keep your bloopers in, makes you seem more human and trustworthy somehow 😊
On my second 208, had first one for 6 years, the last year problems started, fault codes were showing, should have sold it after 4 years. Other than that a good car, second one is better, just wont keep it as long.
Like any car you buy, some will have problems, some won't cause a worry at all. If there is a common break failure issue take your car into a Peugeot dealer and tell them it must be addressed,I'm sure they'll correct it.
My 11 yr old 1.6vti tuned to about 130bhp is now north 130k only thing engine wise was a thermostat housing, and a radiator which I accidentally damaged during service
1.2 82hp 2015 VTi here, no issues. General maintenance. 60k km will be changing 4 tyres & brakes/disks on front (am not the kindest driver).
Great and pratical city car, none of those issues at all. Has a rearview camera with better quality than newer ones. It is starting to feel its age design wise but still pretty decent looking compared to fiestas or corsas from the same year that look ancient.
It’s an easy to live, fairly economical city car that can be pushed to bigger roads.
How's your oil consumption?
@@itstheterranaut my 1.2 2013 model consumes copious amounts of oil.
what about the GT model, or are all of them no good? I'm actually going to a dealer on Friday, lol
I have the 1.2 3cylinder in a Citroën c3 (same engine just a bit bigger) and its powerful enough for 60-70mph and fairly lively to overtake at 80mph but it can bog down when pulling away from a standstill....
How is the 208 up to 2020 previous generation? 1.2 petrol 110 hp. automatic gear. Thank you.
Another great little car buyers, Shame to hear of all the issues that affect this little puggie.
I have a 2016 208 in a GTI model. CAT has gone (should I de-cat it ?)already and there’s the occasional whining from the clutch release bearing , and also as it came from the West Scottish Coast it’s rusted quite a bit underneath, but seems fine apart from that lol
Thanks for making this video. My younger bro was going to buy one used and after this I don’t think he will
great video thank you
Hi i.was tempt to buy a Peugeot 208 vti but I heard they have engine problems
My wife has had a crash due to total break failure driving 208 is in now hospital be aware
What year is this car ?
I have 1.6 and its fine i have done about 55k on it already nothing major apart from mounts need to be replaced
Bought a second hand Peugeot 208, registered in 2019, in North Wales. After 2 days it was on the breakdown lorry being returned due to deceleration issues. Ie from 70 mph to 30. 6 weeks later it’s back at the dealership. Deceleration issues again. It suddenly loses power when I overtake. I’m 70 & 3 times I felt in a dangerous situation on a fast road.
Happened to my Astra too.
2023 Astra 1.2 130 gas, has problems since the 3rd day. I just get nonstop beeping notification. My garage opened a ticket at Opel since they couldn't fix the problems, ABS, ESP, electronic parking brake doesn't disengage, check engine light, tyre pressure etc., power steering loss when you start the car up, the gage cluster stopped working and I got a speeding ticket because of that, Android Auto nor Apple CarPlay works, the pressure plate has been changed and the gear box (manual) is making cracking noises when put in reverse no matter what 6.000miles so far.
My 208, 1.2 VTI now requires a new clutch kit..geez
I was going to look at a 208 (2014) glad I've seen this.
hey,a 2017 model,,it leak some oil from some place back the weel,,a round, thing,,i dont knoww the name of it,but a subbing voice come from this place,,a man said i can drive whit it,,do any know what i mean?
and are this broken thing expensiv???
Been driving a 2016 208 for 3yrs now and never bad a single problem
I wish I was born in Scotland. Such a great accent!
Thank you 🏴 🤝🏻😁
As Sean Connery would say .... Yesshhh.
Has it got a wet timing belts
My 208 will be my last peugeot I am afraid. Owned 3 and they have been great but this last one is just a mess. Also anything that has a wet belt (belt that is lubricated by the engines oil) ..... just run away. What where they thinking!!!!
I've got issues with my 208 1.2 gt line, low pressure light on,suspected timing belt problem and its only got 46k on the clock,17 plate too
Is it the new model ?
I bought a 208 last year from 2018 with a glasroof... One year later i just discovered rust in both sides just right behind the glasroof. Disapointing
Peugot Should have 10 year rust guarantee
208 blue hdi active or Ford fiesta ?
Which you guys recommend for first car Vauxhall Astra or this Peugeot?
They're two different sizes of car. The Peugeot 208 is of a smaller category than the astra.
I've been looking at one of these, but not convinced by the 'wet belt' timing belt -- seems like they're a bit of a problem.
Mine has just gone with wet belt issue, avoid getting one mate, wet belt massive issue
@@thechipman2473 I just got a 1.0 Citroen C1 instead -- much smaller car, but chain driven and bulletproof.
Hope you get yours sorted without too much pain.
So the brakes can fail, it can leak petrol, the bonnet can randomly open meaning you are driving blind and final nail in the coffin for this particular example is that it has tacky 4D plates
Choosing another car might be a better decision. The engines with the "belt in oil" timing belts are a bomb waiting to go off.
great vid, thanks! clout comment to pay respect
We need reviews like this in Oz
my 2014 1.2 3dr, the suspension squeaks almost when going over bumps or speedbumps. the brakes also make a screach noise and sometimes when i corner it makes the same screach noise. Ive only just noticed the suspension making squeaky noises and i dont know if i should get it checked out???
It’s almost certainly nothing to worry too much about but it never hurts to have a professional cast an eye over these noises. I’d likely mention it next service and see if they can see any worn suspension parts.
Did you find out what this was? Just bought a used 208, everything good apart from a rattle from underneath I'd like to get sorted if possible
@@misterprozilla2293 it comes and goes, really weird, haven’t heard it in a while. It’s something to do with a plastic component in the suspension, it’s not broken but it just makes the noise. No issue. It can be replaced but only to remove the noise. Since the component is completely fine. It’s a common issue with a few cars including the 208
@@misterprozilla2293have you sorted the rattle?
@@karpetcabin I haven't - all the Car People I've asked don't think it's anything to worry about, possibly a worn or dried rubber bush (?) or loose exhaust mounting. The dealer had replaced a few parts trying to find it but I'll mention it to my local mechanic next time I'm there, they've been really good in the past
Did the 1 litre engine come with the 107 engine by any chance? I don't want to be doing a timing belt on a French car. Ever.
Pretty simply to be honest
No 107 has a bullet proof Toyota engine
I just drove 2023 GT model. It's the worst experience so far. It's not made for 6.4 and the start stop is just terrible.
Theres a 1.6hdi that im interested in. Anybody own one ? Are the engines any good
These are pretty reliable cars as long as you avoid the must run away options for it. All diesels are pretty reliable (mines an e-hdi 92 with 170k kms and no problems). Normal gasoline engines may have problems with the catalytic converter (expensive), the 1.6THP should be avoided at all costs and the worse one is one of the most common: the 1.2 puretech, either with or without turbo. They use a moist belt that completely destroys the engine in less than 100k kilometers! That one’s trash!
how about 1.6 Vti?
Does this Peugeot 1.0 vti 208 have standard timing belt? Or one of these wet belt systems
Wet belt.
@@itstheterranaut How on earth they decided on this design is beyond stupid. A disaster waiting to happen.
@@peter7624 I just don't get why they didn't use the Toyota/Daihatsu engine with 68hp but rather designed their own engine specifically for the 208 and C3

Hey! Don't panic... often they will be great cars and need very minimal work. You can check by calling your local Peugeot garage with the registration plate and vin number. Good luck and let us know if we can help!

Off course is not race car but for budget car it’s fine. It’s all up to driver…🤣
How long have you had it for? What year is it and did you have any issues with it please?
@@andyrotaru7031 I got one with 100k kms on the clock 4 months ago and had some issues. Well it didn't break down on the road at least but had quite a big maintenance bill, making it not the cheapest option considering the price I paid for the car itself.
1. Wet timing belt mentioned on other comments, had to get that replaced. Peugeot suggests 180k kms lifetime for these but it's just ridiculous, mine already had cracks on it and was like a ticking bomb (pun intended as it makes the engine tick like a diesel)
2. Handbrake cable completely corroded and had to be replaced. I noticed the handbrake is gone on a hill that I needed to use handbrake, fortunately I was quick to brake on time before I hit someone.
3. Brakes... well the previous owner hasn't really changed the calipers so it's just regular maintenance but I am afraid I may have the issue mentioned on this video, I just hear a weird ticking when I turn the steering while braking, this happens only after driving for a while though.
4. Catalytic converters on 208s are total crap. They're prone to failure. After driving mine for 200 kms, check engine light popped up which meant catalytic converter failure. It had to be replaced and it's not the cheapest repair really.
Well it's a 10 year old car on 100k kms so obviously there will be some maintenance required but some parts on this car are more likely to fail than its competitors. Fortunately my car doesn't have the touch screen and as it's the base trim level, less electronics to fail (The biggest issue with French cars) at least. Anyways it's an OK daily driver, relatively quick and comfy, also fine for 500-1k km trips occasionally. I've got the 1.2 82hp version, which doesn't sound that much but considering how lightweight this car is, it's more than enough.
I had a 1.6 petrol feline for 5 years. Not an ounce of trouble

Really? I thought they might even be worse, ss I know that particular 1.6 Turbo motor was also used in the mini and had a reputation for being unreliable. :(
@@pete3198 personally I'd aim for a 308 GTi 270 if any car from Peugeot but mileage is the biggest factor of unreliability in any car , minus a Mercedes I hate them with a passion
I'm currently in your situation, I was looking to get a 208 GTi, over a Fiesta ST (MK7), but, I've heard too much sketchy sh*t about this car's reliability. Also, I use to own a BMW 320i ED (Efficient Dynamics) which has a "N13" engine. It turns out that the engine in the 208 GTi is a variant of that N13 engine. This N13 engine is also known as the "Prince" Engine. The code for the 208 GTi version of the Prince engine is called, EP6CDTX.
The BMW 320I ED I had, with the shared Prince engine (N13) was just problematic. The O2 sensor (post catalytic converter) failed twice, the car was eating up oil. The valve solenoid failed twice, and the inlet hose that goes to the turbo, became brittle and straight up broke off. Bear in mind, that the car was service on schedule, and had only done 65,000 miles. I owned the car from 18,000 miles on the clock. I would never buy another car with one of these Prince engines, ever. Perhaps I was unlucky. But, I would not take the risk again. Especially as just prior to watching this video, I came across a 208 GTi owner on UA-cam, who made a 1 year anniversary review video on his car, and mentioned that the O2 sensor failed (obviously within the first year of ownership). That has fully put me off. I will probably end up buying an Fiesta ST, or, a Renault Clio Lux/RS ...or perhaps a 180BHP Abarth 595/695.
I'm sure the 208 GTi is a fun little car, but, I'm not interested due to the aforementioned reason.
Just aim for a facelifted model (mid-2015 onwards) with FSH and you should be fairly trouble-free. It's the THP 200 engine that has the issues. Look for the aptly-named THP 208.

Id avoid these cars completely. Had one less than a year, full history less than 50k on the clock and its had nothing but problems. The latest being a bad oil pump which renders it not even worth the cost of repair. Pieces of junk.
Im guessing you had the petrol engine? The timing belt is immersed in oil.
Over time, the belt cracks & little chunks of rubber break off. These chunks of rubber block up the oil pick-up strainer.
