Hi guys, I've been a railway modeller for years,(never got it right yet), mostly OO scale, but I've also done N scale, as well as TT120(German outline), and,as become older, I've found that N scale is becoming too fiddly, TT120 is a lovely scale to work with, I can recommend Gary Halls channel to anyone looking for inspiration,he has produced some superb models, anyway take care, all the best from Scotland Stephen.

Hi Chris & Greg. I like this type of video and would like to see more, with interviews with people from the industry/community. Heljan: Many (most) reviews of Heljan products haven't been too favourable, although some of their newer products have fared better than their earlier ones. I couldn't really understand their "there are no winners, only losers" reason for not entering the TT:120 marketplace. OK, maybe not producing "identical" models as other manufactures, but they still want to compete in a rapidly saturated OO market. Simon Kohler: I would love to hear a fair and unbiased assessment (from anyone) as to whether things have improved at Hornby since Simon's departure and if they have, was this just happenstance or does his replacement just have better ideas? We, who do model in TT:120, do have a lot to thank Simon for when he reintroduced the TT scale (albeit in a different, but better(?) form).

Thanks Paul, yes we’ve got a couple of industry people that we’re talking to about being interviewed. Understandably, they wanted to see what we’re up to before committing, so hopefully comments like yours will help them decide (to accept our invitations)

Hi Peachy, I love your TT120 channel. I live in a 1 bed flat & do n gauge but I'd love to try TT120 gauge. Simon at Hornby had such a brainwave with this! This is definitely the way to go, especially as a lot of people living in smaller properties these days! Both double O gauge & n gauge are not quite realistic in size but from what I understand TT120 is spot on with the scale! I would love to try TT120 scale! I'm so glad different model railway channels are covering this! We definitely need TT120 in the UK! My full support to Hornby with this! I'll definitely get myself a TT120 train set at some point & when I can afford it.👍

Hi Chris and Greg. Very much enjoyed your chat. You raised some good points and topics.
I got into TT because my OO layout which is situated in an outhouse in the garden is mainly steam era based. I always wanted a separate 1980s/1990s era layout to run diesels and electrics but never had the space. I did consider N at one point but not having very good eyesight I'd probably find it too small and fiddly. So when Hornby announced their plans to introduce TT I thought it would be a great compromise. So what did I buy?! More Gresley Pacifics! 😂 But I have got the BR blue 08 and have recently come into possession of the lovely swallow livery HST with rake of Mk3s. So I've a 6×4 baseboard set up in my spare bedroom and am beginning to design and build a continuous double track circuit. I have Hornby's Settle & Carlisle station so will try and base it on a fictional village/small town along the S&C which is one of my favourite routes. For the curved sections I plan to use Hornby's 4th radius setrack as the inner radius then make a 5th radius with Peco's flexible track. That should just about fit into the 4ft width and give the effect of some reasonably gentle curves. So plenty to keep me occupied in my retirement! My OO layout is also crying out for a good rebuild. The track is still the old steel track and needs replacing. A lot of it is 1st and 2nd radius curves too which I'd like to move away from using.
Regarding the young man with his trains on the carpet. Well he definitely seems to know his stuff regarding the mechanics and electrics of the models but I completely disagree with many of his reviews. Sometimes its like he buys models he doesn't like the look of just to trash them in a review. If you don't like a model or if its not your thing why waste your money on it? But he's entitled to express his opinions I suppose. I just feel he can be fer too negative.
From the new announcements in April I'm hoping to see a few more variants of the Mk1s. My TT passengers definitely want to see a catering vehicle so a Mk1 buffet would be well received as well as maybe an open standard and first. Also more ready to plant buildings would be great. Looking forward to the Clasd 50 and I do have a Duchess on pre order though I'm trying not to duplicate my OO collection. I think everyone wants a tank loco of some sort which I'm sure will be on the horizon. Also would be good to have a hetitage DMU.
Look forward to some of your chars with other model railway UA-camrs.
    Regards Rob 😊

    Hi Chris,
Thank you for your confession about having some problems! I too have had a few issues and used to think I must be doing something wrong because Peachy doesn’t have any issues!!!
The power bank situation is my biggest issue and I will try to rectify this when (if) they become available. Some guidance on fitting them to every type of TT120 loco would be useful.
Your explanation about decoders cutting out when any wheel signals a loss of contact explained a lot!

Well done lads, enjoyed very much listening to your reasons for starting your TT journey. I had a hornby 3 rail setup given to me by my uncle and just like the you teenage years came along. Last year I was diagnosed with cancer and while recovering from an operation was thinking I need something to occupy my time in retirement. Spent more time than normal watching TV and came across Hornby a model world and TT120. I hope to actually start the layout next month, I already have a couple of sets and other track, locos and rolling stock with more on preorder. Strangely I have the Dutches of Atholl on preorder because it reminded me of one I had. Unknown to me my brother had a load of 00 stuff from when my father passed away and there in bits was the one I had which was the Duchess of Atholl. Hi guys. I had a OO layout when I was a kid, but I have since never had the space for one. When I saw tt:120 on "hornby a model world" I thought it was brilliant. I have bought the scotsman set, Mallard, flying scotsman and HST, plus lots of rolling stock. HMDCC chips fitted to all. It's fantastic. I'm surprised Peachy, you had trouble running without the power bank. I've had no issues with mine running on the hornby track. I did have problems with Flying Scotsman, which went back to Hornby, who replaced the chip and tender bogey. It's run fine since.

I agree with you both about the scale being the right size to make dioramas that look proportional. I'm presently working on a brewery and a colliery, both of which need room to look convincing.
I have invested in the scale(perhaps more than I'd dare admit to my wife!). I presently have 250 wagons, 20 or so coaches, all the locos and 120 yards of unpaid Peco track (it helps to have a second address when it comes to keeping SWMBO in the dark).

I got my first OO set in 1982, I had the APT and a class 31 with a few wagons. It was a single loop with a few small sidings on a 6 x 4 board. Not having space and spare cash it got put away and eventually sold off. I've looked a few times at restarting but never did. In January 24 I looked and saw TT, I was a bit doubtful until I started withy the track planning software when I realised how bit it would be. I converted the layout to TT and was amazed how much I could fit into the layout, again 6 x 4. I watched your videos and modeloco which convinced me TT was for me.
I also got the Scotsman set and the Mallard, followed by the Flying Scotsman and the GBRf 08 shunter. I'm loving it, looking forward to the LMS coming out as ive always been a fan of their locos.

Hi Guys, great show and content. We have plans for a large TT120 layout, which we will make available for other interested parties to use, our current thinking is it will be approx 5.8m x6.5m with the ability to be run as multiple Era's. I personally model German Era 1, ie Prussian railways from around the turn of the 1900's to the late 1910's, but I also have a keen eye on the British TT120, since it's redevelopment into proper scale TT120 instead of that old over sized post war scale.
I have a few people say why would you do it instead of HO, OO or smaller, I simply say I think I will be able to achieve more in the same space, most of my rolling stock is Tillig or Hadl, the quality is there in great detail, similarly the same with Hornby and Peco's new TT120 ranges.
Hopefully I will get the building the layout will be built in fully renovated this year, ready to start building the layout soon after. I'm keen for any input people would like to give, whether ideas on the layout or construction. I plan to make it a free to use to other modellers of the scale.
I have three grandsons who are slowing finding their way with the hobby, I see a great future ahead for the scale.

Should allow people to run full length trains in decent scenic lengths, I am hoping to run it as Continental layout and as a British layout, hopefully by changing buildings etc to match each style ie, It would run one weekend as my German layout and the following session as a British layout, the only problem I foresee is the power control system which I can see maybe causing a few issues, Might have to operate the it with swap over system for each version.

Hi Greg, I hope I can encourage people into the scale, I am relatively new to TT120, I have had plans for O, HO, HOm, N in the past, but no layout ever materialised for many reasons in the past, But I caught the TT120 Bug when I went to a model exhibition in Magdeburg in Germany, and the amount of TT120 layouts was incredible, from micro layouts to huge exhibition size layouts. I bought a suitcase full of models of the Tillig stand, with one of the team saying I was the " mad Englishman ", which I quite enjoyed being called Lol. I was already looking at the Hornby TT range when it was first announced, joining the club etc, but seeing what you can achieve with the scale as hooked me big time.@@mactrains

The reaction of OO modellers to TT:120 is interesting. If any other companies selling OO had announced TT:120 I don’t think there would have been much reaction. Hornby are OO. They supply everything, track, locos, stock and controllers. So if they introduce another scale might they be about to abandon OO? Of course not, but there is a lot of insecurity in many people’s lives.

    • @mactrains
      @mactrains 4 місяці тому

I think this theory does play out - when Peco and Heljan announced their initial foray into this scale very little negativity was mooted. On the other hand I agree that 00 and Hornby are virtually synonymous - so can understand folk wanting reassurance that this is not a total about-face Hornby but merely an "addition to", instead of a "replacement of", 00. Thanks for watching!

HM7000 is a unique product and has no competition at the price. If only Hornby would support developers by releasing a dev kit so that people could write their own sound and loco profiles. That would make it attractive way beyond UK models.
That said, classic DCC command stations are incredibly cheap these days if you're willing to do a little assembly yourself. I put one together in under an hour last week with full smartphone wifi control. It cost under £30.

    • @mactrains

That would be very interesting - however I think that the tech overheads must be quite high. Not sure that they have the resources for such an endeavour. Though I'd love to see some basic slave control units with physical tactile knobs and buttons.

Hello Peachy & Mac, new subscriber here.
I keep feeling tempted by TT:120 after many years struggling with UK N and then trying to do a OO Layout (as I am currently) and there are things that I am still unsure about. If I may ask?
As a Inglenook was mentioned, what is coupling/uncoupling like - how easy is it say compared to a Tension Lock?
I have 3 locos, 2 coaches and 2 wagons suitable for my new OO and in my current space would still only have the room for an end to end layout which is a shame as looking at the dimensions needed for the train set I am only 17cm off the width needed whilst being 30cm over the length, unless I could make a removable section I guess,
anyway I am hovering around the Duchess class but as a GWR fan first and foremost I have been eager to see the Pannier that they announced way back when haha! I did ask at the Gaydon show and was told by the chap there (can't think of his name) to keep my eye out early this year so not sure if the J50 is instead of or what but I would be willing to dip my toe in if the coupling situation is not too bad and the Duchess has the all important front coupler!
    Thank You
    Christopher

Hi Christopher. Shunting is absolutely possible. And even enjoyable in TT. Peachy has a video on couplings, but for myself I confess I am perfectly content with the Hornby TT coupling. I’ve even done a very brief video on MacTrains showing a little Inglenook style challenge. Some minor hiccups, but then I have that in OO too! Don’t let it hold you back at all.

Hornby's TT120 models are undoubtedly nicely made.
The key problem for me is the price as Kato N is the main competition and offers some of the best value in all of model railways. 2-6-0 Japanese steam tender loco with lighting? £60. Rake of four coaches with switchable tail lights? £33. Swiss Glacier Express train with electric loco, five panorama coaches plus buffet car? £100. Shunter plus two wagons ? £15.
Plus Kato's unitrack system is much better for a "tabletop" layout as it is designed for temporary layouts in Japanese apartments which are even smaller than UK ones. It has built in track bed and snaps together firmly so is very tolerant of less than perfect surfaces. All the rolling stock above goes round a 15cm radius curves. A basic oval of that is £15.
