“I’m responsible because I could have prevented it.” & “Prison doesn’t rehabilitate. It’s up to the individual to rehabilitate.” This is key. The people who stay stuck in the not my fault mentality never grow and move forward in life. Eugene you would be a great mentor to young men who have lost their way. I wish you the best in life ❤

I had a friend whose husband had road rage, he passed a guy driving to slow for his liking, so he passed him, flipped him off, when that car got to the stop light, that driver pulled up next to him and blew his brains out, he was 30 years old, the guy that shot him was in his 50’s and now serving a life sentence………true story! Wow..this was deep! Eugene perfectly recognized, acknowledged, and defined the distorted sense of realities that many young Black men are exposed to at an early age.
Eugene also recognized and put into perspective the lack of respect and self-centeredness that is so prevalent in a "free society."

This reminds me of a question my psychology teacher ask us one day nurture or nature. I believe it can be both sometimes when someone commits adultery crime. And then you have people who have been loved and nurtured over life, and still commit a crime. And then you have someone who has no one just nature and they never do anything wrong. So you see this can be a very tricky field to work in.

@@ybloyal8154 thank you for the book suggestions. I happened to be reading the comments here and noticed your reply to ask you anything. Thank you. Other than the books, what is the most important thing I can tell my son? At first he wasn’t letting prison work him but instead he was doing a pretty good job of keeping it out of his head. He’s been in almost 10 and has more but probably home in the next 8. He’s letting the system take him down now. He’s 31. He started letting the place work him now and is pulling away from us now. He grew up with both of us, had a good childhood, made some bad decisions and, boom, he’s in. He hung up on me on Mother’s Day, getting real pissy lately, and only calls now when he wants extra $. I know what’s up, I ain’t stupid. But I wrote a letter to him, hoping with the best advise I could give, including…”write a book son”,. If there was one thing I could say to help the man inside him, who I know, what would it be? I just want him to be at peace inside and help him not let that place take him down. I’m like your mom to him. This is some tough “you know what” for us both but his dad and I are the ones who can have a clearish mind. I’d like his to be too. Thanks if you can answer. 💞 I’m going to see how I can get those books sent to him. That place he’s in makes everything hard.

I was 6 years old and hid my 15 month old sister under the bed after untying her. We both were tied to a cinder block to be thrown in the river to die. While my brother and mother fought him, I got myself and my sister free. He hit me with a cast iron skillet and I bit him on his hip. I lost a few teeth doing it, but I didn't care. “I was a thousand different people.” ~Eugene. How many of us are a thousand different people all wrapped up into one body. Struggles of the hood are real. The bad experiences often times shatter a person into a thousand little pieces. The good experiences often times build us up with thousands of pieces of a solid foundation. That father didn’t have to die. It’s good Eugene realizes that he was just as responsible as the others. I hope everyone involved from the family who lost a father to Eugene can find solace and hope with what they have in life.

These interviews are just about the best thing on the Internet. A murder can never be taken back and that wife and daughter lost someone they loved. Eugene, your story about a broken home and not having a father figure in your life IS the problem with a majority of our male criminal offenders. This lack of a father and a positive male role model in a youth's developmental years is the greatest threat to the future of our country.

What a great interview! This man truly rehabilitated himself! The lessons, the perceptions, he learned in prison, the way he changed his entire way of thinking is exactly the reason he was paroled (I’m assuming) this man learned the meaning of his life! I’d love to hear his music, to read his book! He would make an awesome motivational speaker, a speaker to the youth, a guest speaker in prisons (on how to rehabilitate your own self) I totally understood what he was saying when he was talking about his partner. This was one of the best interviews I’ve seen. (They’re all great) but this man was telling truths and he was respectful doing it. I felt the remorse that he has for the father, (RIP) I’d love to hear from him again! I’m sure he’s got so many stories, just the way he tells them are fascinating! He wasn’t boasting about his experiences, like so many do! hope he finds a partner and that he can live the life that he wanted for himself!
