I love doing it with my 4 month old. We notice so many more cognitive developments with him by also doing EC. It’s hard to imagine not doing it at this point

Growing up in China in the 1990’s, all babies wore split pants and were “potty trained” incredibly early. I was fully by 9 months, it is definitely cultural. It’s strange to be in the USA and see children wearing diapers until they’re 2-3. Kids are capable of a lot more than what Western society thinks - they just lack the opportunity.

Yes totally! My parents are from Sri Lanka and potty training as an infant is totally normal there too… I find changing a 2-3 year olds diaper super strange as well…

I'm Zambian, and I remember my mom doing this with my sibling and many moms back when i was a kid doing this with babies. They'd start around 3 months or so. Sadly, people are losing this is something we're losing in urban areas

I've always had the intention to do elimination communication after baby's first month but on my second week, I was trying it, just for fun. Not that I was not overwhelmed by being a new mama but..haha. I was curious. Now baby is 3 months old and she will TELL ME when she needs to poo, pretty much screams her head off and going "NGH" with a crunching motion.
Now she will go even when we are at someone else's sink. Oh..I do it over the sink because I feel it is easier. Pee, poo, wash. Instead of having to hold the potty and maybe pee gets out and then washing the potty.
ALSO, I feel one big positive is that we have one more thing we KNOW about our child. There is one more option for her fussing. It can be a negative too in the beginning as there is like ONE more thing to consider. Is it pee, poo, eat, sleep, burp? I think it gets better and am not giving up just yet, though somedays can get tiring when you think you've done it all...just that...you didn't hold long enough for poo..there's still more to come! 😄 or is it just me?

is fart/gas on your list too? I've heard that's #6 on the list! Also heard that it helps to "walk" them or mimic going for a walk by moving their legs in a bike type fashion. A walk around the block gets the fart out! haha it's true for adults, and seems to work really well for gassy babies too. Apparently it's a well known technique. Thanks for sharing you experience with EC! (commenter) and thanks for sharing your experience with EC! (youtuber!) Enjoyed this video!

I think this is one of those things that we’ll realize just make more sense years from now. Like people will look back and wonder why we let kids poop in diapers for years only to try to reteach them later.

  • @WithoutVlogs

This sounds so logical to me, since it is the same you potty train a puppy. With our pup I used to go outside right after she played, when she woke up and about 20 minutes after eating. When she was really small this was about every other hour. After about two hard weeks I started noticing signals when she needed to go outside. She would look out of a certain window in our house to let us know or she would shortly sniff the ground. When she grew older, the times between potty times grew longer naturally. I think it would be the same with babies. They can get the concept quite fast and after that it is just waiting for them to be able to control their bladder for longer intervals.

EC is the best thing ever. last time i started at around 10 days old with my baby, this time ill start straight away from birth. last time by 5 months my baby could communicate to me by blowing a raspberry that she needed a kaka. by one year she could verbally tell me 'kaka' and she was using the toilet with a seat reducer. Couldnt have cloth diapered without this knowledge. Great you're speaking out and about it

Just having a potty chair or seat teaches them to sit and go, if their feet are elevated ( like when adults use a squatty potty) the angle is even better. When you use the toilet it is good to have your baby sit bare butt on their potty chair at the same time. If you have ipad/smart phone or tablet play the “kids youtube” potty videos. They are very good and teach better than most parents could.

when my tiny baby would poo in her tiny pot it was literally the most satisfying thing in the world. and she always looked so calm and serene after. no cleaning of kaka off her tiny body. no 'poo explosions' i honestly have no idea how people deal with babies and their poo the mainstream way. i swear it caused so much less stress between me and my partner because we never had to worry about changing disgusting diapers. he was also super into the EC which really helped

Wished I potty trained my kids earlier. My girl is turning 5 at the end of the week and still not 100% potty trained. Her strong willed nature of being told or reminded to go made her hold it until she busting. My 2yr old is showing signs hes ready to be potty trained. Wish me luck. I also hv a 10wk old. I notice his cues but still let him go in his nappy. Am just so exhausted. But this is something I would like to try.

I was lucky to come across a video from Andrea two weeks in where she spoke about trying to notice their signals, and how instructively babies don't want to soil themselves, and all of a sudden the fussyness during breastfeeding made sense as she needed to do a wee. As we're in lockdown anyways I was like okay let's give this a go why not. Bought the top hat potty. Haven't looked back. 🙌🏼

We did EC just for poop with our 1st at 18 months because I was tired of wrestling a snake to change her poop diapers. I wish I’d done it sooner! She never had any issues with poop when we potty trained, unlike many other kids in my mom groups, because to her poop belonged in the toilet and that was it.
We’re trying it again now with our 6 month old and have caught pee twice and poop once.
We’re not crunchy at all, but I love EC!

We did this because we are using cloth diapers and once they start solids its an awesome way to NEVER have to wash out the poop on a diaper! :) We started around 4.5 months and our baby is now 12 months and 95% poop trained and about 40-50% pee trained. Its quite amazing actually!

    • @RowesRising

I think that’s the diaper companies way of creating “studies” convincing parents to buy their products until kids are 5.🤷🏻‍♀️ “here’s an idea! Let’s convince parents their kids need to poop their pants then sell them diapers until the child that poops pants realizes the rest of the big kid world poops on the potty!” Sounds real clever. Marketing is genius.
My kids must be the exception because after eliminating in the potty since near birth, they totally told me when they had to eliminate through their baby communication. And I facilitated because they didn’t have dexterity to take off their cloth diapers or pants themselves. By mobility at 12 months they could journey to their tiny potty on the floor and “tell me” in so many ways they needed to eliminate.
Heck yeah I’m “trained” to recognize my baby’s needs to eliminate and facilitate teaching them to eliminate in appropriate places besides their pants.
In many tribal communities, mothers use elimination communication instinctively, from birth.

I was a mother 28 years ago and I just had a baby and I’m 43 and I’m still lost. It’s crazy how much everything has changed.

I also find that once my baby was like 7 months old or so... she could hold onto my legs and I could wipe like I would with a toddler :)
Otherwise when she was REALLY little I would move her to her changing pad and wipe her there-just keeping the mess away from my body if I was worried about anything getting on my clothes :)

How do you get started with EC? My baby is almost a year old. I actually did cloth diapering for first 6-7 months, then mostly stopped because I find getting the fit just right too difficult now (plus my baby went from loving diaper changes to hating them). Like seriously, I have to change him on the floor and he fights the entire time. Did you get started with the undies things? I only know when my baby is about to poop (usually, also a bit of a pattern to poop). I have no idea what any of "pee cues" would be. From what I have read, it reccommended putting baby on potty in morning when waking up, changing diaper in bathroom (so they can see poop goes in the potty).
I just don't see any "pee cues" so I have no idea how EC would work for pee. But I can see how it can work for poo.

I startet EC right when we came home from the hospital with our LO. She was mainly pooping and peeing while breastfeeding which made it easy. Normal pee i didn’t catch as often because there were “no” signs. Unfortunately she went into surgery to get an urostomy which makes it a mess when she doesn’t wear a diaper so we stopped with EC. Hopefully we can start again when she gets her reversal surgery.
Also I don’t like the term potty training, because diaper free/EC is more about the communication and granting babys not to pee/poo themselves :)
