Why Indian Cinema has not harnessed the soft power like Hollywood or British Cinema| Identity Crisis

  • Indian cinema, be in bollywood, kollywood, tollywood, mollywood, sandalwood or any other regional industries make around 2000 movies per year, but the soft power that our cinema has harnessed so far is limited to songs and dance and a Bollywood dance form. Hindi Cinema traditionally has been ahead of the game and the likes of Raj Kapoor, Amithab Bachan, Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan have fan following in other countries. Even though South cinema has found its fanbase among pan India audience the cinema has not reached beyond that. This video explores the good and bad about our quest to soft powr.

Hello admin, you must understand one point. The regional cinema (south) hasn't even completed 90 years. It takes time for us to take our industry to universal level, as we started expanding our market from this decade only. I understand you want our south movies to get a worldwide recognition, but it takes time, and that is not too far... prabhas 21 and adhipurush are the movies which are releasing in foriegn languages too. The reason why our industries took so much time to get a worldwide appeal like Bollywood movies did, is we are still building our budgets. So it takes time. And it doesn't take too much time, within this decade, our south movies will have worldwide recognition. I bet you on this👍😜

Hello admin correct me if I'm wrong..but I would be very skeptical about these rankings due to certain drawbacks in their models and a flawed mechanism of calculation. Except for maybe South Korea most other Asian countries don't even feature. In 2015 UK(beating the US) was ranked number one which acted as an eye opener for many non critics as well. When the model was analysed it was found that over 7000 people were interviewed out of which 3500 were from Europe (which amounts to about 9.5% of the global population) while a paltry 2500 were from Asia. The fact that India has give one of the biggest brands for world peace and non violence in Gandhi and Budha along with Yoga(c'mon there is a separate pornogrphic fetish called Yoga Pants in the west) has got to force us to be a lil cynical of these rankings. While harnessing Global Soft power has to be the future for enveloping positive public perception; I think these rankings shouldn't be taken much seriously :)

Just to add on, while living in Japan, I realised that Aamir Khan was quite the sensation there as well and his films were very well received. In fact, Baahubali 2 was showcased in some local theaters and I think it did pretty well there. Several of my Indonesian friends, Pacific Islander friends associate their childhoods with movies like DDLJ, Kuch kuch hota hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (movies that I myself never grew up with, since I am a Tamilian). Balika Vadhu is very famous in Vietnam too. But I think that their fascination with these movies (apart from maybe the Aamir Khan ones) had more to do with the dance, colour and over-the-topness. That's what most people end up associating with India and Indian movies in general. So to expose the average international audience to movies that don't have these elements may not appeal to them and their image of India. Perhaps that is why many good art house movies don't become that popular.
However, I think OTT platforms can bridge this gap. Like you said, we need to put more money into these new mediums so that the international audience can have a broader picture of what Indian cinema is.
Thank you for your clear analysis and easy to understand narration. We need more analyst youtubers like yourself who can give the average audience a better perspective into the Indian film industry!

Regional mostly in terms of audience....not because of language. Tamil movies like Roja and Bombay or Telugu films like Saaho or Bahubali aren't called "regional". At the same time, many of Bollywood's biggest films dont even get enough screens in South India so they're just as 'regional' as south Indian cinema. It takes more than just language to achieve popularity across India's entire landmass. Only few films have managed to achieve that.

I absolutely agreed to your presented point. What I'm seeing in indian cinema apart from being followerb is lack of collaborative between "woods" as you mentioned except fees like Bahubali, Enthiran,Aalavandhan, Hey Raam and few in the list. The industry being partially segregated by woods rather than one indian cinema. Back in 70,80,90there was a collaborative works in terms of sharing technical knowledge, working together, producing other regional works movies, however these days it's getting lack.
Somehow, I'm happy seeing Anuragh, Nivin Paul, Mohanlal, Rajkiran, Mamooty, Tapsee, A.R Rahman in various languages..
I would suggest that more brains need to work collaboratively to tap international market. As you said we can use our own directors to project india's cultural if we have the right team.

But he brought bollywood to be one of the main movie industries in the world. Newer contents have provided major bases Of great stories as well. South indian movies have fantastic story telling. The one thing thats missing is indian films should really be wiser with their pick when it comes to international awards. Thats where u get the recognition of the bright filmmakers u need.

There is no doubt that South Movies (except those extreme mass masala action movies)are far far faaaaaar better than so called bollywood but people around the world believes that movies made in hindi are the official face of indian cinema because of this misconception they even portray about Indian culture in hollywood or any other cinemas based on a north indian background. This is because regional movies which does have a good content remains underrated and under appreciated first of all we do really need to appreciate and promote best movies irrespective of their language, cast, budget, etc there by creating a solid identity for Indian Cinema. Nationwide these movies need to be recognized Then we can talk about global recognition.

Its sad that foreigners.... U know what leave aside foreigners even Indians don't appreciate actors like Hrithik, Fahad, vijay sethupathi,Prithviraj, and even adivi sesh for their talent
India should be known for their talents and performance too...
People should be allowed to embrace their acting skill just like sharlto Copley got for district 9 which was a big hit in financial sector and got a huge fan following for CGI when it is released and Korean films like oldman, the cop the gangster and the devil which got huge fan following for the gangster (even I liked his charisma) and parasite which no Indian film even Bollywood get any international recognition.... I guess Indian first have to realise their is other films other than Bollywood and recognise the talent within just like the look at foreign films and promote that

Definitely there is a good non Indian base outside India which likes dance songs but past few years we have just produced cheap copying of Hollywood moves, starting with stupid dance numbers which is nothing but booty shaking by the female lead....
Where are the Indian dance forms? Why can't they produce choreography on such forms

Sir #Hitf5! Anushka Sharma never had pressure from the beginning of her career despite being an outsider. But why only Anushka Sharma could do 7 films in first 5 years of her career? How can her career take off without special appearance,no item songs and no South films? Look at Priyanka chopra and Neha Dhupia. They acted in more than 20 films, gave special appearance, item songs and acted in South films for their career to take off. Isn't Anushka Sharma an outsider? Isn't Priyanka chopra an outsider? Why was there a separate rule and law for Anushka Sharma? 🤨🤔

You make some good points, but also I think another reason why there isn’t soft power of India in other countries is because it’s too super niche and doesn’t have widespread appeal, Japan for example has anime which has way more widespread appeal than Indian movies when I was a kid growing up in America I watched a lot more anime than indian movies, Korea has kpop which is heavily influenced by other music genres and they even have their own film industry, China has their martial arts movies, yes India has their own martial arts but visually the Chinese martial arts movies look better, and it doesn’t help that Bollywood physics hurts the image of Bollywood to westerners and they keep making flop movies with no logic, so I don’t think India will ever develop this soft power like japan China South Korea or even Uk has in its shows/movies unless they are appealing to hardcore movie fans who watch anything regardless of language or fans of musicals in general

Srk has also done many inspiring & meaningfull films
Swades. My name is Khan. Chak de Hey Ram. Dil de
Don't think he only done romantic films.
Even in romantic films. Veer Zaara & Devdas were one of Best romantic films in bollywood.
Don 1 & 2 are best action packed film I ever seen in india.
    SRK also done expeirmented films
Ra one (Sci fi) ashoka (Historical) paheli(Traditional film)
Zero (SRK played as Dwarf) Fan (Experimented his face)
But these films failed because Of lack of direction & screenplay )
Hollywood made Godfather in1972. Shinders list in 1993
12 angry men in 1957. Metropolis (Sci fi film) in 1927
Raging bull in 1980. Whereas at that time bollywood were producing shit masala films and also giving copied film like Sholay which became huge hit.
It think after 2000 bollywood started giving great films like
Swades. Lagaan. Gangs of wasseypur blackfriday. Gulaaal
No smoking. Udaan. Omkara. Company maqbool sathya
And people say old bollywood were best in 80s & 90s which was nonsense .
Bollywood starting giving great films after 2000 only.
And recently they gave 2 masterpiece films Tumbadd & Andhadun
So bollywood has great talent just the audience are Idiots.
Like people praised vary dhawan for shit judwwa super hit
And they told October film is nonsense what can we expect
If audience change then automatically actors & films will also change.
