Rafting Pins and Clips

- I'm new to the pins and clips game, and I found it overwhelming trying to get the new setup bought and installed. Hopefully this helps getting people into the different style of oar locks.
everything can be bought from clavey, they are a great company and I would recommend supporting them www.clavey.com
I had a set of those years ago on the first frame I ever bought. I promptly switched them out for NRS oar locks and didnt realize I had something worth keeping. Helpful video thanks for the video.
That’s the hard part sometimes about different equipment when you buy used gear. I wouldn’t be to upset, open oar locks with oar rights are still #1 in my opinion.
I like the NRS stirrups. I have heard lots of story’s of the white stirrups breaking. Also they are also way easier to trim witch is important for running class IV-V.
What is the reasoning behind trimming?
If you trim correctly this eliminates the possibility for the clip to slide out of the stirrup mid rapid.
I also like the NRS stirrups for a couple reasons. First, I have never had one fail, where I have had two failures with the Clavey. Second, because they tend to be tighter and more difficult to slide in and out, they can help you stay in your boat in difficult water when you pop an oar.
Awesome for sharing your opinion! Really appreciate the different perspectives.
Location of the screw and trimming the hose clamp can be important to reduce the chance of getting cut.
Where do you like to position the adjuster screw?
@@PrivateWhitewater for the one above the clip (on the rounded end) I place it directly behind the curve. I figure that acts as a possible blocker to me sliding across it. I've been placing the other one right below the opening with the same thought, but I've wondered if it might keep me from sliding the clip back on the pin. However, I haven't noticed that happening yet. Not sure if this is the "right" positioning, but I've felt good about it so far. I also always trim the tails of the hose clamp so it isn't sticking out.
Far and away prefer soft NRS stirrups ! I’ve been using them for 30 plus years as both a private catboater and an Outfitter…..Canyon Cats !!
With the rope wrap, do you have trouble getting your oar through the stirrup when putting the oar onto the boat? I'm running the Carlson plastic stirrup that NRS sells, and I have to bend the plastic and shove the oar through the stirrup as there is barely enough clearance.
I have a lot of room to get the oar through. Maybe the stirrup is a different size? Do you think you could just take the sleeve off?
I did lose an oar once with pins and clips, so I run with tethers now. Maybe my stirrup was too lose, but it's an easy addition for piece of mind
Great video!
Great video, just what i needed 👍 gracias
Glad it helped!
Why “tune” the clip? Have you boated a a lot of class V? You want them to go back on the pin very easily when/if it comes off.

My thought is that a properly tuned clip won’t easily come off the pin. That way you have the stability to use the oar to keep you in the boat on lateral hits.
@@PrivateWhitewater it does not take much to pop an oar clip off a pin. A rigged boat, with a crew. Think about that weight. And a good moving current. And a rock. You can pinch that clip closed and it will pop off like nothing. You won’t even feel it. And when you’re in a crucial place, you will never slam that oar back in.
From my experience, easy on. Easy off.
It doesn’t look like NRS is making clips anymore - they’re gone from the NRS website and resellers are all out of stock, including Clavey
A lot of companies have stopped making pins and clips due to the lack of want. DRE stopped making them a few years back and they just recently sold all of their back stock.
