I am so glad this 2011 video is working December of 2016! Life saver after record a 30 minute track failed to realize my mic wasn't working and boom fixed! Ty sir!
Nearly bit the end of the Mike off with pure frustration - then I found your solution to my problems and now hey presto it all works fine, a great tutorial. Thank you for saving my sanity.
Thanks for this video! I've been using Vegas for many years and had no idea I could do this. It made narrating my last video much easier. Thanks again.
i mucked around with this for 20 minutes before finding this video. I was able to set it up in minutes after viewing, thanks, it works just like you explained it.
Incredible, hard to believe that this still applies to Vegas Pro version 17, and probably 18 because Magix gives little attention to audio. Everything in Vegas Pro is so sensitive and requires some ridiculous adjustment that you will never find on your own. Great job, I was going crazy trying to figure out low memory errors when recording audio to a timeline. Thank you very much.
Thanks for doing this Mr Zen. I'd probably die of old age by the time I figured this out by myself. You must have had a lot of patience with early software.
Not easy is right Mr Zen. . Back then there was no manual. Not even on the internet. Manufacturers relied on users finding a solution to problems & glitches. Then a patch would come out. Then a bunch of patches. And when we finally figured it all out, they would come out with another system where our old one was junk & we had to start all over. Things are better now. Thanks to folks like you Mr Zen, starting over is a lot easier. Thanks again.
Thank you for this! It's great how much you could squeeze into 7minutes. The most crucial information for me was how to set up the microphone. Sony Vegas help is very useless on this and I was speaking to my Yeti in vain. Your information shows step by step exactly what is needed. Good work!
I don't quite have the procedure as you but you inspired me to explore and, whatdoyaknow! I found a way to record directly onto a file on the computer and then easily uploaded into Vegas. Thanks for this.
I can't believe I never used this feature on Movie Studio before. I was always going to the basic Sound Recorder to record audio clips for my videos. I did one test on Movie Studio and the sound was so much better (and louder) than the basic Sound Recorder. I wanna thank you once again, sir. Your videos have really helped me come a long way with Movie Studio. Though I still have to do some experiments, because it's recording my voice WAY too loud.
I've been recording audio like this for ages but for some reason now the red record button is gone and won't allow me to record at all, I can use sound forge then import but that's a lot more stuffing around, all steps followed even have the mic selected in preferences any help greatly appreciated.
UR A LEGEND thx so much for ur help im a taltented singer and for days stuck wondering what to do.Ur steps were very easy to understand! thx and im looking forward to awesome microphone!
Do you mind me asking, what microphone do you use? Audio seems crystal clear. I have Sony Lifecam HD with mono microphone but anytime I record there is a static.. Am looking for cheap-ish clear audio microphone.
I always enjoy your tutorials. I have a problem that i hope you can help me with. I have a usb microphone with a pop filter. My problem is that i cannot hear the music audio when I plug my microphone into the usb. I can see that the audio is working but I can't hear the music in order to sing along with it. I imagine it has sometyhing to do with settings. Any ideas.
Everything you need to know should have been covered in this tutorial. The main thing to set correctly is in the Vegas Preferences. Go to Options - Preferences - Audio Device tab. Audio Device Type = Windows Classic Wave Driver (normally the setting that works). Default Audio Recording Device = M-Audio interface (via USB connection).
Thank,s I'm new in this field. We record videos in live concert. I want to record audio in my laptop through my audio mixer.because I will edit the sound and then mix with movie. How can I set mic level. Where is that. Sorry for so many questions Thank,s
Hi Thank,s for reply... How can We receive best voice level. Some time We sing loud. We receive noisy sound In Vega. How can We get best sound. Thank,s
The input meter perceives and shows the sound but there is no sound in the record just a very silent and poor quality. The recording and preferences settings are good I think as you said in the video. Can you help me?
You must press the RECORD button a 2nd time at bottom of screen for actual recording to start. Please check your Preference Settings in Vegas and Mic Settings in Computer.
If I'm putting a commentary over a game clip I have recorded using the techniques demonstrated in the video, but only for around half the length of the clip, how can I adjust the volume level on the clip so it is quiet whilst I am adding commentary, but reverts back to full volume once I'm done talking? At the moment I c an only get the volume to drop for the entirety of the clip. I'm using Sony Home Studio 12 Platinum Suite. Thanks in advance for any help!
Go to the Render As window and select MP3 from the Format list. If you are using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13, go to Make Movie/Save to Hard Drive/Advanced Options Render As / MP3
Well yes, I do know how to record audio and add it to the video perfectly but for some reason even though the audio was there, it wouldn't play any sound. Just wondering if you can help me out a little bit.
My laptop does have a Mic but it is jackless. I guess I will need to purchase the audio mic adaptor. By the way, the sound quality sounds really good! For the demo when your pressed the record icon on Sony Vegas.
The one piece of the puzzle I lack is being able to monitor the input as it is recording. In other words hear yourself in real time while the recording is taking place (in addition to hearing other existing audio tracks). I am using a Tascam US1800 interface and have it set up to playback through that interface. The track records fine and can be heard at playback fine but I cannot hear what's being recorded while it's being recorded. Any remedy? Many thanks~
+Movie Studio Zen Thanks! I have Movie Studio 12, so I guess I'm out of luck. Not sure if just that functionality would be worth the upgrade price tag since I don't need it that badly, but it's good to know about it for future upgrade assessments.
@TemporalParadox1 i just have one question i did exactly what you said on here but when i render it. my voice sucks like i cannot here it but im using a really high quality mic. i have had no troubles in the past but now its sounding like im talking through a plastic bag if you know what i mean
It would've taken much longer if it wasn't for your help. Before watching this video, I didn't think it was possible since the Audio option didn't have any settings for choosing the recording device. After watching this I face-palmed, who knew they had another option called Audio Device. Thanks man.
do you have any idea why my mic audio is SOOO quiet in the timeline? i tried to make the mic volume higher in porperties, but it didnt work. please help thx
been trying to figure out how to get the Arm for Record button to noe greyed out.....just one lil change in the settings!! but thank you!!! its the only thing that i was stuck on! :D

It took me five tutorials to finally find one that solves the issue. Thanks.
You're welcome :)
Thanks for this video! I've been using Vegas for many years and had no idea I could do this. It made narrating my last video much easier. Thanks again.

Thanks for doing this Mr Zen. I'd probably die of old age by the time I figured this out by myself.
You must have had a lot of patience with early software.
It took me about 12 months before I finally understood the basics well enough, but it was not easy back in 2008.

I LOVE YOU, YOUR A MAGIC GENIE!
How well do you think Sony Vegas will render video on a pretty good but not great laptop? Does it make a difference?
Thank you SO much!

íi have checked all. It worked in Windows 7 but in Windows 10 it doesn't. Maybe is the IDT codec the reason?
I have just tried it and it worked.... I don't understand. I hope it remains. :) Thank you.
Thank you, that was helpful!
Cheers :)
Thank you! only helpful tutorial, others just went straight to recording

@TemporalParadox1 the only thing that this has is "audio enhancement", and i dont know if it did it because i enabled the "Rec. playback"?
Can you plz tell me how to save the recording in mp3...???
Go to the Render As window and select MP3 from the Format list.
If you are using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13, go to Make Movie/Save to Hard Drive/Advanced Options
Render As / MP3

If you have a good Mic, Vegas can record at a very good quality level.

You have a nice voice brother :)

Hi, I have just seen your response to 9ColorZebra so will try that. Thanks!
Hi! Is it possible to record two different sources (mic & line in) simultaneously to different tracks?
+Movie Studio Zen Thanks! I have Movie Studio 12, so I guess I'm out of luck. Not sure if just that functionality would be worth the upgrade price tag since I don't need it that badly, but it's good to know about it for future upgrade assessments.

Much Appreciated God
