  • In November 1989, all border crossings at the Berlin Wall were opened. East German citizens could now freely travel to West Berlin and the Federal Republic of Germany. Pedestrians, motorcycles, and cars crossed the border.
Archive footage from November 10, 1989, shows an interview with a border officer near the open border. He had been on duty since the previous evening, and the influx of East German citizens was unexpected for him. There were no clear instructions on how to handle the situation. East Berliners continued to flock towards the border crossings to take advantage of their new right to travel.
