Some corrections to the caption: Adam Birnbaum is a pianist/keyboardist, not acoustic and electric guitar. Also, Ryan Keberle and Mike Fahie play trombone, but are not listed.
I first heard this in high school and it changed how I viewed jazz and composition altogether. Hearing jazz recontextualized as a tone poem about something I was already familiar with (conspiracy theories) really affected me.
I was raised in the deepest politics of fear. Now, I just have to shut down the real enemy within. This quality of musical expression helps me strive towards that.
I hear echos of Robert Graettinger (City of Glass/This Modern World) and John Adams minimalist stuff with maybe a touch of Phil Miller ("Conspiracy Theories" album), and a little of Zappa's more orchestral or Synclavier stuff. Also big band jazz (Quincy Jones big band?). Yet it doesn't actually sound like any of those things. Which is to say - very fresh and unique. Great musicians! Love the improvisation! I can't really enjoy Graettinger much any more, but I really enjoyed this! The conspiracy sound clips are very thought provoking - especially the last one. I can't imagine how much work this must have taken to produce! Lovely work! More please! Let me know when you're touring the Carolinas.
yes, right. Graettinger is absolute obvious. not only Zappa, i hear Gary Burton here and there ( A Genuine Tong Funeral album ), and Lalo Schifrin, and sometime the punch ( unisono ) of Bob James. and the production, OUTSTANDING.
Here's a question: Would you find it as powerful without the recorded voices, and the titles of the sections? If you had only heard it as abstract music, and didn't know its central theme or the intentions of each part? For me, part of its greatness comes from it being a sort of musical audio documentary, from knowing that quite a bit of it is tone-paintings, soundtracks to various real historical occurrences, suppositions, and paranoid conspiracy theories.
The first time I heard this, I would have agreed with you. The voices and titles helped me understand the entire piece. However, The voices are a distraction to additional listening. I wish I could delete the voices and listen to the concert.
Steve Lawson I agree exactly. Or even sub titles. I feel this way about other groups. There us an intetesting instrumental sound ,and a voice interrupts . Or. Maybe ,thoughts could be sung rather then spoken . I do like explicit concert, liner notes
I have many thoughts. .unfortunationally my typing skills won t permit me to express them .the piano solo really was integrated beautifully into the argue tapestry ,was that because it was written out ?when jason Palmer solos it really can transform the landscape so majestically .and praise goes to trombonist I’d rather keep these thoughts somewhat implicit now I will skip more thoughts on the music per se .i know how thoroughly disgusted the Argue family is to the politically climate but a change of subject might be welcome . A film noir plot characterization that are subtle might be refreshing and their certainly would be space for political Metaphors Of course ,now may not be the time Maybe this Coukd be held to the future and .darcy might want yo orchestrate the political brutality happening on the streets ,in the court rooms etc. it’s so tragic that this intolerance s,especially the racial ones ,still exist .we are not dealing with the subtle Mabuse mastermind . The ploys now are naked Darcy is a master orchestrator ..........
I loved this performance. Great musicians. Incredible composer. The imperialism is the enemy...
We realy love this music, project, great playing and conducting!!🤩
Brilliant

Impresionantes ejecuciones. Un comprensivo paseo por la disociación de los "reales enemigos".

Thanks for the recommendations... Do you know anymore songs with this vibe?
Glen Peterson I think city of Glass still vital
Reminds me a little of Mike Westbrook's various large bands as well, particularly some of the harmonic colors.
Fresh and inspiring!!!!
