I loaded up my new pack, and hit the woods with Scout.
Spent the night in a framed tarp shelter, and did a bunch of fun stuff.

I went camping with a buddy and his small dog. The dog was a huge liability. She's an inside dog and she were whimpering and complaining all the time even though she had everything she needed. When we were gathering wood and stuff she had to be carried up the cliffs because she is tiny and a terrible climber. Also she was walking in front of our legs when we were carrying loads of firewood so we almost stepped on her. Very difficult indeed.

Heading out Friday for an overnighter myself, so I found your video searching for overnight BUSHCRAFTING. Glad I did, because you gave me me ideas for a shelter as I will not use tent unless wife is with me. She's not coming this weekend. Also the pot holder you whittled was nice, I'll be doing something similar for my coffee pot, and gonna use Dakota pit with a small grill for cooking! Cheers buddy!

Great video! Thought you did well and arranged your camp site in a way that was a comfort to you but also a safe camp site as well. You have one beautiful dog there. If you make anther camping film and bring your dog, you might want to show you watering and feeding him. The reason is so many out there will holler , you ate and drank but ole Joe he didn't get nothing! Again thanks for the great video. May GOD bless you each time you go out into the woods and bring you home safe and well every time!

Hey Joe! I must admit I am jealous of the weather where you are and that you are able to go out so often. Not to mention the fact you have so many natural resources available. I live in the foothills of Fort Collins, Colorado. The Colorado Rockies have definitely been named the Rockies for a reason! We have LOTS of granite and mostly pine. There are some beautiful spots of Aspen, but that's about it for your choices of wood. I've entertained the idea of doing a UA-cam channel with bushcrafting in the Rockies, I just feel limited. But when spring comes around and I am able to get to the neck of the woods I enjoy, I'll give it a shot. I've searched and searched for Colorado bushcrafting videos and there really aren't any. I plan to try a couple of the ideas I have gotten from you, the ground chair(if it will go thru the granite) the long fire with fire shield, and one other idea I got from a Finnish guy. It was a fabulous way to make a pot hanger over the fire that you can swivel around

Joe, I was pleased to watch your video. You seem to be very educated in the subject. Also, your best friend is very obedient and well trained. I live in the Northeast (central PA) and there's only so much nature I can expose myself to, but still enjoy getting out and learning new ways to explore/camp. Staying on topic, I watch a lot of "youtube" videos of others experiences, however, I have to say, yours is one than I'll remember. You seem like a stand-up gent. Great video. To future communication. Cheers. -Matt

Just a heads up. The triangular flap of the tarp you have tied back into your shelter could lead rainwater along its edges to drip right onto you while you sleep. I think the same could happen with condensation. You could roll it up around the top of your frame if you're having a fire close and you want it to get out of the way. Or stretch it the other way around from underneath the top, then tie it back on the outside.

First every time you used the back of your axe as a hammer I was nervous for you, especially as it looked well maintained and sharp. Second was when you where stabbing with the bushcraft knife into your kindling. I wish I had a beautiful dog like that to take on my solo's though...... and I loved when you were reading, that's one of may most favourite things in the world... Great video, just take care....

Nice video! Just a couple of thoughts. Your windshield looks too open to effective against wind or rain. If you made it lower you would get a lot more roof out of it and if you made it narrower it would also help preserve heat inside of the windshield. The smaller the better. In that way you could even manage without a fire and having to wake up all the time in order to keep it alive. The gear could be stored under another cover to keep it from getting wet. Oh, and I would also recommend using line made of hemp when tying tripods or whatever together. It´s cheap, makes a strong bond when tying wood and you can leave it in the woods after using it.

Awesome video man. Well filmed and inspiring. I do have a question for you (or others reading this), how do you pick a good spot to camp out at? Do you shoot videos on private land or they in state parks, public land, etc? It seems like public places don't allow fires, going off trail, making shelters, or even being out past sun down... Just curious if anyone has any feedback on the topic.
    Thanks! Awesome channel btw.

      (This reply is a book)
Good Day, it depends alot on your laws, your police, and your public. I am on canada, i have no idea where he is from, but i have been caught camping on private property that i hiked into, set up a tent and fly, good hobo stove out of a burnt down washing machine that i was having a fire in, when a boat came across the lake in a rain storm to inform me that it was private property, and that they were surprised that i found that spot from the highway and told me to be careful. So i got off easy, could of been a trespassing charge.
In canada You are allowed to camp on crown land (provincial land) anywhere in Canada for up to 30 days(...i think) before you have to relocate 15 meters (~50 ft) and fire laws are different in every municipality EVERYWHERE so be aware of them, but above all be respectful and alert. If you have a roaring fire and someone can be aware of you before them they will wonder...if you acknowledge them in a pleasant fashion like??? "Hello, lovely day for a walk!" If they ask about your fire just say you're about to cook supper and ask if they are hungry with a chuckle Most people aren't too worried as long as the smoke isn't billowing, and you seem competent and friendly, don't act like you're hiding from the law or else they will probably inform them. That little tip also applies if your are actually hiding from the law in the woods.
What i look for in my camp site. Is a well designed micro climate; if it rains where will the water shed?

you should get a rucksack harness for the dog he could carry his own food plus a few extra supplies if needed.

Great video! But I think Scout should have gotten some of your water and a little Moore food since he's your alarm system! Great job with your camp. Thanks.
