Excellent Arisaka there. My uncle brought back a Type 99 from Peleliu as well. What a coincidence! Although the mum's been smoothed off, the bluing's good and the chrome-lined barrel is near mint. The one I've got is a Series 1 Nagoya made rifle. The three characters denote "Kyuu Kyuu Shiki" or "99 Type" literally, the last character meaning "type". Cheers, 5/5.
@Janet Long Go to this web site or send me a photo of the Japanese letters on the rifle. This will tell you where your rifle was manufactured and then the numbers will tell you when. There were many with only four numbers.

you see that safter is a palm safty so use you palm to rotat it right for saftey and left for fire

i have a type 99 with serial number 1597...any idea of the year made and value? bore 100 %
Are you sur it only has four numbers?
The third character simply mean type. on my type 38 it actually says 83 type
