This Is What Extinction Sounds Like

- Bernie Krause has been recording wildlife sounds, or "soundscapes," for over forty years. He's amassed the largest archive in the world, and in doing so, can chart how wildlife sounds have changed over the course of climate change. Listen for yourself: the rising silence speaks volumes.

Great Big Story is a video network dedicated to the untold, overlooked & flat-out amazing. Humans are capable of incredible things & we're here to tell their stories. When a rocket lands in your backyard, you get in. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
This is like something you'd see in CNN or a high budget documentary. Y'all deserve more.
Totally agree! This is high quality stuff. This is pbs quality stuff here. I love Nature and NOVA btw😁
Great Big Story what kind of brand mic did you use?
I have to agree! Wow just incredible! : )
Lol no BBC maybe but CNN is nothing but overhyped misrepresented nonsense and now political propaganda. Leftists try to pretend like CNN is good now but it's not, they forget how they also use to hate CNN for going after Obama for stupid nitpicky little things. Joke of a tabloid, just like all american "news".
lmao according to Wikipedia "Great Big Story is a media company, based in New York with offices in London. Launched in October 2015 by CNN" hahahahaha
You can see that he is legit sad about it
I'm rewatching this video again after 7 years and I can guarantee, through observation and living, that things sound different where I grew up. Even the air smells different. Winters are shorter and summers are longer, snow is less and fires are spreading. Merely 7 years and already such drastic changes. I was 16 when I first watched this video and now 23. The earth is precious, and it is slipping
Very interesting. But am i the only person who gets distracted (irritated) by the constant synth pad obscuring mr. Krause's beautiful recordings?
we people have to realise the importance of earth's nature and climatic processes. We simply cannot use and destroy the environment not only we live in, but all these beautifull forms of life that may never be seen again. We need more people like bernie in this video and we need to focus our thoughts on a future not for us, but for the planet. I know, I'm just sitting here and talking about change while it isn't that easy. But it could be when we all help together.
The crazy part is that even in 2004 it was nothing like how it should be. That's after 100 years of climate change, and centuries of habitat destruction and extinctions.
if you understand what he is saying you would not add any synth sounds to this video.
WHAT HAVE YOU JUST SAID??
I agree his recordings are enough to set the mood
Agreed!
this is sad. To witness the world die right before your eyes. I saw a video here, about a library of sound. They played a bird chirping. sounded like what you'd hear in the morning. Nothing special. The sound being played was from a male bird looking for a mate. he was the last of his kind.
Handel Nesperos ua-cam.com/video/nDRY0CmcYNU/v-deo.html
miguel antonio fonacier probably not the same one though since it's "nothing special", sounds like the last Kauai on earth asking if anyone is there not knowing it's the last
The Kaua'i ōō
Omg no don’t remind me of that bird it’s call made me sad
I know what bird you're speaking of.
Very beautifully presented, thanks. On second listening however i would have preferred hearing the before/after comparisons without the keyboard music. I feel it destroyed some the significant impact of the changes over time which you documented so effectively. Thanks though - brilliant stuff to be passionate about sound in nature.
this was bittersweet, thank you for great content like this
No worries of a silent spring here - the constant droning of industrial lawnmowers and leaf blowers makes sure of that.
this is alarming. heartbreaking. thanks for telling these diverse, important stories.
I want to be like him... and help to save the species being pushed to extinction. Our earth is an ever changing environment, and it’s up to us to save our “neighbors”
Your content and it's quality is excellent..don't know why you guys don't have a huge following.. 😟😟
+HODOR HODOR it's simple: they provide real quality. but in all fairness 200k+ isn't nothing.
Pushaan Sood I think it's because the vids are short and people forget to subscribe
Hey, come back and look at the subs now.
@@CookieeMonstarr666 Fuck...this is so funny. But so happy for their growth!
This video would be so much more effective without all the darn music in the background.
Really beautiful work; love it.
Love this channel, been sharing it's videos with my friends. More people should too.. Help their road to success!!
Very nice video! You guys are very underrated. However, keep up the good work.
Best channel I have seen in years, thank you for amazing content
Fantastic short film. Really great profile of nature recording legend Bernie Krause 👍 👍 👍
Yes I live in south of France and it's the same dramatic silence. 70% of the sparrow disappears in my town.
Sad...
a silent spring? wow...this is chilling and we need to do something
Incredible work you're doing Mr Krause! Would appreciate any recommendations for reading/viewing materials pertaining to nature recording. Everything I find is out of date and rarely updated.
Amazing channel, waiting for more to discover it
Excellent Job. thx for sharing.
Bernie Krause is a genius. His work astonishes on both the artistic and the scientific levels. If he interests you, learn a bit about his career; there are some real surprises in there. Also check out Lang Elliott .
very nice!! never thought that soundscape can be so interesting!!!
Great documentary
I love this channel
Good man***Amazing sounds****Great Work*****
This makes me sad..
thank you for show another perspective of what is going on in this world.
it's sad that we are losing the soundscapes. break my heart. :(
Great work!
It breaks my heart
You guys are so much more positive and interesting than any other shows.
pure awesome knowledge
damn...that's an eye opener
massive respect
Fascinating!
Fantastic! :D
this should have more views!!!!
Wow...I did not think sounds are usable for scientific field studies. That's amazing. Doesn't he have to use the same mic setup and settings though?
Yes. Must have careful calibration and exacting protocols everytime.
I have loved Bernie's soundscapes since I discovered his work at The Nature Company years ago. (Remember that store?) He has a beautiful piece called 'Equator.' The subtle ambient tones accompanied by his nature sounds in that piece make for a peaceful marriage.
Anyone know what/who the music is in the content above?
Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Northern California
Excellent content!
I have one question. I hope someone will answer me 😊
What is the recorder this gentleman is using? Thank you!
Primarily a Sound Devices 702.
I am going through the same experience as a field recordist... Really Sad.
So beautiful
The current Corona pandemic is bringing back nature in so many places.
I thought of this video when I read about bird chirping and flora growing in Wuhan.
brilliant
I am curios on what audio eqipment he was yousing
This is insane
Long live Bernie Krause!!
Fuck ! What are we doing to our Mother Earth ? How long can she take it before we are extinct too....? Thank you Mr. Krause !
This reminds me of a personal experience.
Since I was young, there was a flock of a species of rare bird that was threatened by urbanization. From the moment I was born... the sounds of those species grew fainter and less heard. Since the last two years, I couldn’t hear any more of those calls.
Planting native plants and trees to call wildlife back
can someone say what that device is called?
someone knows how can I contact Bernie Krause? :-)
How do you get started in a career like that?
Google it
If you are truly interested, one of the best ways would to be to figure out this man's email and send him an email letting him know you are interested and would love if he could help send you in the correct direction
+Christopher Huffman lookit all you non-lazy people!
I don't want to join the career, I just wanna know how this started. What did he do differently than everyone else to get into this career?
If he's been doing it for fifty years he was probably there at the very beginning, he might even be the progenitor.
That's about when audio tech became somewhat affordable/available to the average consumer.
+Christopher Huffman TY for the reference. Bernie is often helpful to beginners or just those interested in the work or history of it in general, and suggests that they read his publications first. There is a great deal that can be found online about the chronology and development of Bernie's work, well before it was a long term " career", it was curiosity, connection, exploration, and unyielding effort to understand the voice of the natural world.
Kage_Okami fuck you too dumbass
In this is 5 years ago now....
Hmm
Silent Spring you call it? Very original.
What I call a silent spring? Come on, sir. Please give credit when it is due. There is nothing worse than stealing ideas or coining phrases from those who pioneered your industry. You would think since Rachel Carson had "Silent Spring" published in 1962 no one would remember. Just remember you are broadcasting to the entire world on UA-cam.
...and soon our foolishness will cause ourselves to be extinct, although, sadly, at first we will take out the birds and the bees...
What kind of shotgun did you use?
This makes me so sad, I need to show this to that kid who believes global warming doesn't exist
Oh no...
this is both the most coolest and most depressing job I've ever seen
How can I get a job like this?!!! I'm really interested!
As an academic field, it's called acoustic ecology. There are researchers who only focus on making and analyzing soundscapes.
Do they explain that weird drone "Maaaaxxiiimuuuss" thing or do I have to watch this entire thing only to be disappointed?
Edit:
This is not about the sounds used in the movie Extinction.
We are living through our own extinction and don't even know it.
Shit likes this keeps me awake at night and scares me to death
The Meyer.... Omg...
this makes me so sad
This shit terrifies me. This is literally end of the world stuff right here........also around where I live there used to be toads everywhere when it rained in the summer......I didn't see any toads this year.
I’m sad because the Tasmanian tiger is extinct because it’s so cute 😢
some humans just don't deserve this world...
Nice, but have you ever considered that creatures may simply move to a more favorable habitat as opposed to becoming what you refer to as extinct?
the global decline in populations of nearly all wildlife, and particularly birds, amphibians and insects, is widely documented.
Voices lost. :,-( Lives lost.
Wait-......why am I here, THERE'S PEOPLE DYING OF CORONA AND IM HERE IN 2016
:(
BALW production
Who is the 23 people who disliked this video if you are reading this please tell me why you disliked it
clicks video gets O'Reilly Auto Parts commercial
oh.
How does one get a job like this? Who is paying him?
Ooga bolga i meant to say booga
2:50 no WE aren't partly to blame for any of that... the governments and councils that insist on building and deforesting the land are whos to blame.... you people really need to stop blaming the general public for things we haven't done and have NO control over
Evil thrives when good people do nothing. If you aren't part of the solution than you are part of the problem!
"we're partly to blame for that" (in reference to global warming) what do you mean!? Humanity caused global warming all by itself, factors not associated with humanity are far too insignificant to be considered relevant.
Sooooooo depressing!!!! Humans are going to destroy this planet and there’s nothing anyone can do about it :(
Evil thrives when good people do nothing. There's plenty people can do. Stop fracking, Stop deforesting, ect. Look up on UA-cam "How Mushrooms can save the Earth".
He could be right. But this information can be skewed. Of course a forest will be silent after logging or a long drought. But go a couple miles down the road and it will sound as it has for the past few million years. Land gets damaged and eventually heals itself in a lot of cases. Now we could be going through a major extinction period, but don’t just watch this video and come to that conclusion. Research for yourself.
PLEASE UPLOAD LESS VIDEOS, you making all these 1 minutes videos and small views mess up with youtube algorithm that's why this channel is not blowing up, AND IT SHOULD
FUGGG
REPEAT WITHOUT STUPID MUSIC
There is a solution to most problems, this problem could be solved by breeding thousands upon thousands of different animals and insects, filtering and cleaning ocean water and planting more trees, possible creating forests. But this would cost a fortune.
Look up on UA-cam "How Mushrooms can save the Earth".
Impressive measures but the conclusion is not scientific, how do you come to the conclusion that the earth warming is the reason for that phenomen? Maybe it is natural cycle... 2:00 Taking the measures from Costa Rica from 1992 and 1996 we could hear a very big difference but who knows how does it sounds now in 2019? 4 years is a very short time for conclusions and this whitout the cintific criteria of biologists and others. I would just say that this video is promoting the ideology of the Earth Warming and do not considerate the little scientfic value of the impresive measures. Anyway, thank you very much for sharing the video!!!
please note that Krause is not trying to prove global warming with his data. he is taking global warming as a given due to the overwhelming consensus around it. he is showing that environments have decreasing populations of sound-making inhabitants (birds, frogs, insects). there are multiple factors involved, and it depends on the particular environment. global warming is one, but habitat loss is a huge factor also, due to logging, development and agricultural clearing. the global decline in populations of nearly all wildlife is widely documented. wake up.
You've clearly reduced the volume, as the volume of the stream itself diminishes with the years..... Blame global warming, same as everyone else. You've proved nothing.
GLOBAL WARMING???????????? lololololol
