Recording the sounds of nature's quietest places

- Gordon Hempton, who calls himself the Sound Tracker, is an "acoustic ecologist" who has traveled the world recording the sounds of nature, from birdsong and rainfall to babbling brooks and the rustling of leaves. But the noise we humans make is making it harder to find those quiet places - and, he says, it's having real consequences for wildlife as well. Bernie Krause, a musician and sound recordist, has become an audio anthropologist, documenting the sounds of nature. He also has noticed dramatic changes in some areas, such as in a Costa Rican rain forest. He helps correspondent Lee Cowan (and us) listen to the difference.

golden words he said at the end of the video. I'm so in love with nature
I still have a CD of his from 1990 - Cedar Creek. I used it as sleep sounds back before white noise was a thing, or at least, readily available. It was so soothing and peaceful.
Literally made me cry
Such a great video! Thank you
What a great video. I've been recoding nature sounds for years. I have always been on a quest to record the purest, cleanest, and quietest sounds from nature, such as a valley in the mountains where snow fall is the only sound. But like others I struggle to find nature where man's presence is not heard.
How do you get this job??
Thank You for presenting this story! I can completely relate to the issue's Mr. Hempton is bringing to light. I record nature videos in the south coast region of Oregon and north coast region of California. It is very difficult to get a clear non-sound polluted recording whether I am recording along the Pacific shores or in the Redwood forests. Even from isolated and remote locations there is all too often un-natural background noises that interrupt my recording.
This is a sensitive and difficult issue to address on many fronts in regard to economic, political and environmental concerns. Some of the commenters here have labeled this as a "fluff" piece which I totally disagree with... Mr. Hempton's story evokes serious thought and conversations and has raised the awareness level of this issue... Kudos Mr. Hempton and CBS Sunday Morning for this excellent piece!
I struggle with many unwanted sounds when I film my nature videos. : (
then your ears are unwanted many sounds, idiot.
Don't worry about the detractors, mate. Keep working at it! :)
Get a really long shotgun like Shure SM89. Or if you don't want to get a used one the Rode NTG8 is really great too also really long. Or if you don't want to spend too much money then get audio technica AT8015 shotgun. A few inches shorter but still nice and long directional.
So inspiring so beautiful. Its so hard to record JUST nature these days.
Nice stuff :) I'm always on the search for quiet places to record :)
Very interesting video, I grew up in nature with the Boy Scouts, we did just stop and listen. I had never thought to compare that time to previous listenings. I had always compared what I saw visually.
Hey awesome channel ☺ Keep it up!
This video is awesome! The forest in the state of Washington is beautiful.
Hi awesome channel ☺ Keep it up!
There is still sound far off the coast of a given country. This is not the ocean either. It's a hum that can be heard. In 6 years in the Navy I've only heard the lack of it a couple of times. It can only be noticed when its gone.
Thank you america
Hey sweet page ☺ Keep it up!
We have a small lovely small park with beautiful plants flowers. Sad there is a private airport next to it.

i'm interested in finding the microphones that can record these quiet sounds ? what should i look for ?
Get the Usi or Usi Pro from LOM Audio. They are both the same just one is XLRs and the other is 3.5mm plug. Really sensitive and detailed capture and only around $100. Some of best most accessible microphone I ever hear. As for recorder that is a personal choice. I use Roland R-07 portable because it has better audio and quieter preamp than all the zoom and tascam handhelds.
@@KandiKlover I agree with you. And if you want an accessible microphone but for sound design, I invite you to try the AKG C 411 PP contact microphone. It is rather to capture the sound in its depth nature. if not, there are the ambisonics microphones, but the professional ones are generally expensive.
Regarding the audio recorder, I add: if your budget allows it and you don't have to worry about having a slightly larger device, a recorder like the Sound Devices MixPre 3 mark II or MixPre 6 Mark II, could be very useful.
Does anyone know if any of his recordings are available to the public?
They’re on his website! Also a podcast called BirdNote: soundscapes
How to record sounds in raining without wetting the microphone?
What it means to work with the sound of nature?
"when we fall back in love with planet earth, that is when the enviromental crises will be solved"
Won't be able to fall back in love with planet earth, people aren't going to let it happen. Never going to be that quiet again. Somebody will be coming.
epidemic sound should consult this man ...
Alas, the Reagan administration essentially killed ONAC and Congress has yet to undo the damage. (:-( Gordon, Kurt and Bernie - all doing important soundscape work.
perfect for recording my quiet voices sended by my stalkers who hate me.
How ironic to get a super loud compressed rock guitar ad during this video. :/
😂😂😂
Snow is quieter
Sitting in a national forest right now on an overcast day. Rolling thunder the only sound. Be jealous
air travel needs to be severely restricted. corona is a good reminder of that. tourism must be restricted to maybe 2-3 times per decade, business travel must be all but eliminated by working online, and borders must be closed for all but essential crossings.
You can never escape the sound of nagging.
This reality makes me cry so much !! We are killing our planet without any care .. HUMANS SHOULD BE EXTINGUISHED NOT ANIMALS ! Send peace and love to all who dont think equal.
What is this even about I'm a little confused like don't you like did you actually go outside and also is this like a TV show I'm sorry to confuse and also I'm actually going to watch the whole thing and liking this guy well my mom says I cannot subscribe but I am anyways so it might bye bye

The equivalent of external silence,
is inner stillness."

Thats the noisiest. Go to the desert. Its just wind and sand.
Yeah plenty of places without aircraft overhead where you really remote and if you get lost you die fast. You just have to know how to find them, you go to the officially labeled places that claim to be and you not gonna get it. Like how people say Green Bank observatory is the msot Radio quiet zone, it's not. My Grandma's house in the remote forest is a 100 times quieter. Gotta start thinking for yourselves and be independent.
yeah, but who needs desert. protect the wild forests!
people invent too much noise. My health has declined because of it.
This is a typical "woe is us" little puff piece about how civilization is drowning out the sounds of Nature, but what's left out is who's doing this and why or what anyone who watched the piece or cares about noise pollution can do about it. There is no discussion of politics or economics which are the two drivers of noise everywhere and the eradication of Nature on a mass murderous scale. The Washington State Olympic peninsula is home to a few hundred US Navy jets called "Growlers" because they are the noisiest aircraft in our entire arsenal. They are driving the locals out of their minds and out of their homes. You might think since this fluffy piece literally begins there, mention of the US Navy invasion, with sonic booms and other phenomenally loud disturbances on an almost daily basis would merit at least a mention.
If you want to understand why the American public is so apolitical and ill informed, look no farther than a media devoted to profit at the expense of all life and or any future for humanity.
I don't know if there are enough people who care or are aware of these issues to make a blowing impact. It's about time real action is taken than just documenting the destruction of Mother Earth.
Is it really just about "me me me"? Is the loss of natural sounds just a byproduct of mass human expansion and deforestation? It's another way of showing us how human activities are heavily impacting the environmental.
Also, these sound scapists aren't the only people who care about sound; they also explained how tourists don't enjoy it.
Stop breeding.
