Somehow missed this one when it came out! 3 years on and I think midi processing is still a hugely under-utilised realm. Although Ableton Live has certainly upped their MIDI game since back then.
One thing I love about how you tackle the midi effects is that you sort of treat it like a modular setup. Always great fun and informative. Thank you, again, Ned!!!
It's funny you say that.... I got into modular during COVID and I swear the transition was made so much easier from watching Ned's videos for years. (not in terms of synthesis itself but all the insane routing possibilities) It made the open flexibility and mad routing chains easier to handle. Also Ned's old random velocity tricks etc work wonders when sending MIDI to CV. Ned is the hero we all need,
20:15 No edits. No mercy. But really, super helpful stuff to make... weird good music shit. Now I just need to afford an upgrade from Lite to be able to use half the tools you demo 😅
I was really surprised at how much it started sounded like an Analord bonus track towards the end, and almost as soon as I thought that Ned said the same!
says: but perhaps you got a limited skill set when it comes to how music works generally. says: im gonna work in c major but im going to use mode two of c major wich as we all know is d dorian also says: a very satisfying fluctuation between minor and major flavors bcs of the inclusion of the minor third and the minor seventh but also the major second and the major sixth. love your vids man! gave me allot of inspiration and laughs ! id love to share some beers with you while doing a little jam !
Love this video, so cool what you can do with random generation of note. Thanks for doing this, your depth of knowledge really shows. Please do more like this.
Man, I just loved the idea of the random midi fx mixed with the probability in the drums, and with the arpeggio in melodies also. Thank you so much, I think you just helped me find the solution for get more motivated to keep going while composing. Basically I get bored of my own loops after a while ... And in the end I can always comeback to the randomness part capture the midi in a new track and choose and edit the best loops.
I'm sitting here engrossed watching how this all unfolds into a work of art, and then I swear I heard an ice cream van, but alas no. it was the melody.. Curses!!! I mean I very much enjoyed the video and a big thank you for sharing, but now I want a cornet with a flake and my local Tesco isn't even open yet!!
Lovely video and concepts! With the random melody/notes generation I like adding a max 4 live lfo mapped to change the rate of the arpeggiator and to the random chance rate. This way you get flurries of fast notes and slow notes with large gaps in between as well as a change in how much the notes change. This is perfect for when you want things even more organically and less repetitive. In fact this makes me want to make a video about it just to see what that sounds like haha 😆
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 Just awesome how you let the computer makes the music It made me realize that I don't know anything about these midi voices amount. What it makes exactly?
