Nice! I just read Wings in the Night and man.. this has to be the absolute most brutal and bloodiest thing I've ever read! I had to rest at times and also said out loud "Hey Howard, maybe you could calm down a little" haha. Such an amazing story with so many layers to it :)
Your explanation of Kane's character arc is great. I never really thought about it because the horror elements in Kane stories, especially Wings in the Night is so powerful.
Do you feel that these stories would be good to read to my granddaughters? Seriously that was great story telling. If I still smoked I would light up right now to relax.
SPOILER ALERT! One thing I note about this story is that Kane did *not* save the village. A case could even be made that he *got* everybody killed by interfering in what had been a delicately balanced detent or truce. Yes, he avenged them all pretty good, but they're still dead. And I don't think he was ever the same after that either.
This is a great story, and I enjoyed your video and comments. You get the sense, reading these stories, that Kane's Puritanism gave shape to his drives and sense of purpose, but that he didn't feel constrained by the dogma when living it out. His use of N'Longa's cat-headed staff, for one, whenever it would help him in his task. It really is a fascinating character arc. By the way, I loved how Howard wove the Greek myths about harpies into this story. That always struck me as pure Howard crafting his tale.
Louis L’Amour’s “The 4K Kid”! Congratulations. I feel great swell of pity for anyone who comes to the Vaughan Lodge looking for trouble. From the looks of that giant Atlantean steak knife hanging in the background and the pitchfork, they won’t last very long!
Ha! Nobody comes looking for trouble here! I wanted to mention that I listened to many episodes of your podcast on the trips to and from the Lodge. Just great stuff! So interesting and well done. No wonder you’re BookTube channel is so good considering your experience.
Just ordered horror stories of R.E.H....you devil you!! Turned me into a Howard maniac! Soon the Solomon Kane will follow too...it's just how things go...Oh noooo I've been Howardfied.
Well done episode and gives a very real sense of the journey Howard was on in his own life. I just bought The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane. Looking forward to reading it this week.
Well told. Your description of the story would go well around the campfire and many of your listeners would want to find the book. Maybe even some people who don't ordinarily read.
I'm looking forward to the Swords Against Darkness analysis. Is it correct to say he wrote the Conan stories after the Kane stories ? I guess he had so many ideas with Conan he wanted to move Kane on. As for slow internet and flies - welcome to Australia ! 😉😉
Wow. That is a story I have got to read. I may have it on my set of CD-ROM disks containing 10,000 public domain stories. They run only on XP, but is worth firing up that old computer to check it out.
Nice!

Ha! I guess it depends on your granddaughters!

Thanks for the Kane story!! So glad you posted the Robert E. Howard Show today! 💜
Of course! I wouldn’t want a rebellion of disappointed Howard fans!

That was interesting about the use of harpies.
Glad to see that you're back, your summary of the story was great. I always look forward to your Robert E Howard content.
Thanks!
Nice video. I really wish I'd started reading Howard as a kid.
I was pretty young when I found Howard. Almuric, his sword and planet novel, was the first thing I read from him. I was hooked.
Louis L’Amour’s “The 4K Kid”! Congratulations.

There are worse things than being Howardfied!
Very interesting. I’m really anxious to see that last Kane episode now. Great review!
Thanks! The Kane Saga wraps up very well in that last story.

Yes, Conan was the last of his great adventure heroes.
Very interesting
Thanks!

It’s great, and it just might be in there.
Isn't the last story 'The Footfalls Within"? or was that earlier. that definitely features a change in Kane's perspective as well.
Yes! And it actually closes out Kane’s career really well.
