I enjoyed the lecture. Thanks 😊. I am currently reading The Bookseller of Florence by Ross King. I have been a fan of Ross King since Brunelleschi's Dome, another fantastic book. I can understand Vespasiano's aversion to printed books. Besides probably not being as visually attractive as hand-made books it turns out printed books were not as accurate as the traditional and painstakingly crafted hand-made books. In Alessandro Barbero's book: Inventare I Libri, the Italian historian writes of a letter written by Agostino Vespucci (cousin of Amerigo) written in 1506 to Nicolo Machiavelli. In this letter Vespucci complains to Machiavelli of the plethora of grammatical mistakes in a printed book he had just read. As per Dr. Barbero this letter can be found on the National Library of Florence website. Book printing preceded copyright law so it turns out that in the early days of the printing press anyone could reprint a book. Unfortunately this means that less scrupulous printers who would be profit and not quality driven would crank out whatever they could get their hand on ! Certain human behaviors transcend time ! 😞
