  • Learn more about Volvo's SuperTruck concept vehicle at SuperTruck.volv...
    Following five year's of development through the U.S. Department of Energy's SuperTruck program, Volvo's SuperTruck concept vehicle demonstrated more than 12 mpg during on-road testing, about twice the fuel efficiency of the average heavy-duty on-highway tractors.
    Volvo's SuperTruck combines advanced aerodynamics, vehicle and powertrain technologies to achieve a freight efficiency improvement of 88 percent - exceeding the 50 percent improvement goal set by the U.S. Department of Energy.
    From the top-of-cab solar panels powering its battery and interior lights, to its ultra-light aluminum frame and highly advanced 425 horsepower 11-liter proprietary engine, the SuperTruck concept vehicle allowed Volvo engineers to push the boundaries of heavy truck efficiency. The sleek tractor-trailer combination boosted fuel efficiency by 70 percent in road tests, and powertrain brake thermal efficiency reached 50 percent.

      but why? it has no aerodynamic stopping effect like the european trucks have with their large 'wall'-like front-end without a aerodynamic hood....the FHs are good, but in the USA, there are no silly rules for trucks like in Europe for max length of the truck

      I'm in America I drive a 2016 VNL 300 day cab, it has the 12 speed I-SHIFT and I love to drive it!! it's so comfortable I work 10 to 12 hrs a day and I don't get fatigued like I did driving my mack. I wish the fh16 was here too I really like the way they look.

    Volvo is, on current trux, using Hella headlights. Problem with those lights is that they keep headlights cover cold so in snowy conditions snow accumulates on headlights = no visibility. Driver must stop and remove snow or ice. Another issue is rubber arround windshield which is in U shape. Snow wiped by wipers accumulate in the chanel and can break wipers or whole arm. My opinion is that wipers should be vertical on parallelogram so snow will not accuulate at the bottom of windshield as is wiped by wipers. There should by some chanel on hood which will direct hot air from engine compartment on windshield

Just the size of the rear facing mirrors with no drag on aero is design genius. Elements like these mirrors actually encourage Safer Driving. After all isn,t that what it;s all about?

    • @scrimmy6969
      @scrimmy6969 8 років тому +1

      Anything is possible. But with more technology (computers and modules) comes more break downs and problems.

    • @neil78b
      @neil78b 7 років тому

      You couldn't be more backwards. Trucks break down far less than they did when they didn't have sophisticated systems... we don't go backwards with design or technology but I guess thats why you're only capable to drive it, leave the design to me and my colleagues.

    • @scrimmy6969
      @scrimmy6969 7 років тому +2

      neil I couldn't be more backwards? You are a special kind of stupid. Everything about a diesel today is unreliable. If you are a designer you need to go back to the drawing board. Trucks are much more complicated with emissions and creature comforts than they ever were before thus lower reliability. You obviously do not drive for a living. Great work at making yourself look like a total dumb shit.

    If at any point within the conception of this beast did you consult anyone that will have to repair it? Or, did you as usual make sure that no technician within the US or elsewhere will be sure to give their notice of resignation as soon as this truck hits the market? How will anyone financially responsible for vehicle maintenance expect to not loose money on a poor investment like this? with the 55%+ loss in value over 7 years with an OTR truck, how can anyone expect a positive result from a truck held together with velcro, duct tape and a prayer from the factory. I am just asking anyone capable of reading to think about this before you have to consult a firm to hire an entire shop and parts department.

    too much hype, and no actual fact. can you expect 9 mpg with 35000 lbs load? it is like saying car can go with speed of light. Scientifically impossible. Think sbout truck ten yrs ago and now. too much hype!

  • @thepowerofdreams6816
    @thepowerofdreams6816 8 років тому

    Wouldn't be better just going slower? Remember that weight consumes energy proportionally but speed does it exponentially a truck with 80.000lbs at 60mph need 30% more energy than one with 100.000lbs at 50 mph

    • @volvo245
      @volvo245 7 років тому

      No they should go twice the speed because fuck you and your tree hugging regressive group of homosexual girly men. Better to burn out than fade away!

    • @thepowerofdreams6816
      @thepowerofdreams6816 7 років тому +2

      Let me explain this, a truck and most cars have their peak efficiency between 45 and 50 mph, is when is more equilibrated the distance your travel with the fuel consumption per hour, because engines use fuel per our (g/kwh) and going slower, your tires last more, your engine last more, your gearbox wear less, and the aerodynamics aren't ass essential, so you can relax in a 389 without problem, and without thinking aero trucks will be a miracle due to aerodynamics
      We have an Scania R410, and loaded with 45 metric tons (100.000 lbs) at 50mph can do without any problem the 25l/100km thats about 9.4/9.5mpg with the trailer unloaded, and it's a heavy reefer trailer over 24.000lbs it does 13-14MPG, and the truck alone, if you drive nicelly and carefully it actually uses as much fuel as a big car, over 18MPG the only secreet is going slower.

    • @thepowerofdreams6816
      @thepowerofdreams6816 7 років тому

      My opinion about contamination, is important, if there's over 10% of carbon dioxide in the air, you die, but it can be easilly overtrhow with the trees or algae, the other problem is the other shit that comes along with carbon oxides, things like sulphure, salt, sulphuric acid, lead, mercury etc, etc, etc... and like or not those thing concentrate in the food, it rains over plants, the plants absorb many of those minerals, that concentrate x10, a cow needs over 40 kg of any kind of plants to produce a kilogram of meat, and if you keep calculating, you will find you can have a lot of problems eating contaminated meat.
