- My brand new Japanese Kei Van, a Suzuki Every, was hit by an elderly driver. You can imagine how disappointed I was. In this video I talk about the processes dealing with Police, Insurance and the repair of my car. I also share some very embarrassing moments that happened along the way.

This video has a hundred things I love about Japan. The lady leaving a note, the son calling, the son saying we will pay all expenses, the insurance company calling you, the Policeman recognizing you at the station, the Suzuki lady seeming to pay lots of attention to your pointing out the car problems, the Suzuki lady watching the traffic so you can exit, the farmer at the market picking the better fruit pkt. etc etc..... OMG I love japan
Yes Japan is not Utopia, but they do many more things right than many western countries.

I'm glad you are ok. The car was fixed and looked flawless. Made me wonder if I ever should rent a car in Japan. Both of my visits I used public transportation and very expensive taxi. Just that in America we drive the opposite side didn't make me confident about driving.
Here in the States, the dealership would be trying to pressure you into buying a new car.

Amazing service at your Suzuki dealer. Here in Canada, even a BMW dealer wouldn't treat you that well. And the cost of your repair is surprisingly very reasonable!
I so like the politeness of Japanese people. The way the Suzuki lady guided you out onto the road and then bowed was touching. I want to go back there!

@tomekichiyamamoto2177 exactly my same thought, Japanese can get a lot of stress in these type of situations dealing with gaijin ppl. It is constantly happening to me so I always ask my wife (Japanese) to be around in "important" matters otherwise it's only smiling with no depth.
Love the honesty of those involved in the crash, the police and the service centre that fixed the car. There's something about Japan...

Lord, I miss this level of customer service. In the us, or where I live now no police would be called for an accident of this scale. I also enjoyed watching the farmers market, and the little things like when they give you back your bag of fruit, they cradle it underneath with their other hand. It's just so considerate.
Are you fucked in the head police in the US come to any accident no matter how large or small
I was shocked at how cheap the insurance was. I am 30+ in the US, never had an accident, etc, and I pay 90 USD monthly for just liability.
Yes they always hand you things with two hands. Did you see how he handed her change at the farmers market? He was careful not to touch her hand with his glove.
I’ve heard they also have a pillow for luggage that comes out of the slide at airports

I'm in Miami, Florida and this would never, ever happen here. I would be entirely on my own, dealing a hit and run.

My previous car was hit on literally every side (just dings) while parked at various times over the few years that I had it, and funnily enough, no one left a note for me. Canadians aren't that nice after all.

I think the point about lack of details and the need to not jump to conclusions is a big point that many people from high context countries miss where the reading the air is more important than the words spoken

I honestly can't get over how polite the Japanese people are. I would love to live somewhere where people are so kind and polite!
I am from Texas and Im alwasy amazed by the honesty of the Japanese population. I had a "hit and run" when a truck reversed into my car and left. no note was left and the apt complex said they could not pull any video footage (this was over 15 years ago). For the Japanese police AND the family member to call you is amazing. Very honest and wonderful how they all took care of you.
I agree! It's a testament to their honesty and consideration.
The most amazing thing to me is that the drivers insurance company rang you and said they'd cover the repairs, most places now they'd force you to make use of that legal assistance to actually get that payout.

I’m so glad you weren’t in the car and that no one was injured! The dealership is definitely at the top of their customer service game. What is normally a harrowing experience was made much less so by the politeness and care of everyone involved! I’m so glad everything worked out so well!!
In Melbourne 95% that you never find the person who hit your car , happened to me twice in car park when I do shopping . Japanese are honest and did a right thing , the lady at the dealer so polite , hat off to her the way she run to the street and watching traffic for you to get out .

Hi Chani, a fascinating video! The car accident "nightmare" is in fact another evidence of how great Japan is. The service you received from the Suzuki dealership was something out of this world. I've been living in New Zealand for 30 years and have never experienced anything like that! On the contrary, the service here is mainly rude. For example, yesterday I bought a carpet rug for my living room from a popular shop. When I got to the check out to pay, at first they wanted to charge me the full price and were denying that it was on special. I stuck to my guns and they fixed the price that was advertised online, but wasn't on their system. The carpet is quite heavy. No staff offered to help me to my car. And the shop wasn't busy at that time. I am not going to start on the dirthy and quite hostile farmers markets here. Anyway, I am glad that your car was repaired exactly the way it was when brand new. We love Millie. Julia & Tiger Lily ❤😻

I was used to hostile, disinterested, and poor service in California as well - things have changed since I moved to another state. It’s so refreshing. Also in California, one the rare occasions that I went to the farmer’s market it was an INDULGENCE as the prices were HIGHER than in stores…yet, not long ago, they started accepting Welfare or government issued money.
Curious, when my family was forced to do that we didn’t even buy NAME BRAND items - choosing black and white “generic” to save and pinch pennies!

Your channel is my favourite of all the life-in-Japan channels out there. I am so sorry that you had this unpleasant incident. You made a very interesting video out of it. Fortunately, no one was injured and thanks to the situation and your insurance and the very good Suzuki service team, everything seems to have come to a happy end.
What a pain! But I'm so impressed with the car dealership's service. I noticed when I lived in Japan that they have a much higher staff to customer ratio than anywhere else I've lived. I've never forgotten the airport shuttle bus I caught being waved off by a team of workers who'd helped stow the luggage, sell the tickets, answer customer questions, etc. In Australia the driver would do everything - there would no other staff. I wonder how it works economically. I know salaries are lower, but prices are also lower.

This happened to our car in Japan too. It was parked in a lot when someone hit it, but we didn’t notice until after driving home. A few hours later, I saw the bumper hanging and scratched while in the garage.
Thankfully, our dashcam recorded everything. It stays on after parking, and I found footage of someone backing into the car and driving off-a clear hit-and-run. We reported it to the police and they tracked down the driver, arranging for us to meet at the same parking lot.
The driver initially claimed they didn’t realize (yah,... right), but when I showed the video in front of the police, they didn't have much else to say. The 100,000-yen repair was fully covered by their insurance. Because it was a hit-and-run, the officer said we could press charges, but we declined. Later, the person called to apologize and offered to bring us a gift, but we declined-we just wanted it fixed. I think they were just worried we might press charges. They were just a liar in my opinion that got caught, and I didn't want anything else to do with them.
This experience reinforced how valuable a dashcam is. If we didn't have one, I would be 100,000 yen short out of my own pocket. I'm glad someone left a note and involved the police in your case-also a great reminder to ensure to park within the lines! Sorry this happened to you. It is never a fun experience, but good video and information to share though!!

Another great video, Chani. I guess if there's any consolation, it's that you weren't IN the car when it happened. Nonetheless, it sounded like a very frightening phone call to receive, which could have been eased so much if the police officer had told you your car had been hit while it was parked. How funny that you met your policeman from the prison! 🤣
It looks like the Suzuki dealership did a wonderful repair job. I LOVE that level of service that only happens in Japan. When I lived there when I was 20 and had a car, I used to marvel each time I drove into a petrol station. There would always be three people running to greet me; one filling the tank, one cleaning the front windscreen, and one the back, followed by the customary bowing as I drove away. It's the only place you get to feel like royalty without all the drama that comes with it!
I'm glad you're safe, and that Millie seemed obvious to all the drama, sleeping in her cardboard house. 😻

Even better than here in the States, with our expression, "the customer is always right". (I am not even certain how widespread this this mentality is, anymore. It was the way of handling things when I worked in retail, decades ago...)

What wonderful service at the Suzuki dealer! And the mother who hit your car and her son did the right thing and were very apologetic. I have never visited Japan but always heard the Japanese people are polite and honest.
As a tourist I would be afraid to rent a car in Japan (especially because they drive on the “wrong” side of the road) and your story only confirms that view. I’ll stick to public transit.

The Japanese are honourable and left their details at the accident. He even apologised over the phone for his mother.
This would not happen in Australia (my car was hit in car park).
The service repair was smooth and service exceptional in Japan (compared to my experience of repair).
Bottom line, if you have to have a car crash experience, much better to have it in Japan! 😊

Right? My car has a big white mark on it from being hit and I'll pay a 700 dollar excess to get it fixed cause they didn't leave details.

Where I live (Vancouver) one would Never EVER hear an apology from either the person who caused the damage and certainly not the insurance company! Maybe they did in the old days, all I know is that I've lived here all my life and this city has become the land of the inept and entitled.
I would love to live in a culture that values respect, accountability, and politeness!

Just so love the efficiency and respect in Japan. Here in the UK, if people hit your stationary car, they generally just leave without leaving their details. Glad all was sorted and you can get back to your camping trips. I don't know what was more scary - the police giving you very little information in the beginning, leaving you wondering if this was some kind of scam, or you announcing to everyone in the police station that you had been in prison 🤣🤣!

I have had two brand new cars hit and insurance here in the states refused to repair them properly. We are old and feel taken advantage of. Im so glad you are taken care of.

Sorry to hear about your car. If it happened in Australia, they would just drive off. Just had a neighbour (rental) yesterday reverse into my house wall (we share a driveway), they had no intention of telling me (wall was significantly damaged). It was my other neighbour who sent me the footage and I approached them today. They tried to deny it then when I told them I had it on camera. I asked them why they didn't leave a note. Worst thing is they're vacating tomorrow (as it's a rental). They've said they'll fix it but I've contacted the real estate and the owner of the property (who I'm friends with). Hoping the real estate will fix it from the renters bond. *sigh*. It just ruins your day. I love how polite and considerate Japanese people seem to be. Wish Aussies were like that.

In the U.S., that would be considered a "hit and run," and you'd have to fix your own car. If you're lucky enough to find the person who hit your car in a parking lot accident, the fault is often split 50-50. Police typically don’t respond to accidents that occur in parking lots. Overall, this whole experience was very pleasant because of the wonderful service you received from the locals.
That was a suspenseful episode. But I am so glad you were not in the car when the accident happened. Also in the end it turned out to be a very positive experience for you, especially with Suzuki looking after you. Blessings!😅😅😅

Amazing service all around! Let me tell you one of my embarrassing moments and bad English/italian translation. I happened to meet a work colleague far away from the office and I didn’t recognize him as he was not in his usual security uniform. He presented me to his wife and I apologized for not recognizing him WITH HIS CLOTHING ON! I meant to say Uniform and not clothing. I’m glad everyone got a little giggle out of it. 😅

watching how Japan deals with accidents makes me want to cry. watching how insurance deals with accidents makes me want to cry. watching how your dealership deals with accident repair makes me want to cry. here in california where i am everything will be bungled and frustrate you to death. and most probably no one would have left a note or called the police to begin with so you would just come out to the station and find your car damaged.

Japan is the most honest and trustworthy country, on late September I visited Aomori and forgot my backpack on the bus. After l went into the train station and I realized I left my backpack on the bus. Then I went to the bus ticket office to get help and after a few calls from the staff to get contacted to some drivers that they might look it out for me. No result then the staff suggested to report to the police by the train station as well. So the police have an interpreter on the phone to collect my information and report it in writing in order to proceed. In 2 hours they located my backpack which I have 2 passports credit cards and some cash in it, everything was untouched and waiting for me to pick up at the bus depot. Amazing service and amazing people in Japan. I was expecting it’s might take a few days to get it back because I trust Japanese customs and culture. I’m so impressed by the quality of the people they have! Worth the trip and experience!

I saw another UA-camr say that insurance fraud is very common in Japan, so you are lucky you got an honest person. And the cameras are a great idea, I've been looking at some recently too.
It seems like a lot of people are getting dash cams these days.

I just discovered your channel and watched a few of your videos. As someone who turned 50 this year, going to Japan to teach is something I have been looking into. It is extremely difficult to find any information for anyone doing this in our age bracket. I'll mention that I haven't seen others mentioning, honestly under $1,500 (USD) for all that they fixed is really good. There is no way it would cost anywhere *near* that here in the United States. Also, everyone at the dealership was absolutely amazing. What fantastic and friendly service. Kudos to the person stopping to leave a note and calling the police station right away to report it and the son calling to apologize on behalf of his mother. Again, it's definitely a rarity also here in the States.

I can’t believe she didn’t think someone hit her car while it was parked in the car park… that’s the first thing that popped in my head. If you parked your car out and about and get a phone call from the cops saying there’s been an accident with your car and since you were not driving your car it means one of two things… someone stole your car and crashed or someone crashed into your car at the car park 😂

I can imagine what a stressful and frustrating train ride that must have been, but it seems like everyone, including the "guilty party" pulled together to get Mori back in shape and looking good! I look forward to the next camping adventure.... and thanks for all the good tips you gave us who drive in Japan. I will make sure I follow them when I drive my Suzuki Lapin around.
