- I recently went inside a women's prison in Japan. I managed to interview one of the Prison Officer's and discover all about the inmates and what life is like on the inside in a Japanese Jail. I found out what its like and how many foreginers are in a womens prison.
If you are new to the channel, my name is Chani and I am a middle aged Australia who was stuck in a rut and moved to Japan to live. I bought an Akiya or empty house and started renovating. I'd love it if you joined the community.

Interesting video….. You actually have done something that other Japanese UA-camrs cannot do. That is randomly speak to a Japanese person and actually find out and ask questions and get the answers. Well Done. This is the Japanese UA-cam content I seek.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your comment. 😃
True!
The prison guard you talked to is very compassionate. It was sweet that he felt sad to see someone return to the prison after being released.
I got the impression that he really is a nice person that cares. 🩷
Saw another video on UA-cam talking about poor elderly Japanese 🧓 committing petty theft just to get arrested so they could have a warm meal and a place to sleep 😢 the living costs are just increasing globally
Wow, when you said you went to prison in your other video, the first one I ever watched from you, I was like no way she went to prison. 😂 I had to come watch this one to get the tea. Now I have found another favorite channel. Subscribed. 💚
I’m glad you liked the video! 😄thanks for subscribing ❤️
Me too. I heard “apron that I got in prison” and was whuuuut?!?!
@@just.julie.axon.addicthaha that's exactly what drew me to Chani's channel as well. 😂 It was the first video I came across and I was hooked from the very first few minutes. Great content.
Brilliant that you stumbled across thus prison and were allowed to take us along. Thank you
Glad I could film in some parts.
Such an unexpected and fascinating video Chani.
And all done entirely by chance. By taking part in manufacturing goods they not only remain occupied but stimulated too, which probably reduces the conflict between prisoners and staff.
So true. Keeping busy would be important.
This may be the first UA-cam video regarding women's prison in Japan and your Q&A is helpful to understand the situation of women's prison. I look forward to watching your next videos which are dufferent from typical foringer's UA-camrs in Japan.
Thanks so much 🩷
I never thought this subject would be so interesting!
Thanks 👍
I’m glad you found it interesting!
This was the most interesting culture video I’ve seen in a long time! I love the idea of prison festivals and being able to buy the goods made there. Very different model than we have here in the USA
I am glad you enjoyed the video!
We use to have these in the U.S., but it is viewed as captive labor. This was mainly in prisons in the south such as Angola.
@@melissas4874 Prisoners at Angola still work the penal farm to produce food for the prison's kitchen. Inmates also have access to certain workshops to make crafts they then can sell at the yearly rodeo open to the public.
That was so amazing! More of these please Chani, random stops at unusual things in your area, rather than just another "touristy things to do" video. Although I love those as well ;)
Yes it was a total random stop on my walk. Glad you liked it 😃
That was different and very informative. Thanks for sharing. Saw recently, a lot of older women are repeat offenders that steal so they can go to prison and have food and accommodation! Quite sad.
i have relatives in Japan... and i can say this is true from what they told me. Some foreigners who go there as a tourist and then decide to overstay and work illegally and when they are finally caught, they would say they are too broke to go back to home country and would rather stay in prison there because it's better than their life at their home country. Some instances Japan would give in and cover their ticket to send them home but most of the times it's the embassy. I heard some would be there for years before they get sent back forcefully.
I was shocked to hear that too. 🥲
I was so surprised by how openly the prison employee discussed his workplace. I have a family member who is a prison guard in women's prison in North America and she is not permitted to discuss so much.
I agree. Didn’t expect to get so many questions answered.
@@ChaniJapan You asked excellent questions too - you have a natural talent!
Very fascinating. Definitely a unique episode. Not an expected topic. Thanks for this fantastic insight.
I agree. It was a lucky chance to find the gates open! 😃
One of the best videos I've seen on YT. Very informative. If you're incarcerated, I'm sure there is dread over the prospect and what the prison would be like, but that place seems really aimed at giving the ladies purpose and how to be productively occupied during their time.
I'm so glad you found it informative! I was surprised that they are keeping the inmates busy and providing support for them.
This was a very unexpected video, thanks for the insight. We have similar thing in Sweden one time per year where we get to meet diff organizations including fire/police/ambulance and military.
I’ve never heard about a prison open day before. That’s cool you can do it in Sweden too😃
@@ChaniJapan Sorry Chani, I wasnt specific about prison day in Sweden but that'd be cool actually! We just have a day to talk to organizations/authorities in my municipality and blue light organizations
What a fascinating video! Thank you Chani!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it interesting. I was happy to stumble upon it. 😃
Well that was unexpected! I've never even visited a US prison. I'm glad you were able to go and that they allowed you to video the visit.
What beautiful work. Even shoes!
Thank you for sharing this fascinating opportunity.
Hi Chani, This is a fascinating video. Thank you for sharing.
🌻🇬🇧🫶🐈
My pleasure 😊
Another great video Chani. You give us all such a great insight into Japanese life. I'm really enjoying your Japanese course too! You're a fabulous teacher!
Thank you so much!
Being from a country where prisons are overpopulated and prisoners are not educated, not ressocialized and don't really work in the prison, this video was very touching for me. The HOPE I felt for these women who are being thought to communicate and create useful and helpful things. I'm sure there are other prison realities in Japan but as long as there are good realities which makes prisoners understand they don't belong in cages, it's a small step forward to a better society.
I found some positives in the interview. I’m not sure about the realities of prison life. I hope there is some hope for their future.
I felt the same. I've heard terrible things about Japanese prisons, but the guard seemed so gentle everyone seemed so proud of the place that it gave me hope that not all prisons in Japan are terrible places.
@@megand6233I’d like to know any "rumors" you’ve heard about Japanese prisons (probably not true, I assume). I think harsh rumors help deter crime, so I consider them beneficial.
Hi Chani. I loved this video, it was very very interesting. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😃
Loved the video. 👍🏽😊And your Japanese is excellent!!! 😍👍🏽
Thanks so much! I appreciate that. 😊
Really enjoyed this one. Thanks for this.
Thanks!
Thank you so much ♥️
Very interesting video. Happy you found aprons! 👍👏❤🥰🥰✨
I thought they were so cute!
That was really interesting. The Prisons look really modern and clean. Most of our prisons date from the Victorian period and look pretty grim and foreboding.
I was surprised too
This was really interesting, I particularly liked the interview with the guard, he seems to really care for the prisoners.
Thankyou for showing us Millie at the end ❤
Loved the video Chani wow did not know there were so many prisons in Japan
I am so glad I found this channel today. I have been watching all day. It's so good!
Thank you for watching ❤️
Very interesting, Chani! Thanks for sharing with us. ❤
Thanks for watching! 😊
Hi Chani,
You are lucky how you managed to interview one of the Prison Officers and also found out the amount of foreigners in a women's Prison.
He was very generous with his time. Nice guy.
So interesting ❤, thank you, from 🇫🇷
Glad you enjoyed it! 👋
This was one of the most interesting videos! I loved learning more about Japan's prison system with your questions. So cool! You have the best videos and are my favorite Japan-centered channel.
Great interview on a sensitive topic!
BTW, are you getting ready to become a Kansai Obachan with those aprons?
Yes. I hope to embrace the inner obachan. Not sure how comfortable I am going public in it 🤪
Excellent episode..even the prisons in Japan look high class..thank you for including Millie at the end..can't wait long enough for your next episode. The location looks amazing 🩵🩵🩵..
Thanks so much! Millie had to inspect the new purchases! 💕
A prison shop....so neat...love the aprons.Thank you Chani🙏🏼
Thanks. I love the cat one with long sleeves. I’ve never seen a long sleeve apron before 😃
Such an interesting video. Thanks for making and sharing it.
Thanks 🩷
Recent subscriber Chani and interesting to see Japan from your perspective. When traveling last year in Maine, USA they have a prison store and the wood working skills are top notch. I have purchased numerous nautical lamps, cutting boards, and other items every time I am in Maine which is 1500km from our home.
Thanks for subscribing! I hope you enjoy the channel.
Very interesting video. It is so fascinating listening to you speak so fluently with Japanese people.
Finding out about the prison was really interesting for me too. Thanks for watching 😃
I’ve heard that Japanese prison feel safe and some people have no way to take care of themselves other than going to prison, that’s why it’s an older crowd. But I’ve heard they’re actually nice
@@largedoglover99 I did hear that too sadly.
Super interesting video, digging below the surface of normal every day culture. Would really appreciate more similar to this, looking deeper in to Japanese culture.
Thanks! I will see what comes up and share it with you for sure 🩷
Really fascinating Chani and curiously moving. A real insight into something we don't often get the chance to do even into our own prisons. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they had a website so that people from abroad could support the work of the prisons. I guess the postal costs would make it difficult. Thanks again Chani, I love your videos.
What a great idea. I’m sure their aprons would sell! 😃
So interesting! Thank you for sharing this with us!
My pleasure! 😃
fabulous insights Chani thanks for creating this
That was very interesting! I'd love to see all the hand crafted wares.
I wish I could show you more.
This clip is really something! 滅多にこんな機会はないですよね。ありがとうございます。
It really was a special chance.
Wow, would have liked this to be longer. Super interesting. Thanks!!!
This was so interesting! And your way with a UA-cam thumbnail really cracks me up!
I had a lot of fun making this thumbnail.
Thanks Chani, love your videos. Keep on doing it!
I appreciate the support and encouragement ! 😊
I've said it before and I have to say it again because its true: You produce the most interesting videos and show us things we otherwise wouldn't get to see. It was very interesting to see how a women's prison in Japan functions and all the goods that the prisons produce. Thank you, Chani ❤ and thanks also for the adorable clip of Millie in her cute little house at the end! 😽 Xoxo Robin
Thanks so much Robin 🩷
Thanks for sharing the story 💛
💛
This was amazing! Thank you for sharing! And for asking so many interesting questions! I don't think I ever saw anything on the Japanese prison system.
Thanks for watching! I am glad you found it interesting.
What an interesting video. Really enjoyed it.👏
Thanks! I’m glad you found it interesting.
Thank you Chain for this interesting video. You're doing great work.
Thanks very much. This is a pretty rare opportunity! 😮
Thanks I was lucky to get the chance.
Your Japanese is so natural and nice. I’ve been here forever and seen all kinds of Japanese speakers but (not at all in a negative way) you’re so cool and relaxed with the language. I’ve seen a lot of people trying to hard to speak keigo or just throw in unnatural words they don’t know how to use, but your conversation with the prison guard was so natural and relaxed and you even ended on a see you! In English haha. Love it.
I have an Australian friend here who speaks Japanese fluently but she STILL starts her fully Japanese conversations with a ‘HOW YA GOIN!? for no reason. I honestly think she just likes to frighten them.
Aww thanks😃 I think my Japanese has morphed into ‘obaasan’ mode. Most people I talk with are elderly and so friendly.
This was so informative, thank you for sharing!
You’re welcome! 😊👋
Well, that was interesting! I had not expected such a topic much less a tour, of sorts! The items created and produced by the prisoners looked like pretty good quality. Hopefully they are also learning skills that can be used after release. It would have been interesting to know more about their treatment programs but there wouldn't be time for that in the video and I guess it might not be an area of general interest. As a nurse (now retired) I once worked with addicts so I was interested in that kind of rehab program. Anyway, overall I enjoyed this video!
I agree about the treatment program. It was a little outside the scope of this video. I’d love to be able to hear from an inmate what it’s like. Thanks for watching!
Hi, 😊
Qué magnífico video el de hoy, me gustó mucho. Revelador en verdad. Gracias por compartir esto 😊😊.
Milli en si penhouse, jaja😅 me encanta verlas. Abrazos 🤗 🤗
I am glad you enjoyed it 😊
What a great video. Thank you for sharing your life with us. In the U.S. the typical item prisoners make are license plates for cars not aprons!
Wow! That’s a lovely story! So cool that you still have it!
That was very unexpected! Fascinating! I wouldn’t mind being in a prison where they do craft haha but I didn’t like the accommodations 😂. Think I’ll stay home 😄great tour thanks Chani. Have a great week.😊
Good idea to stay home 🤣. I think the routine and rules would be too strict.
@@ChaniJapan 😆 I’ll stay home then. I can do what I want here haha
ここイベントしてたんだ、来年行ってみます
It's so interesting the differences and rather surprising there is a whole festival to show off the prison. That apron looks handy!
There were a lot of children there as well so it was like the whole community is involved in the prison.
@@ChaniJapan Honestly sounds like the way it should be everywhere.
This is an amazing video. Thank you! ❤
Thank you🤗
Ha, Chani, slowed down with subtitles I was able to understand a lot of the warder :) Seems like I'm getting somewhere after all.
Very interesting, thank you.
That's great! What a great way to practise listening. 🩷
Is the prison shop always open to the public? Interesting! thank you for sharing! Arigatougozaimasu.
Yes. It’s open most days to the public.
It’s so funny I was looking for an apron yesterday! I wish I could find one so easily
Me too! As soon as I found out they made them I knew I wanted one.
I loved all the information in this video.
Thanks for watching! 😃
Very interesting! It looks like the make nice things there. Plus, how cute was little Millie at the end in her new cat house
I thought they had some beautiful handmade things. 😃
Great video different and very insightful
Thanks so much!
It’s really incredible that they have that program of the prisoners making crafts and being able to buy their art. I think it’s amazing the beautiful things they make. It probably helps with rehabilitation for them once they are released from prison to be able to have a skill so they can be a part of the working community. Thank you for this video. It would be nice if all prisons could adapt that program. I’m sure it would help them have a better chance at having a second chance in life.
Prisoners in Japan have to work as part of their sentence. They receive a very small salary for their work. That said, work is very beneficial for them in terms of passing time, keeping physically and mentally well and rehabilitation. The prisons work hard to find suitable contracts which can be fulfilled which bring work into the prison. In addition to partnering with companies they have set-up their own brand.
I used to visit Wakayama Prison for my job. I was impressed with the prison and staff.
I enjoyed watching the video about the way the prisoners are able to earn money from crafts they make. The aprons are reasonable cost too.
I loved this one!
Amazing episode!
Thanks 😃
Wow very interesting and different video, your becoming a real u-tube interviewer great job
Thanks so much. I’ve enjoyed getting outside my comfort zone and asking if it’s ok to film and ask questions.
Very interesting! It's about what I expected Japanese prisons might be like. Thank you for sharing -- and excellent editing! :)
Thanks so much! I am glad you enjoyed it.
Interesting video, just found you tonight and enjoying you
Such a good video! I learned alot. Thank you so much.
Thanks! 😊👋
This was a interesting video. I enjoyed the questions. I often wonder what kind of crime happens in Japan. A women prison especially. I like how you encompassed the data of the reality.
I’m glad you found it interesting! 😊
Wow Chani, what a great and super informative, interesting video! I really enjoyed it very much. I never would have thought that the average age of inmates is so high or that people spend a long time there for relatively minor crimes like theft or drug use ( not to be compared with trafficking!). I very much like the products they make and the fact that they have a structured daily schedule with work, classes, counseling. The example with kleptomania was quite tragic. The guard you were able to have the interview with was great!
He was really kind. I think he would be a good guard because he really cares.
Fascinating video.
Wow such frank answers to your questions.
I know, I was surprised! 😮
That type of apron is like a uniform for adult women living in the countryside in Japan, and my mother wears one from morning until night.
I love my new one. It’s got cats on it!!!! 😽
Remind Malborne prison old one. Not any more prisons, museum. Japanese prison system is very impressive. Mate!!
I never knew prisons even did open houses! I think it's a wonderful event and also helps teaches locals (including kids!) about prisoners and what they do. After all, prisoners are also human beings.
I hope some of the revenue from the sales of items the prisoners made helps to enrich the prisoners' lives in some way.
It is a wonderful event to open up the prison to the public, and it's really good to see the public embrace it. I hope the proceeds go back into the prison.
Very interesting. thank you
Beautiful woodwork to shoes amazing!
Those were great questions you asked at the prison!
Thanks
61 prisons! Chinese and Korean! Who would have thought?
It was really surprising.
Chinese and Koreans are the largest immigrant and ethnic groups in Japan, so I don't think that's surprising.
Very interesting vlog! 😅
Glad you found it interesting! 🩷
Love it very enjoyable video
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
You are really starting to surpass other UA-camrs with your content. Thank you for sharing. Very interesting. If you could, I would love to see an upload about schooling in Japan. I've seen some small things that make it look like a preferred upbringing for a child over Western society schools. It's interesting you talk about lack of resources. My friends son was in prison in W.A. and she always use to say how there was a lack of mental health care she felt frustrated that her son would never receive the help he needed in prison.
I will do my best. At the moment on the news they are talking about a lack of resources in schooling too.
I think the Japanese style of wearing long-sleeve aprons is genius and should be the norm everywhere. I hate when my hoodie and clothes end up smelling like fried onions or curry, and this would definitely help prevent that by keeping the smells from sticking to my clothes while cooking! I need to check if I can find one in Muji!
I thought it would be perfect for winter over my clothes. Even with long sleeves!
Very interesting
I’ve never had a chance to visit a prison before so it was really interesting to go to an open day.
Good video!
Thanks!
Thank you Chani for a fascinating video 😊. Your interview with the prison officer was insightful. The items that they sell are fantastic 😍. I'm so glad that Miss Millie came out of her house for the prison items inspection 😻🐾
Yes. Anything new into the house needs to be checked.
Really interesting post! I was kind of surprised that they would have a woman who is 80 years old in prison. Unless she's a murderer ? Sounds like most of their is there are not violent crimes. I have read various things about the Japanese prison system over the years though as far as potential human rights violations. That guard seemed very honest and nice. I was pretty shocked that their fire trucks don't seem to go very fast. I think it's really great that they teach them all a trade instead of just locking them in a cell most of the day. Nice to see Millie enjoying her house again! She is such a gorgeous cat
How interesting. Especially that they have a structure within the prison and that they don’t use EVs as apart of their law enforcement fleet.
👋🩷
Very interesting! I’m curious on if the prisoners get any of the proceeds of the things they make. It’ll be nice if they did so maybe it can be saved and used for an easier transition back to society
That is a very good question, I am not sure. 😊 I would think the proceeds go back into the prison and the programs to support the prisoners.
@@ChaniJapan that’s true too! Either way it would benefit the prisoners I hope
