- Here's an unprepared and spur of the moment, educational walkaround video of a brand new Caterpillar 627K.
The story behind this video:
I was visiting Gilliam and son's in Bakersfield California touring some of their sites, when one of their brand new Kseries scrapers just got delivered. Although I wasn't planning to do a walk around video, but I had to cease the opportunity and this video is the result of that.
In this video I explain some stuff that may be useful to some scraper operators, especially new ones. I explain some parts of the machine, some scraper lingo and point out some stuff that very few may even know about. Hopefully by watching this video you guys can learn something new.

Super interesting! I ran 657s on&off in 1969-1974. I liked them! Cushion hitch second best invention after electricity. I learned how to operate all types heavy equipment. Fed&sheltered the family doing a job I liked. Recently retired after 38 years as a dentist. Still have an interest in the big iron
Great video. Love full length walk arounds. This is quality content
Excellent video Scott. Best video by far on UA-cam explaining how a scraper works.
Wow I didn't think it was that great but thanks!!!
Pushysix® it was. Enjoyed the heck out of it. IUOE Local 12 SoCal baby!
Scott thank you for taking your time to explain stuff? Great video of a brand new machine!!
What an excellent film. Really informative, AND interesting.
I learned a little more about the scrpaer from this video thanks very much and im actually going to be running one soon so this helps alot!
The new scrapers have came a long way in making it more easy to operate. All the comforts of home. Cams, air cond ,easy ride hitch's that work. good video
Man these new mech are kick ass. I started out on a 631 B an 637 D...an a 633 D when i left i had a 623 G . I am glad to see all you new guys are doing it in class..... Be safe . Forgot to say i worked for R.E.MONKS in colo spgs...
Awesome 👍 video! We never had scrapers on the east coast. I love all Earth moving equipment. I have many years in excavators up to 1250 Komatsu. Love seeing things I never got to run!
your eyes must have been closed . i ran them in pa. in the 60's
By the way, a very nice explanation of a duel engine scrapper. Loved it entirety.
I started out on cable operated track pans ( D8 pulling a scraper ). Graduated eventually to a couple new 637D scrapers in around 1978. Wow, that cab setup is a LOT easier on the operator than those were!
Tyvm for this video! My gosh that machine's huge
Great video, many yrs ago, watching a few scrapers working on a road project ,near me, as the scraper was working a mechanic was sitting on the rear engine, and making adjustments to the engine as the machine was in the cut, scary stuff, would definitely not be allowed these days, keep up the good work, from S Wales, u.k
Great video! More like this please 😎
Old friend of mine and I went to San Diego 15 years ago to pickup a D8. Went by a friend of his house. I think his name was Bob Templeton. They told me walk out back door, I did and counted 12 scrapers, 8ks , 834s lined up. They used to say the best thing you can do with a twin eng is throw rear eng away. Didn't know what they ment till I worked for Co. had 627Bs. I have 615 c and 613b. Great video.
Used to be Templeton excavating and grading
Templeton ran 633 paddle wheels in the early 70's.
@@jpk2420 That was him. Had beautiful home in hills above escondido. He told me 633s were good in sand by town when they started out then went to 31s inland and 37s when hit the hills. Those old guys forgot more then ill ever know.
Never knew they were that expensive, impressive machine. The DPF and DEF are two parts of exhaust after treatment. You're basically correct on the DPF part, filter in the exhaust, gets full enough and eventually gets regenerated to burn off the soot inside. The DEF is used in another process called the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) that uses a catalyst and an injector and injects that DEF in and reduces NOx. It's a pain in the ass as its more to go wrong, but its cool that you can wipe a rag on the inside of a exhaust pipe and its pretty damn clean.
I was running the 627F in North Dakota’s oil fields. That’s where I got hurt. Had a hydro leak and had the bowl down. Complete stop. Idiot came up behind me and hit me in 3rd gear. Blew out 2 discs in my neck and 3 in my back. Ended my career
The idiot thought I was waiting for him to do a push/pull. Even though I wasn’t in the cut and we didn’t do any push pull on the site.
Went to the hospital and then drove 15 hrs home with my head resting on the driver side window the whole way because I couldn’t even hold my head up. Still deal with the effects 10 years later
Thank you!
beautiful this machines are from caterpillar brand good review thanks.
orange? I always thought CAT was yellow...
It’s called Cat yellow but when its hit by direct sun it looks orange
Hello from Oklahoma. I used to work for Guinn in Bakersfield ( your competition). I drove lowboy and worked on equipment.
Real fine vid pard! Them new girls are sure a hell of alot nicer than ole school!! I'm used to lol 😎
I work on these beasts as a mechanic. It's silly how fast they can get, especially for how heavy they can get. So much kinetic energy.
Those Scraper's have along way from the one's I drove in the 70's !!!
Ditto. 621....1974
My grandfather owned over 60 of those in the late 60s and earl 70s in California. No enclosed cabs, hydraulics were just coming into play.
Those older machines ride better believe it not.
Great job on this video! Very detailed and informative!
Wow just watched this and Joe pay dirt and never knew so much to know about scrapers
I remember my Uncle and Dad took me up to where they where cutting I-26 from NC to TN....straight through the Mountain's. Gilbert Southern (TN Side) and Taylor and Murphey (NC Side) had a fleet of "Pans" and off road trucks. I can remember the giant Cat shovel I belive it was a 6040B???? (there's was 2 in the US at that time) that thing was loading these off road trucks with 2 passes and that was a heaping load of Rock. I accredited that trip to my love of Heavy Equipment vids, awesome vid!
*EDIT* CAT 5230 was the Shovel they used by Gilbert Southern.
Wright Brothers did the TN side .....Gilbert and Southern did the NC side from hwy 19 exit to the state line.....Taylor and Murphy which goes by HMN now did the part from hwy 19 back to Weaverville NC. I had a friend that worked at Carolina Cat back then ...all he did was weld on the buckets for that shovel.
@@haroldrenfro730 yes Sir that's 100% correct I appologize, and it was a CAT 5230 they had up there, when I was in high school we used to ride Dirt Bikes and 4 Wheelers back in there....you could ride for hours and hours. The fellas at GS wasn't to bad plus we was just right there off of Higgens Creek where some family used to live, blasting for the road destroyed the foundation on that old house so some Gilbert Southern folks cut and stuck I think 4 big ass Oak Logs and Blast Rock under that old house so my Great Uncle could die there....i don't remember their names but it was 6 or em and 1 Super, didn't charge em a dime to hook plumbing back up or nothin A+ Guys. It took along time to get that open, I remember the 4 lane just stoped when you got to Marshill for a large part if my life hell 18 years of it, good memories
bonjour,merci superbe video,belle machine.
We called the center gear in the hub a sun gear, and the driven gears were the planetary ones. Interesting video, a lot more things going on than most of us realize.
It's called a Planetary Gearset, and you are right about the internal part names, but "the Planetary" is the correct name for the entire assembly.
@@ke6gwf actually it's planetary
@@danielginther4879 lol, failed by spell check.
I DO know how to spell it, when I actually look at it!
@@ke6gwf I fully understand that, have a good one!
I’m amazed the back of the tractor has all that pipe work sticking out :o
I have loved Scrapers since I watched them build the Huddersfield sections of the M62 in 1966/68
Good work , weneed this machine in ALGERIA . thank you so much
Caterpilla marca mundial show parabéns.
I've been waiting for someone to do something like this. Thanks, great job. Obvious you have experience with this type of machine.
Didn't know that new Cat equipment was now offered in orange.
Think he ment cat yellow!
Hi, FarmerDan 24.
If you are serious about that comment, remind me to never give you an electrical wiring job to do with all that color coding.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful color-blindness. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
You clearly didn't watch the video. Because "Pushy6" was referring the machine as being orange and black, while we all Cat is Cat yellow and black.
I work for CAT, when it’s directly hit by sun the Cat yellow paint looks orange
Wow. The difference between this machine and the old Terex twin Detroit diesel scrapers I ran 30 years ago is night and day. This scraper cradles the operator in the lap of state-of-the-art luxury. The scrapers I ran blew out your ear drums even with ear protection, beat you to death, and if you had to make an emergency stop, you dropped the bowl because the air brakes didn't work.
Is the K 8spd front trans and 4 speed rear trans like the older 627s?
Great stuff
DEF is for the catalyst not the "regen system". When the DPF accumulates enough particulates, a regen then occurs
Good stuff man. Thanks.
Anyone ever drove one with 2, 2 stroke Detroit Diesels? Those sounded amazing!
Have 3 of em sitting in the shop yard now.
Had bunch of fun on t-rex ts14-18 ... Detroit screamers😉
I first ran into the screaming Jimmie s in the late 50s uclid ts 24 headaches some fool thaught they would take the place of a push cat not
WHAT? You'll have speak a little LOUDER!
Green lizards lol
If the DPF burned the soot off at 2000 degrees Celsius you wouldn't have a machine left
Yeah don't quote me on the exact temperature I can't remember how hot exactly
I just googled it, it's around 1000°F
Great vid, he’s right about hauling ass . Those things can go 70 mph. Seen them scrape Rt 495 in the 60s
Try about half that fast...ran them for years
When are you posting the second part of this? About the inside of the cab.
Do your own. That guy is an idiot.
That tires worth more than everything I own.
Thank you for showing 50 year old + dirt moving procedures, Of course we didn't have cushioned stingers or black bails back then. But we had Terex twin 8v71's that could kick the sh*t out of "Cats..on the job.. And our trucks were clapped out N dirty..
Boy I have spent many summers running a 627 and 637 cat scrapper.
Is he high?
Ok I never knew the bail was operated from the cab. I always thought that the moment contact is made to the scraper in front the bail automatically lowered.
That would be freaky haha
Caterpillar orange 🤦♂️
Very informative video thanks for taking the time to make this. And everyone complaining about sound must be a grumpy old fuck because I can hear everything in video perfectly fine.
What no grease on bail arm or push pad what's going on ?
Beyond the name of parts that hold the most weight, what system ratchets up the center and locks it, so it dosen't drag, how does it work?
Where did you get this guy from?
Cat has a lot into the color. There proud of there paint.
Damn I didn know if they still made pans lol. I ran the older E model 621 and the old ass terex double barrels. Seems like most companies my way go w trucks n a ho or the pull pans w a D8 or 9 tractor pulling
What is bigger in the 657K compared with the 627K, is it only the bowl and two engines?
This guy knows his shit! super interesting.
cammy470 that’s a joke right
@@farmyardfab correct
I love your videos man, you’re obviously very knowledgeable on equipment operation and nomenclature. However I’ve always had to work on my own machine so I couldn’t get away with wearing a watching like that. Haha
Do these scrapers use Air Brakes? And if so are they the same as what a truck or bus would use?
can you make video about 657g scraper also thanks.
You know, Right.
Just remember. No using the bowl as a bathroom
LOL....
Ive shit in a few.
Not much toilet paper available
How much does it cost new?
Interesting video!
poor sound quality- hard to follow
I used to run this. Shit is beast
“You know”
Show de bola
We're going to el Cardenas in pittsburg
I've been wondering how guys get the opportunity to learn to run a scraper. Seems like a difficult thing to learn?
I started on a compactor watched and learned and then within a couple weeks they put me on a scraper just like this. Takes a couple hours to get the hang of but after a while you get comfortable. Helps to work with experienced guys to help teach you.
God i miss operating tje 631k all that power.
Yea we have 2 of these 627Ks in New Zealand, there all nice and fancy, bit our 2 627E's wip there ass, we have 2 627F's which are considered the dogs of our scraper fleet, we did a drag race up the Hual road last year between a K, F, and E.
Guess which one run, hmm.
The E series
627 s...are nice ..... 657 E :-) now that is so sweet....
It's not orange its Caterpillar yellow
Sound level is horrible I can barely hear anything you're saying definitely need to fix that in future videos
Where’s the video inside the cab showing how the controls work
Wait...you missed the pony motor...
Oh I left num 2 poison at Walgreens Brentwood ca
Why does he keep calling it orange? Is he color blind?
volume is lousy low
Ok I'm awake now I'm almost at el cardenos
I operate a 623k 🍻
Can't hear you
That wasn’t a tool box sir that is the battery box in the back
They looked a lot different from 657E model
New pans have brakes that work ?
Harold Renfro yep
Never have been on one with brakes lol
First one I was ever on was a S7 Euclid .......straight drive .....
You gotta a brake just drop your pan
No voice
In the day they were always refered to as a "double barrel pan"
DUSTY probably has an auto grease system
Double barrel Eucs (Euclids)
Some guys called them that others.twin stackers usually the front engine was stronger cat627 if you cocked the tractor when empty held the brake and stepped on the rear throttle it would raise one the front wheels off the ground. TS 14s couldn't do it not enough power in those little green weinies
Dude....
How much did you smoke before you made this video?
Lots I am Canadian
@@pushysix I have no comeback for that. Enjoy!
@@pushysix that is hilarious! A couple of good friends are also Canadian stoners. Keep up the good work!
@Donald Clark mapleweed though
@pushy6 your the real deal. If I was ever a big earth mover I would be gunning to have you run shit over here. STONED OR NOT!
Good job man. Who gives a fuck if you say orange or yellow. I can hear you just fine. Pretty cool you can start the rear engine from the cab.
Yah you are supposed to check fluid levels in the rear component any way before starting
I've ran one of the older ones 👍😏🇨🇦💯🚜
how this machines pays it self? how many years takes to be payed and start making money
Scrapers pay for themselves quick if it is in the right material. Push/pulls are money makers. If contractors were losing money on these thery would be gone by now.
I would hate to grease that at 4:30
Here we've got stuff, and uhh gears, and fuses and bits. It's air ride, but not air. This does stuff, uhh they use plastic because it won't cut tires, not because they're cheap... Are those skinny jeans?
Sixth Lord love to see those plastic guards after a few good muddy days, doubt they’d last 12 months
Uh.. that's yellow son.
That big shiny watch of yours must weigh 5 pounds.
Therefore I will subscribe to your channel.
This guy is clueless “ya know” 😂 get the person who designed it.
he's a colossal douche
I bet you both work at a women's clothing store stfu lol
JPD quick, its a virgin~ 25 minutes not an ounce of dirt moved, Jeff, get over there and straighten him out.
So basically they need to reinforce behind the hydraulic tank. And or move the lines.
But otherwise fairly sweet machine
Same with the fuel tank. It used to be well made then they went to plastics and Fibre glass
Não vão mandar a mercadoria
can you make educational video about other modela like 637k and 657g model of tractor scraper i would appreaciate.
It be about the same just bigger. The Gs have quite a few differences from the Ks
