I ran one of the cork screw scrapers as a test loaner from Caterpillar when the first came out I was running a 637 at the time, but Cat sent the Auger out to see how we liked them I liked it but was glad to get my 637 back

Cheers from Oshawa Canada. In the early '70s I'd skip school to go watch the old school Cat scrapers when they widened our 401 highway. ....no cabs......lucky to get a sun umbrella, which usually broke.....Dagmar Construction was the name, all painted orange.
Couple of things about 623's. They actually do have an ejection wall as well as the underneath one. They can also have teeth on the bottom of the bowl to help pick up material. Also, if you're picking up heavy clay, when unloading you can run the elevators in reverse to help break it up a bit. Also, at 3:10 I'd be really shitty if he was rocking around like that. Scrapers are already bouncy enough, no need to mess the pit up as well. Also another thing to mention (about all the scrapers) is the cushion hitch. When picking up you lower it, so the bowl is solidly connected to the cab. As you take off, you lift it up and it uses some sort of hydraulic magic to make the bowl 'cushioned'. I learned the hard way when I was first driving them. I forgot to take it off and my head hit the roof lol.
Actually the paddle type scrapers have both a ejector and sliding floor to unload. When you unload, the floor first opens to dump the load. Then when the cylinder retracts all the way a switching valve automatically switches the ejector cylinder to push the remaining dirt out of the bowl. Then it does everything in reverse to close the floor. I used to work for CAT. Also My boss has a 623b and 623e. I also seen videos of the auger style in gypsum mines. They have a little set of ripper mounted to the back similar to a moto grader so when they are loading they pre rip to loosen the gyp for the next pass. Everything else was good info. Great video👍👍
In Australia we call the 613,623,633 etc Elevating scrapers - haven't heard them called Paddle scrapers before but it is easy to understand why some people do. The first "elevator" scraper I saw was on a road job in the Northern Territory back in 1969. It was a Cat 623B. Later we got a Wabco B70 elevating scraper [possibly the only one ever sold in Aus]. Over 18 months it probably had about 50% down-time due to breakdowns but when it was sold off the new owners were achieving over 90% availability. Either we finally fixed it - or the new owners had better fitters than us!
We used to call them flappy paddles sometimes. We pretty much only used them in the desert. They're absolutely perfect for building roads and pads for mining rigs.

A small correction - the 623's floor does retract to dump the material but there is also a tailgate that comes ahead to finish dumping dirt in rear of scraper. The land leveling outfits I worked for had 623 Bs & Fs. They also had a 613 - my back hurts just thinking of running that stiff hitch machine!
Interesting. You don’t see many scrapers around here, mostly tractors with pans here. I’ve always wondered why some scrapers get pushed by dozers and others don’t. Guess I just figured it was because of the weight carrying the dirt they couldn’t move themselves which I guess is partially true.

Quick question about push-pulling scrapers - Since the second scraper gets a bigger load because of the additional tractive force from the heavier first scraper, do the scrapers ever alternate who pushes and who pulls to try and evenly spread wear among their push-pull team?
Only on flat ground does the front scraper get a little smaller load. Usually you want to set up your cut to have a down hill cut. That helps a lot on speed of loading and getting as much material Into the can as possible. We also rip the ground to loosen it up. You might hear guys call it making popcorn. Good scraper teams will both get the most material as possible without cutting into cycle times which should take 20-30 second on each machine to load.
I always thought the scraper with the elevator style pans was called a pan scraper. It's used for finish grade. Never heard of an auger scraper. Unless it's the one that mixes concrete powder in with the dirt and water to help with the compression test.
I've got a 615C they are still popular. When 613 is to small and 623 is to big. They stopped making it and the 633. I have seen a few 611. It's a 613 with open bowl. Army had some also.

@@cbmech2563. I’m sorry but you have no idea what your discussing. We own 2 615s and a 613B water wagon. 615 has about 90 more HP and 20,000 more lbs weight, they heap at 17 yds where 613 heaps at 11 and struck at 9. They are in a total different class. We run them almost daily.
Point is to manage a nice cut , depends on soil type so as that you need many hands in scrapers , sand , wet clay heavy dirt , your finish scrapers are monure wagons , get on a job with 100 scrapers see ya , black smoke
So, here's a question. Since, when operating as a push/pull set, the second scraper gets a bigger load because its helper unit has more traction due to the weight it is carrying, why can't they use that same principle to top off the lead unit too? It would be a simple matter for the lead scraper to take a second bite for a short distance after the second unit has been filled, since the second unit is now heavier and can push harder than it did at first. There's a lot of "we've always done it this way" thinking (actually, lack of thinking) going on so that operators are really stubborn about trying new things, but topping-of the lead unit before making the run to the fill site would increase efficiency quite a bit over the course of a full day. Am I missing something?
Also lost production time as well. Setting back in would cost company tons of money and destroy the cut as well. Imagine taking your car over speed bumps all day long. How fast would you drive though that mess. Simple answer is to create a down hill cut and both scrapers will load up completely
You forgot to mention the elevator types (ending in 3 or paddle wheel) only have one engine but can still load themselves without being pushed. In fact they usually can't be pushed as that overloads the elevator and causes it to stall.
The best thing of those scrapers that process kind of textured the material it had loaded they use those when finishing. When trying to load wet clay the elevator start jumping

Remember when engineers say that a machine can do something then a it is a perfect scenario and In the 20 plus years of doing this mass dirt work have never had the numbers back it up. Kewitt during the Vietnam era I heard from many sources was the largest dirt mover in the world. The job I was on in 1971 they moved 7.5 million yards of basalt rock. Drill it, shoot it, rip it and move it with 13 651b's and I was told that the sideboards brought it to 53 yards.
@@cbmech2563 well you were lied to. 651 with loose dirt will not get you close to 32cy yards. I had a lot of 51's working and there was never a day that a 51 or 57 ever got more than 34 or 35 cy in a load. Can't argue with you on the 70's about kiewit in the 70 but last few jobs I was on we moved 25 million cubic yards in each job. We had 57's , 51's b models and 660's all working together. Cat has put best case scenario and that would only be in a clay material. Not sure if your familiar with GPS but we checked our loads and they alway were in the 32 to 34 cy range heaped loads with sideboards. Kiewit these days only move dirt in coal mines and not as big when in comes to new construction.

You are so wrong on the auger, it runs only one way for both loading and unloading and the only way to reverse it is to get out and on top of the trans is a lever that you push to reverse. ( what fun in and out of cab when a rock jams it. also try reversing it with a full bowl and see what happens ) at first they had a switch inside until someone UNSCREWED there auger. They came out with a two speed motor on the 627 and is unkown if the 637 ended up with it. I ran them for many years when they first came out and helped improve them much as Empire machine company listened to me and others.

That is how you tear them in two. Push pulls should alway have two operators to safely operate the scapers and not idea to pair up multiple scapers together because of the stress it puts on the machines and only takes one guy to destroy multiple machines

Dont know where your working from but here is southern California where we move millions of yards on projects it is not acceptable to go into quads for loading out the cut. To many chances for failures to happen. Can it happen yes but to costly in the end to take a chance

You can say not true but I have seen it happen myself with good hands in the seat. It takes one hard spot or a operator make a mistake and equipment gets damaged or broke in half. That is a lot of stress on wear parts and gooseneck no including bales and aprons keep telling me not true. What kind of construction are you doing with your scrapers? The machines you are running are either very old or the own does not know it is being run in quads. All manufacturers would avoid the warranty immediately if they know that simply because the machine is not made to run in trips or quads. Please tell us where your doing this type of work

I've ran 37's and 27's in sand . . . . not recommended. That shit sucked. Unless you flood the hell out of it and/or have a dozer pushing behind the rear scraper, you aren't gonna get any traction and you're gonna bounce around like crazy.

I was an otr tireman could rotate the tires on a 651 in two hrs I could get 3 tires off the ground @ the same time and never use a jack

small question in terms of length is the 627 the same as the 637
627 hold less material and is much smaller in size and the same goes for 637 is a lot smaller then a 657
