Can These Shoes Be Saved? How To Re-Dye Leather Dress Shoes | Kirby Allison

- Can these shoes be saved? Kirby Allison takes a customer's shoes that have suffered from some serious scratches, scuffs, and marks, and sees if putting them through the Presidential Patina service can give these shoes a new lease of life.
Caleb puts the shoes through our brand-new Presidential Patina Service. The shoes are completely stripped down and restored using alcohol-based leather dyes. Starting off by removing all the present waxes with a heat gun to ensure that the dye will properly absorb into the leather. Next using the Saphir Decapant to strip down the color and finish of the shoes. Wait at least one hour or overnight to move on to the dyeing process. Once the shoes have dried, proceed with dyeing the shoes to the desired color using the base and main color dyes available at kirbyallison.com. After achieving the desired color with the leather dyes, let the shoes set overnight and proceed with a regular shoe care routine of Saphir Renovatuer, Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish, and a beautiful high shine achieved with Saphir Mirror Gloss, Pate de Luxe and a High Shine Chamois.
Stay tuned for the rest of the videos in our series on patina and leather dyeing coming soon.

Was not expecting those mega gloves
Am I the only one that wants to shake Kirby's hand?
The guy is single handedly keeping us gentlemen.
Hi Kirby, as always love the video. You may have already done this on your channel, but if not I was hoping you could do a video on your backstory and your origins. For example what you studied in college, how you became interested in classic menswear, the founding of the hanger project etc. Thank you so much!
i like the upbeat music that's being played in the video during the shoe restoration. nice little touch.
Great transformation - enjoyed watching and nice that the owner liked it!!
Love the colour you chose Kirby and Team - well done
such a wholesome interaction with the owner
8:06 Funky handshake!
that's the freemasons "secret" handshake
The lions handshake
That’s the Berluti handshake; takes some practice but once you learn it, it becomes second nature
Lovely!
I really enjoy your passion for the craft.
Nice video. I need the music to be a little more relaxing. I almost developed a heart condition, it was racing so fast.
Lego Master 23 you may also choose to “silence” the music.
Kevin, just make sure to take care of your shoes. Polish them regularly.
I don’t like instructional videos that don’t include verbal instructions. In this video, why did they apply heat to the shoe? How much heat should be applied? How hard would it have been to get the shoes down to natural leather?
To loosen up the oils and waxes already embedded in the leather. After that wiping away the too layer.
Secret Illuminati handshake revealed at 8:05.
Heywood Jablowme sure that wasn’t a tiger claw handshake lol
It's a freemasons hand shake. Not the same lol
I personally liked this different style of video
I loved this format Kirby!!
amazing! Kirby you are a master!
Beautiful color choice.
Great video Kirby!
Too dark for my liking, also I’m not sure if Kirby actually did the work.
Great job Kirbys stunt double!
It's usually Caleb
Danny T At one point the guy bent to grab something, and it wasn’t Kirby. But I don’t think that matters, does it?
@@golfbuddy1969 nah I guess not. just loved how Kirby was taking the credit whilst hiding the face of the do'er.
Danny T yes I understand. But he is “Kirby Allison” meaning, he is the company, and the company is him.
@@golfbuddy1969 Yea what evs, just an observation.
"can they be saved?" - with man it's impossible, but with God all things are possible
I’d be pretty annoyed if I bought a tan pair of shoes and they came back dark brown. Thought a patina with burgundy is my next favourite so it looks great
I just bought an eBay pair to restore for fun - one is noticeably faded compared to the other, as if it were left faded toe-forward in the sun for a year while the other was in shade. With fading like that, is it possible with cream polish alone to eventually bring it back to color, or do I have to use dyes?
Love your videos. I did something similar with a pair of ostrich skin luccheses. I'll share the results with you.
Any recommendations on how to keep a shoe the color they originally are? Would you been able to have stripped the leather, then redyed it to something to a similar color the way they started?
The best part of leather is watching it develop over time. It's a natural process. High quality leather shoes will develop a lovely patina over time. Trust the process.
The lions handshake
Hey, that's the guy from The Elegant Oxford!!!
Nah his voice is much deeper
Quite impressive.
It's so so... You should check out what the guy @patinaworksaz does... Amazing stuff
Great Video
Do younguys offer this service?
If not, any recommendations?
Is it possible to do the same with dark brown shoes? I love the new color
What about a top coat of Resolene? Is that not necessary to seal the dye?
I purchased two pairs of Allen Edmonds upon your recommendations of a starter brand to upgrade your wardrobe. One pair makes quite a bit of noise when walking, I do, now have shoe trees in my shoes to help prolong their longevity and decrease the creasing of the shoes. Do you have any suggestions to help work the shoes in, so they don't make so much noise, but not create a lot of creases that mar the overall appearance and second do you have any other suggestions to decrease the amount of creases the shoe holds on to with normal use?
Lester from GTA in the flesh. 💀💀💀 Mo!!!
Impressive
after sanding the sole edges, then what were the subsequent steps to achieve that dark wood look...
Caleb used the Dark Brown dye on the edges as well as Saphir Mirror Gloss to bring out the natural look of the leather.
@@kirbyallison is there a small bottle of this available if we want to use it just for sole edges? i only find the fiebing sole and edge dressing in small sizes...
@@shahtel It is the Saphir Teinture Francaise Dye in Dark Brown.

Things I noticed: Booze in the office! ; I could have skipped the first 2:00; I had to turn the music way down; I was sure he was gonna knock that can over; those are heat-proof gloves, not chemical-proof gloves, he should be wearing a mask (maybe he was?); picking up a pair of shoes from the shoe repair place is like signing for a re-fi on your mortgage. Nice shoes!
Did someone glue a rubber sole on the bottom of Allen Edmonds shoes?
Dear Kirby, should not you avoid heat on leather at all cost? Don't dry shoes next to a heater to prevent cracking?
The purpose of the heat gun was to remove any wax from the shoe for better dye absorption.
@@kirbyallison Thank you very much for the answer
Hello from portugal ! Love ypur videos ! I ve been hesitating between saphir teinture in bordeaux (the saphir cream is too purple, rather than the desired dark red and I fear the dye will be too) and base red wich might be too bright. Any help ? Best regards !
Know i know what the people look like that actually put those kind of laces on...
Sir i want to confirm one thing im having a pair of lodinG and they are light brown i want to change there colour which acelone and dye will be best for them
Please tell me❤🙏🏻
Sir please reply
I don't know what the agreement was but,, I would have kept it much lighter... Being an expert he probably understood that it would give it a slighly antique look if it remained light in color,, but I would have left that up to the owner.
* I actually try hard not to be critical... if I can I'll send this example I don't think it needs to be as extreme but similar to this color... Well it seems I can't download the picture but it popped up in the next video- before you touch the link it's the color of the picture shown[if I do this right😔] : ua-cam.com/video/Lzgc4JRwJrU/v-deo.html
Oh, Kirby,
You dandy rascal...
and what happenend to the sole?
Fine results. I was appreciating watching the restoration process, but you skipped such a crucial step between the oxblood dying and the end result. I was hoping to see your polishing method. I also had to mute it, because ukuleles, whistling, and xylophones were making my ears cringe.
glove overkill
Can black shoes be redyed?
Man I thought this was an episode of Carbonaro Effect
How much for that service? Those are nice! Didnt know you were in Dallas. I might just send you a pair
Hi Stephen, the service is $115.00. If you would like more information on the patina service, please email caleb@hangerproject.com.
Kirby Allison where in Dallas are you located? I saw in the video you had a D Magazine publication on the wall.
@@juliousbryant2022 Please email caleb@hangerproject.com for the address.
Wear gloves when applying the dye. It would stay in your skin for a while.
It really doesn't, surprisingly. I know it's not the best for your skin, but I'm usually using a rag with a bit of acetone to help blend the patina. That keeps any dye from staining my skin. Gloves are still an excellent idea, though.
@@iliketoflips I did mine and it stayed for a day. I also did the rag and acetone after dubbing the toes for patina. It blended well.
Yes, you should wear gloves, I think Caleb just forgot to bring them the day of filming ;)
Kirby Allison what brand of gloves are those?
A question for you Kirby, would there have been any way with the patina service to strip the shoe and re-dye them to a color closer to the walnut color they came in? I am as surprised as the owner that they came back that dark. I have some Walnut Allen Edmonds that can use a touch up, definitely know I wouldn't want them that dark.
2 years late and hope you got sorted out but any competent patina service should be able to do a colour match, especially with standard manufacturer colours.
Didn’t know you are a Freemason!
ThePom91 I had to go back and watch it twice to make sure I seen what I seen lol
Not supposed to do that handshake publicly
shoooooo
Thumbs up but I didn’t care for the music. It’s better when it’s just your voice talking with no music or a very light background music
if anyone knows: is the saphir decapant an even stronger version of renomat?
Essentially.
please, what did that coast?
The service is $115.00. If you would like more information about the patina service please email caleb@hangerproject.com.
Omg is that lester of grand thef auto?😲😂😂
What brand shoes were these?
They are Allen Edmonds.
Dude!
Believe it or not,, I actually try hard not to be critical... If I can I'll send this example... I don't think it needs to be as extreme but similar to this color... Poor acting, the both of yous.
:)
too many camera angles, it was nauseating to watch especially when sped up
