I think you've convinced me to give this a try. Bought a brand new car for the wife in late August, and I've already named it rockchip. 7+ chips in it, and the windshield has already been replaced once. Worst luck I've ever had.
A paint with metallics will be difficult to match because of the angle it is applied by the factory robots. A professional with a hand sprayer can't match the angle or exact spray pattern to duplicate the orange peel. They can get close, but the variables are too numerous to match perfectly. Don't expect miracles when filling chips. You can get close by layering and sanding between coats, but most run out of patience to develop the skills.
@ Yes, metallics don’t match well at all, especially silvers. You are right, the metal flakes don’t set the same as spraying. The issue I have with Dr Colorchip is the paint dries flat with no shine. One thing to note as well, some aftermarket paints require you to add clear coat over the top just like a factory application. I ended up up on my last Dr Colorchip application using clear, then leveling it. But to your point, solid colors match way better than many metallics as far as color.
Cool! Never thought of using a suede to level! 🤔
Thanks for this! I’m terrible at the pens and your method looked pretty doable! I’m going to check out those kits.

I find the paint in Dr Colorchip isn’t shiney anymore. The sealac solution makes it very flat. And it won’t polish with compound either.
