Matthew's Southern Comfort - Woodstock

  • Joni Mitchell wrote the song from what she had heard from then-boyfriend, Graham Nash, about the festival. She had not been there herself, since she had instead chosen to appear on The Tonight Show. She wrote this song crying at home watching the show on television.
    The song later went on to be hits for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Matthews' Southern Comfort, the latter reaching #1 on the UK singles chart for three weeks in October 1970. David Crosby in an interview said that Mitchell had captured the feeling and importance of the Woodstock festival better than anyone who had been there.
    Led Zeppelin incorporated Woodstock's lyrics and structure into live renditions of their song "Dazed and Confused" between 1973 and 1975.

      at THAT time, there has been Vietnam war - and yet half a million people of all colors have shown and proved to the WHOLE WORLD how to live in PEACE TOGETHER for 3 or 4 days, even in a very limited space!! they proved it CAN WORK! But now the fu**ing russian president terrorize europe with his PRIVATE war against Ukraine - why people NEVER learn, from world war II, korean war, vietnam war - WHY those INSANE leaders NEVER EVER learn that NOBODY will be a "winner" in any of those war's? except the defense industry?? Who shit into their brains (IF they have ANY) that those psychopaths never learn and understand how a peaceful life works (despite what Woodstock showed HOW it works) and that only peace brings mankind further and that there are far more important and significant things in life to be done than thousands of rockets and Millions of missiles to build?!?!?!

      I was too young (1969,i was born) but I am convinced I should of been born in time to appreciate the tunes, the life and the drugs.
      But we mustn't underestimate the music still being created by some superb writers and musicians, many people are not appreciative of the likes of shaun ryders creativity (happy Mondays, black grape)
      May not be everybody's taste, but his writing about today's issues is second to none.
      Stiff little fingers, new order, the jam, madness, Peter Gabriel, the list is endless. I haven't enough time left in my lifetime to work through all the music I would like to listen to, unfortunately, but I intend to give it a whirl.

    It seems that back then each rendition of this song was in a different melody and mood. When you think of Joni Mitchell's original version compared to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's rendition, they in themselves have very dissimilar melodies and moods. Now, this gem comes along in '71 and blows my socks off with the beautiful pedal steel guitar, vibraphone, and Ian Matthews' beautiful lead vocal. Its melody and mood are different again from the first two renditions. Amazing and so beautiful.

    The 1960's to early 1980's were a golden era in many ways, especially music. This song was the very essence of what made this such a memorable time to be alive. Compare Woodstock 1969 to the one held in 1999 which ironically was in my very back yard so I got to witness it first hand. Now take a look at how far we have fallen in the dreary 2020's.

      @Pragwo1f 9 місяців тому +2

      Agree with you completely on this being a golden era in musical terms. But as regards it being 'such a memorable time to be alive', this is well wide of the mark for many. Without Vietnam there would have been no flower power and no Woodstock. Then there was Watergate, the oil crisis, the Arab-Israeli War...and in my part of the world, normalisation and Charter 77. We live in grim times, but I do not remember the global picture being any less grim back then...

      Let’s make our own hope! We don’t have to give up! We got a vaccine for an unknown disease in less than a year and people came together to reject racism. We make our own world and if people don’t believe there is hope it is a self defeating prophecy

    Growing up as a good Mormon kid in the early 70's, this song (Matthew's Southern Comfort version - so dreamlike/ethereal....) was as close as I ever got to the "hippie" movement. I'm 67 now, and hearing this immediately takes me back to incense, beads, lava lamps and black light posters. What a great time to grow up! The music, fashions and excitement of the late 60's through the 80's will never come again, sadly....

      Many of you have proved you were not, exactly by what many of you often do. Not you personally here, but many of you often. By the act of claiming ego trip historical superlatives for yourselves and in contrast belittling and rubbishing everything after you, with a fervour that shows an active desire to tear apart other people's self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Those behaviours are, exactly, UNPEACEFUL !! and UNLOVING !! They are the destructive aggressive hurting behaviours exactly of historically normal bad hearts who have never solved the peace problem.

      Everyone is just marking time until the 100% inevitable next carrington event that's coming down the pike.
      And then... major bigtime EMP. After which there will soon be multi-hundreds of simultaneous meltdowns of all the assorted nuclear reactors and spent fuel pools.

    I turned an offer to drive a friends SS Camaro to Woodstock as a designated driver. I knew that the smoke that would fill the car would fail me a drug test for a job I applied for. But man those where the days I was dancing to the music all the time.. at 72 still dancing to that music .. :-) .. Love it !!!
