Hope you enjoy my conversation with Frank! It’s really amazing to hear stories from such an illustrious career...and that his proudest moment is when his son (my dear friend) beat him in a 10km.

Was 9 years old when first saw Frank win the 1972 Gold in Munich. My junior year in HS (1979) ran the MA state meet at Northfield Mount Hermon. During those years I trained in New England winter in a Frank Shorter warmup kit. Fast forward to the 1990's and Frank signed my Pre! book at a Boston Marathon expo and I actually got to run with him and Bill Rodgers (a true cool down) after we raced in Boston at the Alamo Rent-a Car Alumni road race event when Bill and Frank represented Wesleyan and Yale. What a thrill! Thank you for sharing this interview. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Long time Boulder trail and ultra runner now living retired in Sapporo, Japan. The Olympic Marathon will go right past my house in just a week from today. I still run but my body is so busted up I often have to take a lot of recovery time. I'm lucky I can still do it and have no problems with backcountry skiing, which is a big part of the reason I live here. I just stumbled across your series and saw Courtney and now Frank. Somehow in all my decades of living and running in Boulder I never crossed paths with him and sure wish I had after seeing this interview. What an awesome role model for me in every way. Thank you for this and thank you, Frank, for everything you do for running and for Boulder. You are a treasure in our communities.

What a great man! Many years ago he inspired me to get into running which I somehow passed on to my daughter who now lives in Golden. I think she was about 23 when she ran the Steamboat marathon and placed third in her age group. She is now about to run her first ultra at age 43. So Franks influence carries so much farther than he knows. Thanks for sharing with us. I had no idea he lived in Boulder. And thank you Frank for the inspiration!

Ryan, that was interesting and informative. I'm not a runner nor will I ever be, but in your usual style, you retained my attention span for the entirety of the video. That's nice that you caught up with Frank to thank him for giving you your inspirational running shoes.

This was great! Your running interviews (walking in this case lol) are my favorites of all our videos. Those adventure films are pretty good too, hah. I've never been much of a runner in my life and only recently discovered (as a baby boomer) how awesome it is, an activity so healthy both physically and mentally. Only in the last few years have I learned about the great runners and coaches who have made such positive influences in other people's lives. It really is a world of awesome discovery - at any age! Running is for all ages. Now what I have to do is get enough income to afford decent running shoes. Way too expensive, especially because they have to be replaced regularly!

Ryan, man what thrill, I mean thrill. I remember Frank Shorter, my hero way back in the day, and not many of us around that remember him in his running days, articles in Runner's World Mag. Anyway, he inspired me to run 10K's every weekend, until I pulled ligaments in my right ankle which ended my running with an ankle fusion, now I'm a bicycle person. OK, enough about me, just wanted you to know, to chat with Frank Shorter, you have arrived for sure, keep doing what your doing, enjoy you so much.

Ryan, thanks for bringing back memories! I worked at Runner's World 1977-85 and got to know many of the sport's standouts. Frank mentions Skip Hamilton. I ran the Fiesta Bowl Marathon with him in 1975 or so. Me, Skip and another runner took Coach Jerry Quiller's beat up van. Skip had a good race as I recall. He was just coming into his own as a runner. Frank should be given the gold for 1976. Totally agree with him on drug use abuse. Today the old Runner's World building is still standing, right next to Google HQ. And I see publisher Bob Anderson out running from time to time when I'm riding my bike. Great work.

I remember being the only one running on the road and if you saw anyone they were a member of a track club,.....but when Frank won the Olympic marathon, suddenly everyone was running, ...at 5 In the morning or 5 at nite,...even marathons had only about 100--500 people ,.....not long after he won the numbers went to 5,000--25,000.and today some are 50,000 with 2 million spectators (nyc)......I was glad to see Frank became a TV sports commentator at track and field events,....that was another first for the sport.

Awesome interview! I was a little girl living in my hometown of Philly, PA. but I remember watching Frank Shorter win the 1972 Olympic marathon! I also remember the confusion when an impostor got into the stadium ahead of Frank - I was so mad, my whole family was! We were all yelling at that guy on tv, trying to steal Frank's thunder! Thank goodness he was caught and thrown out before Frank ran across the tape! I also remember the Munich massacres. I remember feeling scared and confused. It was such a joyful time and then these terrorists murdered the Israeli athletes and coaches. I remember seeing the legendary Jesse Owens sobbing into his handkerchief during the memorial service. Jesse had raced and won at the Nazi Olympics in 1936. To think that he lived to see his beloved Olympics bespoiled in such a horrific way. 😢💔And for Frank to live through that too, and then yet another terrorist act at the Boston marathon. 🥺💔 Frank is an Olympic legend! The 1972 Olympics are my first memory of the Summer Games (Sapporo are my first Winter Games memory!). Frank Shorter, Olga Korbut, Mark Spitz - they are all still my Olympic heroes! ❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

THE NARRATOR OF THIS VIDEO IS WRONG WHEN HE STATES THAT FRANK SHORTER IS "THE ONLY AMERICAN MAN TO EVER WIN GOLD MEDAL IN OLYMPIC MARATHON" Not so. Long before Frank won the Munich Marathon in 1972--a race I saw in person on September 10, 1972 in Munich--way back in 1904 Olympics Tommy Hicks,USA won marathon gold in Saint Louis (first Olympics ever held in USA) Also four years later in London 1908--Johnny Hayes USA won the marathon--first time the marathon race was exactly 26.2 miles--and has been ever since. Granted those two times were a long time before 1972--but the Modern Olympic Games began in 1896--so those were official Olympics back then. You would think the narrator would have checked this, it can't be that hard to do--especially in the computer age we live in. Still this is a nice video--it really is--but I just think in all fairness this error should be noted. By the way--I am one of a very few people to ever teach a course--and give lectures on Olympic Games history. In Baltimore I taught an Olympics history course at Johns Hopkins University and lectures at a local library. Three times in my life I met Frank Shorter--twice at the Montreal Olympics in 1976--and in 1980 here in Baltimore--he autographed his book for me--which I appreciated very much.

Wow, that was fantastic! I’ve been waiting for this one! We got our first TV for the ‘72 Olympics when I was 11 so that dark event was my introduction to television.
    Still don’t like it much...
BTW, my girlfriend lives on the Fortitude course near City Park in Fort Collins. I think I heard Frank Shorter lived there for a time. I’m curious where.

You stated incorrectly that Frank was the only American male to win the gold medal in the Olympic Marathon. Johnny Hayes of the US won the gold at the 1908 London games.

you could buy a drone that follows you for those types of interveiws, just to mix it up a bit in editing. also a microphone attached to you and the subject that you can record to a dictaphone for editing later. good show, in my recommended for a reason

Drones make too much noise, and would drown out the audio on the conversations. Thanks for watching!

Slight historical correction. Johnny Hayes of the USA won the gold medal in the marathon in the 1908 Olympics. Dorando Pietri crossed the line first but was DQd because officials had materially aided him in the stadium. That doesn't detract from Frank's achievements. He should have gotten the gold in 1976 because Cierpinski of the DDR undoubtedly used PEDs and wasn't caught.

Regarding the outlawing of certain running shoes, there’s two sports that had to deal with that and they chose opposite ways. MLB outlaws aluminum or titanium bats and is better off than Tennis, which allows EVERY Racquet known to man to be used. MLB a did It RIGHT!!
