Three great things happening here. 1) Onyx knew he needed help and wasn’t too proud to ask for it. 2) there was a teaching moment in the cab between father and son. 3) Nate has a keen instinct for finding the positives in every situation. Y’all have such great attitudes and work together so well. It’s a treat to see.
I gotta say watching the boy learn the ropes really takes me back to being a kid . Grandpa saying I'm glad he stops before he gets in to deep . I swear I heard the same thing from my Grandpa. Very nostalgic for me and I'm sure sooooo many others .
As for number one son, never be ashamed to ask a question, or advice, because he was good, to have stop, ask for help, and not make it worse, and he also learned alot, good lad 🤓
Well done Onyx for knowing your current "limit" and getting Dad to advise. Next time you'll know. That's the sign of an operator who will be very good, and is already better than some "experienced" ones!! 😉😇
Onyx illustrates the difference between someone who can "dive" a tractor vs. someone who is an operator. He uses common sense and intelligence to know when to stop and to recognize the importance of not abusing the equipment. Zach shows patience by fully explaining the situation so the lessons from the school of hard knocks are understood. I enjoy farming videos, The Millennial Farmer is the best of all of them because of the family dynamic. I have so much respect and admiration for the Johnson family, can't get enough of their videos.
He's asking questions and trying to push his abilities a bit, but not too far. As long as he doesn't get discouraged, he'll catch on quickly and continue to advance his skills. Fun watching kids learn.
Great job, Onyx! You know when to ask for help. You'll be stuck many more times. It's part of farming, but you know how to handle things like a pro. Stay safe, and God bless.
KUDOS to Onyx! Smart move Onyx - you have learned well and applying what you have learned. I know your Dad and Grandpa are proud of the way you handled that situation. Not many young men your age are capable of thinking things through like you did. Keep up the good work young man!
Awesome video Zack. I saw a guy drive all day,, a trippy farmer,,, before he figured he could use his windshield wipers to wipe dust off the windows. I use mine more for dust than rain. Keep up the great work mate from New Zealand.
Props to Onyx for not going further! And props to you for not losing your temper! When I got the zero turn stuck, my dad lost it with me. You have a much better demeanor. You are raising a fine young man!
From 5:00 to 8:00 is just lovely. The way he listened to you and his whole attitude to the situation and both yours and your Dads comments in regards to how he reacted gave me goosebumps. The trust and respect you both have for him are something he wont realise right now will make him into a fine person for the rest of his life and he is an absolute credit to you and his grandfather.
Had a similar situation myself a few years ago on one of our farms. I stopped before I got to a point of being stuck and called my uncle who, much like Zach, came across the field in the planter tractor to coach me across the mud. As he said "I wish all my operators [my dad and other uncles and a cousin] would take the few minutes to stop and call before a problem rather after the fact and cost life, limb, and large amounts of cash". All of this is to say, Onyx did a great job (especially given his young age) by stopping and calling you.
I’m not a farmer nor have I ever driven a tractor before but after watching this video I’d say Onyx was taught by a professional. I still enjoy watching Jim test the yankum ropes every once in awhile
We all learned at an early age to lift asap when in wet ground. It only takes one call to Dad to learn not to stop and change plans.. Zack I was most impressed how you handled the situation. Calm and respectful... no yelling
You should be very proud of Onyx for recognizing his limitations! I’m really amazed that you can be planting when Larsons still have snow melt and water standing!!
Awesome Onyx knew when to stop and want help. Credit to Dad and Grampa for teaching good. Love to see all three of you out working the fields. I didnt get to meet my Grandpa, but Onyx will have great memoies for later in life working with with Dad and Granpa.
Some might think that you are a spoiled beneficiary of your ancestors work, but I see and enjoy the effort you and your family puts in. Onyx reminds me of my son who is now 26 yrs old and has worked hard in our business and has taken over most of the load. We’re carpenters but I really enjoy the farming end of things, when I grow up I want to be a farmer.
Well done Onyx for knowing when to call for help and well done Zach for reinforcing a good decision he made also granddad sounded very proud at the decision as well. Such a great learning experience for all!
🚜🆘🤝 Onyx's humble recognition of his limitations and seeking assistance shows great wisdom and maturity as an operator. It's crucial to prioritize safety and reach out for help when facing challenges. It's a valuable lesson for everyone, reminding us that it's okay to ask for support and collaborate to overcome obstacles. Kudos to Onyx for his responsible approach! 🚜🆘🤝
This was an outstanding video. It's good to see men who know what they're doing doing so. And it is especially neat to see you three guys working together. Who knows what will happen in the future, but you and your dad must feel like the young guy walking in your footsteps will be able to get the job done when his time comes.
Smart move Onyx!! It would have been very costly if you had broken something. Not something you see now days, a young man with Common Sense. ❤❤ Keep up the good work Onyx!!!
Gosh it seems to be a pain in the backside doing the test plots. But it is for a good cause. Thanks for the video I learn something new every time I watch you videos.
It’s interesting that you check the little details like the tread pattern in the field to detect problems. Not uncommon in our line of work either. And sorry Onyx got stuck but it happens.
It’s been a while since I watched one of your videos. I used to watch them on a regular basis. I’m so glad I watched this one. It was truly a beautiful video and brought back memories of all the ones that I used to watch. I think I’ll start watching them again….l
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Thanks for the time you and your dad give to help with this test plot project. Nice that students end of with scholarships. Thanks again for donating your time and effort. Really proud of Onyx for stopping the tractor and tillage machine and asking for help to prevent getting stuck. Reminds me of when I was young. He did the right thing. Nothing wrong with asking for help to prevent a stuck tractor. Nice going Onyx!!!!!! Proud of you!!!!!!! Will watch your car racing channel. Not only for your car but even more so for Onyx getting behind the wheel this year. Bet he will do alright. Thanks. Planting is a busy busy time. Planters need a lot of attention and adjustments. Just the way it goes. You are doing pretty darn good so far. No huge breakdowns anyway. Keep at it Zach and Dad and Onyx. Have not seen much of Jim. Good continued luck with getting the seed in the ground. Corn about done and going to soybeans. Great going Zach. You all take care and be safe. Thanks for everything to all of you. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.
No truer word can be spoken. If you are UNSURE ask for help. There is no shame in have some help. If more people young and old would understand that! BRAVO Onyx!
It's great Onyx knew not to keep digging. It's a sign of strength and wisdom to know you need help and to be humble enough to ask for it. The test plot takes longer for sure. But, you're not just growing corn, you're planting seeds for education. I love that it's a project you and your dad could work on together with your eyes fixed well beyond harvest time. God bless all the MF Family. Peace
Definitely Minnesota Nice…. Lived in Minneapolis, in a highrise right alongside the Mississippi River locks and the stone arch bridge, then bought home on a small lake in Lino Lakes Mn. Enjoyed our 3yrs in MN.
Kudos Onyx!!!!!!!! Outstanding job on making the call that you did by stopping and calling in help. Without a doubt you are on your way on becoming a expert operator. . Keep up the great job
You have Raised a Smart Son to know when to call for help. Listening to Younand your Dad converse about it after you got him out was cool. Onyx is getting quite the upgrade in gocarts 😁
Really good of you guys doing the test plot's for Scholarships. A very busy time for the farm, but you made time to do it. Super Job !!. Can't wait for race season, it's almost here. 🙂
A few years back I did some seasonal work for an actor like you, I did the planting but with machines a bit smaller than you use. The actor's 16-year-old (cocky) son was also helping out with tillage, just like Onyx is. I was able to see him turn and the end of his field every 15 - 20 minutes or so. On my second to last day, I noticed I hadn't seen him for some time, so I called him on the radio to check if all was good. He replied "yeah all good, zero problems here..." About an hour later, he called on the radio and said that he "might be stuck, but a quick pull with a rope would probably be enough..." The actor asked me to go and see since I was closest by, and so I did. His "I might be stuck" was actually stuck, as in, stuck stuck.... more than half of the rear tires were sunk into the soil, about half the front tires were as well... He managed to get both the axles buried as well. It had bottomed out from front to back, just over an hour ago, he said. (before I called to check on him, actually.) Refused to admit defeat and continued wiggling the tractor and digger. We needed a total of 5 other tractors and crazy lengths of chain/rope to get it out the next day. In total, we spend just over 15 hours to get him out and more hours to get the digger free from the earth. The actor was not too very happy after that, and when he noticed the tractor was showing several warning codes, he got even more angry. The kid had managed to damage pretty much the entire drivetrain. (full revs with diffs locked in the highest gear, steering from left to right and flipping from forward to reverse and back whilst flooring the tractor) I don't know how much the repair was, but it was not cheap for sure. You should be extremely proud of Onyx and how he handles situations he is unsure of. You have raised and taught him very well if you ask me!
Reminds me of when my Dad's employee sunk a tractor into a bog up to the axles. This was next to a pretty popular road, so there were bets in the area on how long it would take to get it out. It took a couple of weeks of noodling, but Dad parked our backhoe behind the tractor, angled the bucket into the ground so it would dig in as a giant anchor, then attached the bucket to the axles with cable. He then put the tractor in reverse gear and wrapped that cable around the axles like a winch until it had pulled itself free. No significant damage!
Onyx has grown so much, he's a smart kid whose going to be running the show a few years. Can't wait to see him and his sister in the fields working together this year.
the fact that onyx knew that he was out of his League and to ask for help is definitely the sign of a good operator.
You obviously new here that kid is very impressive. You should see the decisions he makes on the track 🤯🤯🤯
Great job Onyx knowing when to ask for help is the best thing you can learn when you are learning anything.
Great job.💪 You learn where not to go by going there.

Agreed
We need more Jim content. We wait all winter for Jim. It’s spring, Bring Jim content
Jim Jim Jim Jim Jim Jim Jim.
Jim taking lessons from Onyx 😂😂
@@ashleywynn4923 just the opposite. Onyx learning from Jim!
I heard Jim had some surgery, so he may not of been healed up yet.
Jim had a minor surgery and has been sore, so he took the first week off!
"Eight cheeseburgs and a slice of pizza." 😅 Onyx has your sense of humor. You raised him right.
Zach's Dad/(Mom), Zach/Becky and Onyx ❤ 😊is great thing happening here....
You handled Onyx's situation well, calmly with, 'this is what you did and this is what you have to do.' Good job
Exactly. It is easy to get upset, especially in the middle of seeding, but patience will always pay off in the end.
6:44 ATTA BOY ONYX!!!!! That's such a good attitude after something like that happens. Awesome to see!
Zach, I love how good it is to see Onyx, your dad and you all working together to get the corn in the ground. Blessings to you all...
It’s really nice to see a planter work with zero issues, Good luck with your harvest
Id love to know you better Bill, thats only if you dont mind cos you seems to be a nice and very cool person
Great job Onyx! Smart kid, great decision calling someone when not sure, your dad and grandma are lucky to have you.
Sign of a good farmer
It’s really nice to see a planter work with zero issues, Good luck with your harvest
Id love to know you better Derek, thats only if you dont mind cos you seems to be a nice and very cool person
I am impressed by your son’s rapid learning, and also recognition of when he does not know how to do something.
Onyx is a wise young man and knows his limitations and is not to proud to ask for help. You and Becky have done a great job with your children.
Good job Onyx!!! and good job Dad teaching Onyx to not make situation worse.
I gotta say watching the boy learn the ropes really takes me back to being a kid . Grandpa saying I'm glad he stops before he gets in to deep . I swear I heard the same thing from my Grandpa. Very nostalgic for me and I'm sure sooooo many others .
Amen
Another great video, Onyx is a very responsible operator, not getting in over his head. Glad the planting season is going well.
That was awful smart of Onyx to stop and ask for help before he got in too deep. You’ve taught him well!
Zach, you are raising a responsible man! When I was his age I would’ve tried to get out on my own before calling for help… just making it worse!!
Onyx illustrates the difference between someone who can "dive" a tractor vs. someone who is an operator. He uses common sense and intelligence to know when to stop and to recognize the importance of not abusing the equipment. I enjoy farming videos, The Millennial Farmer is the best of all of them because of the family dynamic. I have so much respect and admiration for the Johnson family, can't get enough of their videos.
Man... My dad would've yelled at me so hard for getting stuck like that. You're so awesome for being relaxed and not giving him hell about it. ❤
He's asking questions and trying to push his abilities a bit, but not too far. As long as he doesn't get discouraged, he'll catch on quickly and continue to advance his skills. Fun watching kids learn.
My eighty-year-old mother really loves your dad whenever something happens he never gets excited there is always another day
three generations of farmers in the truck. What an awesome time for you
Great job Onyx! He did a great job recognizing the situation and Zach responded perfectly.
Great job, Onyx! You know when to ask for help. You'll be stuck many more times. It's part of farming, but you know how to handle things like a pro. Stay safe, and God bless.
Also props on his dad for staying chill about it and using it as a further learning experience for him.
Another good day getting to tag along in Zach’s day .. Love the videos
KUDOS to Onyx! Smart move Onyx - you have learned well and applying what you have learned. I know your Dad and Grandpa are proud of the way you handled that situation. Not many young men your age are capable of thinking things through like you did. Keep up the good work young man!
Awesome job Onyx. You made the right choice. A few years ago, poor Jim almost got fired for lost his job for getting the JD stuck. Poor Jim.
Should have told Zach to pound his ego up his a$$ and enjoyed his retirement!
Awesome video Zack. I saw a guy drive all day,, a trippy farmer,,, before he figured he could use his windshield wipers to wipe dust off the windows. I use mine more for dust than rain. Keep up the great work mate from New Zealand.
Onyx has been doing so well that I'm waitin' for him to take the channel over. Great vid, Zack. God bless the family.
Props to Onyx for not going further! And props to you for not losing your temper! When I got the zero turn stuck, my dad lost it with me. You have a much better demeanor. You are raising a fine young man!

Q&A with you and your dad would be great.
Love watching the three of you. Your dad reminds me of my Dad.
You should be very proud of Onyx for recognizing his limitations! I’m really amazed that you can be planting when Larsons still have snow melt and water standing!!
You are a good father Zach. Calmly handling stucks, racing and building cars for your son. A good life for you and your family.
Awesome Onyx knew when to stop and want help. Credit to Dad and Grampa for teaching good. Love to see all three of you out working the fields. I didnt get to meet my Grandpa, but Onyx will have great memoies for later in life working with with Dad and Granpa.
You can't beat being that far north for the long daylight days of spring and summer. We are 54 degrees north. Great video. All the best 🇬🇧.
good job Onyx knowing when to stop. and Good Job Zack for making it a teachable moment.
Some might think that you are a spoiled beneficiary of your ancestors work, but I see and enjoy the effort you and your family puts in. Onyx knew his limitations that's a smart young man that's when you remind him you learn something new everyday
Must be amazingly satisfying to reach end on corn planting and look forward to beans! Sharing with 1 million viewers is awesome too. Congrats!

Love all the videos. Onyx is learning glad he is included.
Your sone is growing into an awesome little man. I love how he does the work but you make sure he has time go to play. Great job raising those kiddos
He's learning, and asking good questions.
Its awesome Zach to see all 3 of you working together!!
Can definitely hear the love from dad and grandpa
Almost as relieved to see planter work as you guys must be.
Zach, Thanks for sharing, great seeing two Dads and two Sons, making it happen. Peter - Melbourne Australia
you guys are amazing, love y'all
Well done Onyx!! ... stopped rather than digging it in AND then asking for help ..👍👍
You did a good job learning onyx how to handle the tractor in these conditions! You learn the best by getting stuck yourself.
I actually laughed out loud when you got to the truck and the doors were locked, every time! Lol.
Awesome job down by your son calling for help. Love the way you taught him!
Love to see the kids involved have a good one buddy
Gosh it seems to be a pain in the backside doing the test plots. But it is for a good cause. Thanks for the video I learn something new every time I watch you videos.
It’s interesting that you check the little details like the tread pattern in the field to detect problems. Not uncommon in our line of work either. And sorry Onyx got stuck but it happens.
Congratulations onyx!! I’m so excited to see you racing that beast of a car!!❤️❤️🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😎😎😎😎
Wow, what a unique turn of events. Just this evening I got stuck while discing😂
I can see why most city jobs are much easy-er! Zach, thanks for informing the public.
It’s been a while since I watched one of your videos. I used to watch them on a regular basis. I’m so glad I watched this one. It was truly a beautiful video and brought back memories of all the ones that I used to watch. I think I’ll start watching them again….l
Heck yeah! Welcome back!
im proud of onyx for learning from his dad on how to get things stuck
Onyx is a good farm hand. Calls when he's not sure and then asks if he made a mistake. What a great kid!
Thanks.

Good continued luck with getting the seed in the ground. Corn about done and going to soybeans. Great going Zach.
You all take care and be safe. Thanks for everything to all of you.

Love this time of year and seeing the big iron putting seed in the ground. Well done Onyx!

You are a Great TEACHER ZACH ! Love you BROTHER ❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💯💯💯
Aw man, those are two awesome hot rods. I like them. Good luck to you, Zack and Onyx
You have Raised a Smart Son to know when to call for help. Listening to Younand your Dad converse about it after you got him out was cool. Onyx is getting quite the upgrade in gocarts 😁
"Eight cheeseburgers and a slice of pizza." lol... Onyx definitely has his dads sense of humor.
You should do a live feed camras on the tractors
I own a Polaris Sportsman ATV, with 22,112 miles. I bought it in 2019 December
Love that Onyx is getting into a modified this season! Can’t wait to follow along!

A Big thumb 's up ☝☝ to onyx.. The boy is learning and it takes a BIG man to ask for help..
Really good of you guys doing the test plot's for Scholarships. A very busy time for the farm, but you made time to do it. Super Job !!. Can't wait for race season, it's almost here. 🙂

Good job on the teacher and learner on that one. Those are time to learn and not get mad or frustrated

A few years back I did some seasonal work for an actor like you, I did the planting but with machines a bit smaller than you use. About an hour later, he called on the radio and said that he "might be stuck, but a quick pull with a rope would probably be enough..."
The actor asked me to go and see since I was closest by, and so I did.
His "I might be stuck" was actually stuck, as in, stuck stuck.... more than half of the rear tires were sunk into the soil, about half the front tires were as well... He managed to get both the axles buried as well. It had bottomed out from front to back, just over an hour ago, he said. (before I called to check on him, actually.) (full revs with diffs locked in the highest gear, steering from left to right and flipping from forward to reverse and back whilst flooring the tractor) I don't know how much the repair was, but it was not cheap for sure.
WAY TO GO ONYX!!! Stopped in time and learned. Great job!
Props to the young fella asking for help and owning a mistake!
I love this channel onyx is my favorite he is just so responsible for his age and he knew it was out of his league and he asked for help
I'm excited for Onyx! Can't wait to see him in it!~
you did great handling your lil man!
Is the ditch onxy was in the same one Jim became famous in? At least he stopped and asked for help before he wrecked something.
