When I want an unbiased once over of something, you're an obvious goto. Thanks for demoing this. I was looking at it and thinking if I should add it to my collection, and a combo Jupiter8 and DS50 sounds like a pretty good combo. I definitely see some Jupiter 8 influence on the controls of the synth. And having a built-in string synth as well. Beautiful. Quite a fan of Cherry Audio's synths. Have a number of them.
I already have their Synthex plugin which is excellent and you have to say Cherry really are producing fantastic products at ridiculous prices. A 'DREAMDRUMS' synth would be an absolute winner if done by 🍒 😎
I downloaded this and played around with it for about an hour last night. What I discovered is that it can be made to sound 100% better by turning off the reverb.
Nice one. You're right - it's good that it doesn't pretend to be anything exactly, because as you say this would have blown our minds back then ... the breadth of sounds is quite staggering if not exactly a match for any individual piece of original gear. I'm tempted by this even if, having just bought the GForce OB-E, it doesn't seem to have half the heft of that thing ... but it goes way further. Great review as always ... amazed that you can get your head around all these interfaces so quickly 👍. Superstar review ☺👌
2:49 Sixteen oscillators multiplied by 6 is actually a whopping 96 oscillators! What a beautiful sounding synth! Subbed for the great content. Keep it up!
Nice! I’d say they’ve nailed a winner with this one. I particularly liked the sound of the notch filter… I’ll be picking this up for sure. Cheers man, peace ✌️
Great video! Love the sound of this. Definitely does the "icy" side of things very well. Nice to hear something that doesn't go all in for the "warm" squishy sound that's everywhere.
First off, it is an awesome sounding synth. Cherry audio makes some incredible plugins for sure. For me personally, I was close to hitting the buy button, but then I started to compare this with my Hydrasynth. Even though they are very much two different synths, the stuff that matters (the sound coming out) is just so similar. I applaud Cherry Audio for making a synth of this caliber and for so cheap, but in the end I had fight the GAS and be happy with what I have in front of me. Awesome video as always!
Oh yes. Same here. I was wondering where the pro 800 went as I’ve been waiting so long. But now the 16!!??? Until a real Dave synth, I’m one excited old man. :))) ffffffuuug yes bro. You and I both. Man what a great offering per Behringer.
I'm not a huge fan of plugins cause I just don't seem to connect with them as well as hardware, but I might have to get this plugin. It sounds absolutely beautiful.
Makes me feel like I did when I got a D-50 back in the 80's. Lovely. This appears to be totally complete within itself. Where's the output jack? Can this be include in the CA modular system?
The Cherry Audio softsynths are magical and the eight voice is a dream to play about with (kinda Oberheimish). Truth is there are plenty of really good inexpensive plugin synths out there you do not have to waste your money on those who claim to be market leaders and can cost you a arm and a leg !! Superwave also do some awesome plugins especially if your a Jarre nut and there also super cheap !!
I agree that there are a lot of very nice, inexpensive synths out there (even some free ones are pretty great), but I definitely do not regret dropping a lot more money on great softsynths like Repro, Diva, Bazille, Hive, ACE and Pigments. They're still my go-to synths even though I grab much cheaper things like DCO-106 pretty often too. Still learning Sines, but already liking it quite a bit.
@ghost mall That does sound like a good solution. I don't have a System 8 but might try with one of my other synths, I'm sure all that assigning becomes quite zen once you get going
While this is an original design, it drew inspiration from the early digital synthesizers, specifically the Ensoniq ESQ-1, the Kawai K series and the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS. Definitely not taking anything away from it =]
I think they could improve a bit by distinguishing the clusters of 'modules' (LFO, OSC, filter) a bit better graphically. Visually it's too overwhelming. Looks more like an airliner cockpit (flight simulator). I'd expect the flight attendant to tap my shoulder and present me a cup of coffee any minute. ;-)
I think I like The fact it’s not based on a hardware design as well. When they copy a hardware panel in software the workflow doesn’t seam to translate. I love the sound of Jupiter but don’t enjoy it’s panel in software format. This feels like they nailed the workflow and the GUI is enjoyable to use!
The interface is making me squint. The only thing I don't like about their synths is the bottom end is lacking when the rez is up and the lo pass is down, as you demonstrated in your Mercury 4 vs promars video. Need that sub!
If my memory serves me correctly I remember a pre-VST soft synth that looked just like this DreamSynth from back in the late 90s way before software instruments were actually any good. Its actually bugging me now so I am off to do a little internet detective work and hopefully be back with answers. [EDIT] OK, after a little research I believe it was called "DreamStation" which is a VA DXi synth from around 1998, this is the synth that immediately sprung to my mind upon first seeing this DreamSynth. Is it a coincidence that both of these synths have the word Dream in their names and kinda look alike? Or is there something to it that Cherry Audio seem to have avoided mentioning?
Great synth.. But I have so many synths that can do all that this vst does, just in a different way, approach etc.. But for £30!🤔 LOL what's another plug in? I do like the pcm/anasynth crossover though.
I used to have a Jupiter 8 back in the 80's and I always saw the myriads of knobs, switches and faders as exciting opportunities to disappear down sonic alleyways that could lead anywhere. You can use your brain to play with this synth or alternatively just use your ears and your imagination. Really exciting. 😎
Where's my 'soundtrack' preset? Honestly, it's pretty impressive and the price is ridiculous! Alternativley, pay Roland a monthly fee to rent an authentic D50 emulation, with all the interface awkwardness? No thanks!
It sounds good no doubt, but I wish there was some type of USB box that could interface with VST plugins, convert the digital signals in real time to analogue including a VCA circuit and then back into your DAW with zero latency. Kind of like a R2R DA/AD with VCA to somehow beef up the sound. I know my explanation is far from perfect, but you know what I mean.
For such a deep synth the layout and the fact every important function is right in front of you makes you fully understand synthesis. Also it encourages you to create your own presets. But i'm a big fan of hardware, nothing beats grabbing knobs, sliders and buttons to interact with a synth. One of the aspects that makes vst's fail for me is when you turn the cutoff and resonance, compared to most hardware there's a sweet spot when the sound produced starts to come alive or do crazy things most software can't replicate it and it happens more on pure analogue synths that don't have digital control or presets. But at the end of the day hundreds of hit records are made on computers using vst's then sent to studio's where they run the whole track or the stems of the track through hardware eq's compressors, transformers and god knows what and by the time it's mastered no one would have a clue or care if vst's were used.
EDIT: I bought this synth last night as it's on sale, and I will eat my words. I really like it, and with its large selection of waves and OSC types, it really gives you a wide sonic pallete. I was wrong. Original comment: I love their stuff, but not a big fan of this. It's way too cramped, and I think they should have way more mod sources, especially calling it a "dream synth". Maybe an MSEG or two? Also, a sequencer would've been nice. Anyway, I'll be passing on this one, but wish them many sales as I dig their business model.
Fully, MSEG's with positive and negative adjustable key-track independent for every of the 6 Oscillators, with loops switchable between the stages. Then it would be a dream machine.
That GUI Design makes my eyes hurt. Who designed this? There is no weight, no priorites, no visual gudiance. It's all just screaming at you. This GUI is the equivalent of a old Modem dail sound
The biggest problem with all VST instruments is that they just have that dreaded "VST" sound, no body or real 3 dimensional presence. Even hardware Virtual Analogue or digital synths sound so much better imo just based on the fact that they have actual voltages and amplifier circuits going to the outputs.
@@newking70 It's not about the difference. It's about the kind of sound you're after, and most soft synths can't match hardware synths in regards to the things mentioned above.
I totally disagree. Soft synths today play like hardware, or even better. What is missing is obviously the real time control of your hands manipulating everywhere. This cannot be simulated, and it is a lot of fun and efficiency if you are into sound design. But if you play live (like myself) sound quality is not an issue. Yes, I own some hardware synth. Yes, I made some comparison
I like the Moog and Arp 2600 for basses, but all of these synths sound very pedestrian and characterless once they get into the mids to highs. I find them really uninspiring in the top end. I don't feel that way about Sylenth however. You're getting what you pay for with these, which is forgettable.

I can’t remember off hand… but think so. It’ll be called portamento, ports or glide
I dunno how much it would sound like a 303 (you have more control via midi in your DAW), but it has Glide over on the left of the interface.

DWGS waveforms were single cycle, so static over time, where PCM samples typically change over time.
