Sam. This is informative and sad at the same time. I test drove the Volvo and Polstar fine vehicles. The prices are too high compared to Tesla. I even went to see the Polstar 3 today and it was amazing but at $60000-$90000 I am not sure how many ordinary people can afford that.
I'm privileged to be able to afford all these ......i like them .....but ... no way I'm paying as much when i could get a tesla for substantially cheaper plus SC network
I'm leasing an XC40, car is the 2024 model due in Oct in the UK. With the leasing, due to how they value the car after my lease, meant the all wheel drive wasn't very much more expensive. O-60 4.9s and far better interior than the Polestar and i like a SUV ride position (I have a Landrover Freelander 2). The range improvement is why i reconsidered this car .. Tesla lease was more expensive and I don't know if i want to give my money to Elon Musk. Kia Hyundai where on a 54wk Leadtime, GV60 price increased a lot, the Volvo 30wk lead and leasing price was cheaper so hence i did this
Wondered how long it would take. Previous price was scary for me, now its just plain out there. Why? Because I don’t live in China. EV prices are coming down though, apparently. I just think Oz buyers are missing out for some reason. When you add the squeeze to make the change via regulation, the rest is history.
Here in Brazil, Volvo is actually quite aggressive. At BRL330K base price (USD66K), the XC40 isn't exactly cheap, BUT that is the same price GM asks for the Bolt here and Toyota for the RAV4. And they are building themselves their recharging infrastructure, which helps a lot.
The market is finally developing in Brazil, also GWM and BYD are building considerable sized factories, including for export and battery manufacturing. The GWM plant will build two large vehicles, a pickup and an SUV, both will run by electric motors and will have an ethanol-enabled range extender, similarly to the H6 that makes 28 km per liter.
Dude- that Volvo looks good to me ! I come from a Volvo family . My grandad drove one , my dad and mom… I was the weirdo that broke the tradition and went VW. At. Least I kept driving European cars 😬😬😜😜 I just wish they’d get their act together
Ordered my XC40 in UK last week, but I will definitely go for Nio or Fisker if they are avaliable in UK right now... For the time been... I will be getting the Volvo😅
Front wheel drive would work in smaller EVs I would have thought. It frees up boot/trunk space in the rear and so is space efficient. It's the same reason that the original Mini in the late 50s was such a clever design. Most EVs are large at the moment, hence rear wheel drive, but this will change as battery packs become more compact.
In Canada the XC40 AWD is 72k nd the Tesla Model Y is 70k. Not sure what the new versions will cost yet though but imo the XC40 is too expensive for its size class. So how exactly are Volvo going to get their prices down to petrol car prices while they increase their prices? They can't even compete with Tesla.
Dude these prices are the RRPs, but you cant buy one without ordering one, and the minimum delivery fee is $1400, so you need to add $1400 across the board. I also want to know why QLD is teh only Australian State offering the equivalent incentives to other countries. The incentives are all over the shop in Australia too. Why is that given most of them are now labor states? It makes no sense. The price incentive also doesn't include stamp duty in Australia. Again each state is difference - please comment on this so the state governments sort this out otherwise people are much better off flying to QLD - buy the car and driving back to their own state - nothing to stop people doing this. Its worth thousands, not hundreds - so lots will do it - stupid behavior by state governments - its like the bad old days with cigarettes and booze....
I don't get why everyone is so obsessed with fast charging speeds, does it really matter if its 20 or 25 minutes for a full charge?. Most EV owners will want to slow charge at home over night so you don't destroy your battery. And if you are on a roadtrip and you drive the 4-5 hours it takes to empty the battery, you will want to have a break anyway. Where i live the Model Y and XC40 Ultimate costs the same even after the Tesla price drops and i still have to get winter tires for the Tesla. I've tried both cars and would go with the new Volvo, mainly for the looks, very comfortable seats, softer suspension, easier to park in cities, Google Automotive and the premium feel of the interior. Ultimatly the biggest dilemma is if you should support a communist dictatorship or Mr. Vaporware, so its probably best to avoid both. But it's good to see other car companies gaining on Tesla so consumers have some real choices. And if you buy the model Y in Europe, it's made in China anyway.
rwd is always better than fwd. the only reason fwd is prevalent is the fact that its simpler and cheaper to make for the manufacturer. but there is a reason why rwd or 4wd is dominating on tracks.
Volvo make a fraction of the cars that Tesla do and will appeal to those who don’t want a Tesla. They are in a niche market position at the moment and if demand for their products is ok then why should they lower their price.
Im in the US and in the market for an EV. Here is the problem, horrible supply and only the high spec models are available. The car makers advertise a low price but then never build them and the dealers say due to supply constraints they only have components for a few models and of course they are the high end.
I had ordered the 23 model with 420km front wheel drive but discovered they have an extended range 570km rear wheel drive been delivered in April about the same price if I swap out trim level from ultimate to core .I could pick a higher spec caused I wouldn't get 5000 government grant as car would be above 60,000 euro ,so yes over priced compared to tesla only choosing cause I'm trading in another diesel volvo .
Many, at least in Sweden, firmly believe Volvo is still a Swedish company, and want to continue buying the "classic Swedish car". And consider Polestar a Volvo, despite their claim it's not them same (sure looks like one). A bit weird if Volvo will compete against itself (aka Polestar) on the EV market, as if the competition wasn't already hard enough, Volvo is letting about 1300 people go (6% of the coworkers in Sweden), to cut costs. Also a major overhaul is coming, their CEO says.
I'd be happy to buy one...if they were cheaper than Tesla. If Volvo (or others) want to tap the anti-Tesla market, they are really setting themselves up for failure as more and more buy Tesla cars.
@@HarmLessSolutionsNZ Depends - the cheaper versions in each model (XC90 has 4) are far from luxury. My volvo xc90 4wd was top-notch in every way, but also a lot more expensive than the ones with cheaper seats, less leather, no 4wd etc. And my tesla is in the higher range, and just as top-notch.
A front wheel drive car with a heavy battery underneath would not have good traction climbing a hill with switchbacks, but downhill it would do better.
That’s because previous XC40 recharge was still built on the ICE floorpan, hence front motor and front wheel drive for the single power unit and why the new single motor is rear wheel drive.

Ever considered that Volvo can't ramp up production fast enough to sell more cars, so they maximize profit by raising pricing while they wait until more production capacity is available? New factories are being built, but can't produce more. Look at what Tesla has done when they had high demand and low production, they did the exact same.

Just remember interior of cx40 and c40 is basically from 2017.

Any progress on the RADAR ev ute by Geeley who own Volvo, that would be far more competitively priced, at least $20,000 cheaper with 600 klm range.
