    I have friends who own Tesla 3s, a model X and also some Polestar 2s. All are very happy with their cars. I test drive a Polestar when they first came out in Aus last year. I'm a keen, but not overly sporting driver and it's handling and performance was very good. Currently own an Holden/Opel Astra VXR which is a true hot hatch. I'm really interested to see the Australian pricing of the 2024 polestar as I really just personally prefer the styling and more conventional cockpit? layout to the Tesla 3. I don't need a really big boot and the compromised interior space due to it sharing chassis with the Volvo 40 doesn't concern me. I actually like feeling more cocooned.
    The build quality is very good, and with the better standard equipment, it is boost in performance, range, charging speed and RWD over older model is very appealing. I live in country NSW so range and charge speed important to me. I also have solar power on the house so extra savings in fuel/energy costs. Mind you the Tesla is brilliant with all that with bonus of the Tesla charging network. So many decisions I need to make. Might just go grab a scotch for now 😅
    PS wishing you and Mrs Viking and family all the best in hopes of recovery.

    The first Volvo with front-wheel drive was presented in 1985, the 480ES. all Volvo cars from 1927 to 1985 had been rear-wheel drive. But it was at the beginning of the 90s that it really became front-wheel drive on a popular Volvo with the Volvo 850. Because the Volvo 740 was rear-wheel drive, right?

    Drove one for a week, on hire from Hertz. Great car.
    I used to love the look of the Ford Mustang ICE. But I think the Polestar 2's design language looks better. If the LR RWD starts hitting the sub $60k price point in the next year or so, and offers 600+km of range it will be a winner in Australia. They are fantastic to drive too.

    Don't forget that there is a sub-trunk under the cargo panel in the rear that hold a carry-on suitcase. Plus, unlike a VW Golf, you have a "frunk". The Polestar is a better built car than the Tesla and if you option the performance pack, you get better wheels, suspension and a higher horsepower output. The comfort package gets you an awesome stereo and other stuff. Besides Tesla and Mercedes, the Polestar software is Android Automotive, which is superior to most OEM software. Polestar is building a US Factory so future production can qualify for the $7500 tax credit.

      Drove a Tesla Model 3 Long Range and an AWD Polestar 2 with Performance pack at the recent Fully Charged Live North in the UK and both for the first time.
      The Telsa drove like a go-cart and had great frontal visibility, but I couldn't live with having to look that far away to look at the instruments (ie see what the car was doing) and wasn't impressed with the minimalist steering wheel controls either - basically the controls/instruments to me were too clever by half. When I gave it full throttle (on a British 2 lane road) it was terrifying and I had to back off almost immediately.
      The Polestar for me had a better driving position, infinitely better instruments and controls, nicer seats, generally better quality interior and most importantly with similar performance to the Tesla could actually take full power with full control.
      The Tesla felt like a hot rod. The Polestar felt like a properly engineered sports sedan. And it had a hatch. No contest in my view.

The lease on my Outback expires in about 15 months, so I feel that it's time to consider what sort of replacement I will get. This would be very high on my list because of its value for money and has a dashboard where it ought to be: in front of the driver. Sadly, there is no Polestar dealership in Canberra. Tye maximum range doesn’t mean much in practice. Most manufacturers recommend to not go below 20% charge and to charge up to 80%. That means in practice that only 60% of the maximum range can be used, i.e. 500km range becomes 300km. One needs to stop for a coffee or lunch every three hours. Far from being ideal for long trips. Once the max range goes to around 1000km there will be enough range for longer trips without having to plan the stops. Drive 6-7 hours and then stop for the night. What will happen to the second hand prices when the new model doubles the range?

    Hi Sam, I like your channel, but (and feelings is not an issue): As you keep repeating the thing about ownership, I just wonder, is the main ownership in the company what defines whether a car is American, Swedish or Chinese? Was Volvo considered an American car when it was owned by Ford? I don't think so. The build quality, the design, engineering and sustainable thinking is all Swedish, even though the manufacturing is done in China for now, but soon also in the USA. That being said, I'd prefer ownership was Swedish or at least not Chinese but as long as the car has the qualities it has I consider Polestar and Volvo Swedish cars, funded by Chinese owners. If the main office moves from Sweden and design and engineering is done in China, I'll reconsider.

    • @DouglasABailey
      @DouglasABailey Рік тому +1

      Fully agree. These cars are still have Swedish design through and through. Geely just gave Volvo money and EV tech and said go for it.

    I really like the new Polestar 2 and the updates that they made for 2024.
    But I wish they would have changed the interior a bit - the center console layout is still terrible, with an unnecessary shift knob that takes up too much space and cup holders that are awkwardly placed and normally hidden away. If you search "Polestar 2 cup holder" most of the early results show aftermarket cup holders that owners have bought or 3D printed to overcome the terrible design.

    Tesla batteries are a known quantity, Polestar less so, even though they can give you a good range.

    What I think is that every one that is talking about how good are the new EVs, they need to do so within the context of Tesla. That is, how they compare in range, price, offered features, OTA updates, Software, performance, reliability, ease of Charging, etc. Many EVs appear to be good on paper like the VW id.3/4, but they are kind of junk/crappy. If you don't believe me, ask this guy J Gubberman from "E for Electric", that said the VW was good, until eventually he toss out that crap and did not renew his VW lease. So I think that for us that want to get something real good and reliable from every angle, the evaluation has to be based in all those parameters.

      If you’ve followed EVs for a while, you’d have noticed that until about 2019-2020 that’s what everyone was doing. Every car was compared to Tesla.
      Now, everyone actively seems to avoid a comparison to Tesla when reviewing a new EV. They just say they’re good, usually.

    • @malcolmstreet1
      @malcolmstreet1 Рік тому

      In 2WD form the current Polestar 2s are heavy compared to a Model 3, but about the same as a Model Y. Normally the use of an ICE platform is blamed for this, but the Kia/Hyundai/Genesis cars such as the EV6 are all heavier, as is the smaller Cupra Born, and they're based on a bespoke EV platform. It appears that EV platforms are often designed to be very flexible, ie scale up to big cars, which means at the smaller end they're overengineered and hence heavy.

    Pricing comparisons in this video seem wrong... he appears to be comparing the single motor standard range which is the base model in australia with the single motor long range which is the base model in the US. The US figures quoted are from the Polestar configurator but the AU figures are not. None of this is explained in the video which makes me second guess everything thats presented. This led me to hunt down other videos and I am confident to now say there are far better researched youtubers out there to watch instead.

    I would not buy it either. For a luxury vehicle this seems reasonably priced, but I just don’t get the brand. Unfortunately for me.
    Hope there is not a menu of options to add in though. No CV joints for RWD, only UJ from motor to hub. It makes sense and perhaps allows for a Frunk too.

    Indeed, better price for the new Polestar. In reality, those tax incentives for USA build cars, is just an import tax on all EV's outside the USA.
    Fair, coarse thats what the EU is doing too, to protect the EU car manufactors. But in the EU it is just driving up the EV prices overall by 25%, making EV's "unobtainable" for the masses.
    In Netherlands, every EV below €45.000 can have tax reduction of €2950. Bringing the Tesla mofdel 3 down to around $45.000 us dollar.
    Even with incentives unobtainium for the masses. But the cheapest EV with a 200mls range is still $38.500.
    We will have to stick with the €20k ice cars for the next decade.

      @SmartMart1658 Рік тому

      The Polestar 2 DOES qualify for the US Federal tax credit of $7500 IF you lease the car. This loophole in the IRA will help Polestar to benefit from the tax credit - but only if you lease it.

    • @BMWHP2
      @BMWHP2 Рік тому

      @@SmartMart1658 Nice for US citizens. But only for US produced EV's. So in fact a protection meganism.
      Not only for the promotion of EV's, but to protect the US market from cheaper Countries.
      Same as in the EU.
      Protectionism is killing the EV adoption.
