Darryl Suter might have Flames do well in playoffs so no reason to consider to fire him unless missing playoffs. Remember how je turned the Kings 2012 season around & win the Cup? He is an xlnt HC. Flames could surprise.
He won the Jack Addams last year and coached the team to their second best season in franchise history. And his extension doesn't even begin until next year. He won't get fired. Even if we make the playoffs this year we aren't going deep.
Not anymore. But he used to be, and that was what the "Decade of Darkness" was all about: If you played for the dynasty-days Oilers, you automatically got a front office role, courtesy of Katz. And the majority of those hires sucked. I think Katz eventually saw the writing on the wall with those moves (and also dealt with severe illness), so he hired Bob Nicholson as team president and retreated out of the spotlight.
It's one of two things: The personnel in Cgy just doesn't fit into Sutter's grindey style of play or Sutter's style of play is too slow to keep up with today's game...
I agree he is not the right coach for this group but I wouldn’t say it’s outdated. They had 3 40 goal scorers last year, almost 4. They just need a different coach because his style of coaching is only good for two seasons before he loses the room.
OMG you guys nailed it💯. Sutter is totally Edward's guy. Murray can fire him and pay him out. Gaurenteed Tre didn't extend his contract. I like u guys !!!
Kings fan here: The Kings players were REALLY sick of the guy, what, like the season after winning their 2nd cup? or whatever? As a Kings fan I am still sick of the guy. (except I do miss his son Chris at the games).
YES PLEASE FIRE SUTTER. Am I the only one who still remembers his time here in the mid to late 2000s?? WHY DID THEY EVEN BRING HIM BACK?! They'll probably never say it, but I am convinced that Gaudreau and Tkachuk wanted out because of Sutter.
I mean I get Sutter isn't everyone's fav dude, but why isn't there any blame falling on the player's at all. Kadri and Huberdeau have had massive drop offs (expected tbh) and this is like year five of people talking about how the Flames are super disappointing. I feel like thinking firing Sutter is gonna fix things is just cope
The old guard coaches like that are great at first. They can light a fire under the players asses but that intensity they bring kinda losses efficacy pretty quickly. Players get burnt out on it easily. I just don't know there's a place for guys like him and Torts, etc anymore.
Flame’s issue are deep rooted. Always have the talent but inconsistentcy kills them every other year. Look at there records the last 6ish years there good then awful good then awful. They really need to clear house from top to bottom. But wont happen since they have to much cap tied up in older guys
The Flames went out and tried to throw cash at the problem of their two homegrown superstars leaving and it’s not working, this team has 0 chemistry and yet somehow that’s Darryl’s fault. This podcast is soft.
They should have fired him last year when he refused to play Vladar against EDM and almost single handedly threw the series to EDM. Instead, they EXTENDED HIM. It's mind boggling. Darryl Sutter hockey is very one dimensional: prevent the other team from playing the game by aggressive forechecking, tying sticks up, etc. get possession and dump it in, proceed by retrieving the puck & throwing the first available shot on net. Hope for someone to get a lucky goal and if that fails, have someone near the net to stuff it under the goalie pads. Rinse, and repeat. There is no creativity, there is no flair, there is no fun in watching it and I'm assuming, the players playing the style absolutely loathe it. Which is what I'm sure Walsh meant with his tweet.
I think he should be canned. At the end of the day treliving needs huberdeau to work out more than he needs to keep sutter happy and the first step is finding a different coach who can possibly tap into the player we know he can be, it appears Darryl isn’t capable of that right now.
As a life long kings fan Darryl Sutter is not the problem in that locker room he's a great coach the players need to be adults and play they are getting paid millions of dollars to play hockey they need to grow a sack man up and play the sport
I thought he should have been fired for the comments he made at the end of the game when he embarrassed himself by trying to put down Pelletier....a rookie playing his first game....how pathetic is Sutter.
it's too late for that. They can hire Boudreau, but I'm sure the players won't get acclimated to his coaching style to cover up the ground they lost already.
@Scott Stenlund Well there's really not much they can do to salvage their season. If they hope to have a better year next year, firing Sutter in the off season should be their first priority. Work on getting a better coach afterwards, one that might emphasize utilizing the offensive talent they have on the roster.
@Scott Stenlund He's not a good coach. This is demonstrated by the fact his systems aren't full systems, or that his systems aren't modified or augmented to support 4 on 4 gameplay (something that seriously wrecked the Flames against EDM last year). He also doesn't line match/adapt to situations in-game, rides his starter goaltender way too much. I could go on and on. But let's not pretend he's a good coach, because he's not. Sutter makes bad players on the roster _'good'_ at the expense of throttling the skill of already good players. Why do you think the 3rd and 4th lines tend to produce the most? It's not because Huberdeau and Kadri are bad, it's because they're not being utilized effectively. Every player is tasked with shadowing another player and tying up their stick. It's hard to play your _own_ game when most of the time in game is spent trying to prevent your opponent from playing theirs. And before you mention Gaudreau/Tkachuk, they knew they weren't signing again in the offseason and they deviated from his systems GREATLY. What can your boss do or say to you when you're literally doing most of the work on the team?? Hard to score when you're expected to throw the 1st available shot on net and have someone near the net to just stuff it in. They did things a lot differently and it shows.
As a flames fan do you think they will fire darry or no I mean the flames are not doing that bad they just need to make so trades just stop blaming the coach

Sutter may surprise like he did in 2012. Just has to get in. Look how Panthers fell apart yr after firing their HC despite Pres's Trophy last season.
I agree, and I don’t think he should be fired. Sutter is a great coach.

I hadn't watched a clip in a while. Steve's immediate response to "wanna bet" got me lol
I don't see how Markström having a below .900 save percentage is on the coach at all, on top of huberdeau simply playing horrendous

You forgot Geoff Ward. I feel like Bob Hartley was the last best motivator they had and he was Feaster's hire.

Discussing the Flames from five years ago, is just 'cope.'
People too quick to get on the coach, Darryl was fine last season but now it’s his fault? Cmon now..

It's insulting for 3 guys to know so little about something and say such ridiculous things sometimes.

Hire Travis Green in off season. RHETTRO WARRENER for GM🤔.
bednar for the avs in the worst possible way. Now a cup winner
that flames team on paper looks like a top 4 team in the west, what the hecks going on with them this year?
Same as Ottawa and DJ smith. Coaches have a shelf life.
Weird how you never hear about Kirk Muller being up for head coach.
