Keegan Michael Key has apparently found the formula for Robin Williams level of energy. This man is a million miles a minute and he's there every beat.
Honestly can Keegan Michael-Key write a book on improv/comedy or give some sort of lecture series because he is so fucking well articulated and insightful about this
I did it in college. It’s hard AF and it never got easier - at least for me. I was panicked the entire time and could barely breathe. My performance got better but the sheer panic never waned.
Comedy doesn’t get nearly enough respect for its level of intellect. Whether that’s improv or standup or comedic actors or writers. I’m not gonna just tell you a story with all the depth and emotion and continuity of a drama, I’m gonna make you laugh through it too. Pretty incredible stuff when you listen to the best in the world explain it like this.
Keegan-Michael Key is a wonderful comedian and seems to be a lovely person. He's very clear at explaining his improv process. I just want to chime in here to mention that there are other forms of improvisation beyond comedy improv in which different techniques are used to produce improvisational theatre: dramatic , narrative and physical theatre.
Not that I needed this to sell me on the movie, but now I'm even more excited to see Don't think twice. Keegan is truly a brilliant actor and a comedy mastermind.
Depends where you are. Easiest way is through a class or intro workshop. Truth in Comedy is an improv bible of sorts but improv is more about practice than theory.
What does Sam mean at the beginning when he says "at the beginning of each show there's a improv tradition I know it I know it happens at Iowa..."? Did Sam or Keegan do improv at the University of Iowa?
Sounds a lot like basketball in that the ball will find the open person. Just be patient and “define the reality” and don’t panic while we let it develop.
No, it is. You're in a trench under machinegun fire. One dude starts yelling and jumps up to run into the hail of bullets, so you pull him back and pin him down. That IS having his back.
List of things funnier than IMPROV 1) Clipping toenails 2) Attending your mothers funeral 3) Amending your tax returns 4) Flipping the USB cord to plug it in the right way 5) Stubbing your toe on the coffee table -Zanzabar Jenkins, this is the OFFICIAL consensus of reddit
I need more interviews of Key just explaining stuff.
Here's an hour ua-cam.com/video/wy5N9CljB2Y/v-deo.html

His brain needs a big multimedia deal!!!

ADHD
I can sorta relate to this when my friend almost dicked me over during my improv audition for a play but my other friend saved it by a splinter

He is a scared, scarred child terrified you'll be bored and turn away. Your back is his nightmare.
His energy is just so contagious.
The Heart Of A Blackbird True
That... was the most interesting talk I've ever heard.
seriously. Keegan-Michael Keys advice and insight on improv is genius. such an easy straight forward way to breaking down the dynamics.
BOOM! Agent Michael Scarn FBI, nobody move.
*Everybody dies* -End of Scene-
I’ve got a gun!
Need a Michael Scarn/Bert Macklin crossover event
That is an artistic level of passive aggression.
Keegan doesn't turn this off at all. He's like this in the makeup chair before a show.
-Himself.
Honestly can Keegan Michael-Key write a book on improv/comedy or give some sort of lecture series because he is so fucking well articulated and insightful about this
Listening to these bits almost makes me want to get into improv..
Improv can be difficult at first. But it is really fun to find what types of situations you get into.
Samee
until you're really, really good it's painful for the audience and performer. same with stand-up, but I think improv bombing is harder to watch.
I did it in college. It’s hard AF and it never got easier - at least for me. I was panicked the entire time and could barely breathe. My performance got better but the sheer panic never waned.
I have huge respect for improv actors. It's a trait I always wished I'd mastered.

Keegan-Michael Key is born to be an actor it is in his blood
Keegan-Michael Key is a wonderful comedian and seems to be a lovely person. He's very clear at explaining his improv process. I had NO idea he was so eloquent
He just introduced me to the world of improv in 2 videos
"What the f*! Why are you a dinosaur?!?!" Yaassss!
i would be the dinosaur guy in that situation
Yoo same 😂
Master Class in improve. Nice. reeeeal nice.
Its not really though, its just how he does improv, this method could and will most likely be very bad for many actors.
*Noice.
@@Wwisp idiot
He'd be an amazing teacher.
Not that I needed this to sell me on the movie, but now I'm even more excited to see Don't think twice. Keegan is truly a brilliant actor and a comedy mastermind.

Improv means you pay attention to more than what is right in front of you.
Improv is so great.

Thanks for posting. Enlightening and informative. Love Michael's energy.
Finally, someone explaining how improv works.
Hell yeah,this man got skill
this is amazing for story writers
F'n brilliant. Brilliant.
This makes me want to learn improv.
Any tips on where to start? Online resources? :)
Depends where you are. Easiest way is through a class or intro workshop. Truth in Comedy is an improv bible of sorts but improv is more about practice than theory.
Find a group that does improv in your area.
If not, find people and start one. Non-formal education groups/organizations. Find them and propose.
Omg! I love him! I've been a waitress for 19 years and this analogy describes it perfectly!!
Great to see the process!
This why Middleditch & Schwartz is so profoundly underrated.
wow new appreciation for actors now, well maybe just Key. Yeah only Key.
Very helpful, thank you
I would have gone with " what the fuck, I ordered a clown not dino!"
Ok Keegan-Michael, where is that podcast about improv techniques?? I never knew I needed something more than I know that now. DO IT!!!
I love him
Wow. Amazing.
He's in s movie where this exact thing happens. It's called
Don't Think Twice
1:45 my dad's chauffeur jumped at this part. I gotta be careful what i am listening to when he's driving lol
This is so awesome!
Very good intro to improv
Wow amazing
Oh gosh ain’t he sweet ! Love Keegan so much
GENIUS
I fuckin love Keegan.
What does Sam mean at the beginning when he says "at the beginning of each show there's a improv tradition I know it I know it happens at Iowa..."? Did Sam or Keegan do improv at the University of Iowa?
I assume what he said was "IO," (not Iowa). iO stands for the ImprovOlympic theater in Chicago.
Sounds a lot like basketball in that the ball will find the open person.

this was playing away from me so all i could do was listen to this. WAT THE FUCK ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT
KMK IS THE MAN
ohhh
that would be pretty funny if someone was trying to show off to Lorne Michaels with their dinosaur impression
I've tried to explain this to my podcast partner....he just doesnt understand it.
I got your back…waaaay back!
yes he can improvise but can he perform lines from Henry V by Shakespeare?
nice fedora
probs easier to perform lines from Henry V, then to improvise well
Yeah. I also think it's easier to learn lines and how to perform them than to learn to think like these improvisers do.
Hey, it's the guy from animal planet!
Very could explanation for someone who has no experience to start with.
Man, Keegan is such a great actor and yet he hasn't really had any good roles I can think of since K&P...
y’all see that pit sweat tho? i’m not judging i be having that same issue tbh
This looks like... almost too clean
Its tripping me out that they both have the exact same beard
In a way, not accepting the dinosaur person is not having their back.
No, it is. You're in a trench under machinegun fire. One dude starts yelling and jumps up to run into the hail of bullets, so you pull him back and pin him down. That IS having his back.
sense of our relationship
figure out where you are
dungeons and ragons
Seems a lot like taking psychedelics... wondering if people are on your side, reading actions and circumstances deeper than what might be "normal"
2:52 those pit stains
I love Keegan-Michael Key but what the hell is he talking about???
is it just me does keegan seem angry
He's got some super sweaty pits
But you never went back to the Mom!
2:52 Nice pit stain man...
Yea.. he's human.

+Neon Flare Shame. Couldn't even use an original avatar either.

Improv isn't meant always to be funny
Keegan cares WAY too much about improv. I'm assuming this INTENSE improv drama unfolded in front of an audience of about 12 people.
Probably more than that. But also you want people that care about what they are doing or else what's the point.
inprov is gay honest
