I'm sure there was a point long ago in history when Kung Fu practitioners trained and fought hard like modern Muay Thay, boxing, or MMA practitioners. Then 'masters' started putting profits ahead of teaching hard Kung Fu and their tradition was lost.
I read somewhere before that during Mao Zi Dong era, Kung Fu practises were banned. So people had to practise in secret at nights, and probably due to the restriction, majority people also were afraid to learn them openly. Hence, the fighting arts became "softer" and more towards "Health" purpose. Maybe similar to what happened with Kenjutsu, Jiujutsu in Japan in early 20th century. Became more of "self-development" type like Kendo and Aikido.

In his early interviews, he said that he wanted to showcase that some / most martial arts are outdated compared to modern MMA. Only later did it turn into the whole " fake martial artists " thing. Interesting video. Just one point. Tai Chi and Wing Chun ARE Kung Fu. Though to be honest, Chinese martial arts were never traditionally referred to by that term. The name is apparently a 20th century coinage.

In Chinese language the word martial arts is Wushu from Wu(Martial) and Shu(arts/skills/technique)...
and in some parts of china Quanfa or Chuan fa is also used meaning Quan/Chuan(fist) and Fa(method) or simply Quan/Chuan meaning Boxing/Fist

I practiced Wing Chun for several years. I believe it can be very effective if used by an actual fighter. Bruce Lee is the prime example. The problem is that the training doesn't prepare you for actual fights so when a Wing Chun practitioner is faced with an actual fighter he most likely doesn't stand a chance.

Some of these martial arts instructors or "masters" attain a cult like following, I've witnessed it when I shared a house with 4 black belts, 2 of who were teachers. I saw get togethers where their pupils were pathetic grovelling arse kissers. Basically out of the 20 or so black belts from that certain discipline i'd consider only 2 the real deal, the rest could be floored with just basic boxing skills easily

He first practiced Sanda and did some Sanda competitions when he was young, then he started practicing MMA around 2000.

All these masters and their techniques work perfectly if both parties just stick to the script. I am sorry that he is getting a hard time from his country but then China is always on some ones back.

I think that he just means he didn't do well in professional MMA. But you're right. Most fighters don't make it as professionals. That doesn't mean they aren't great fighters. Just not at that level. Very few will do well enough to make a living in MMA, boxing, kickboxing, etc.

My eyes were opened when I did a style with jujitsu and advanced kicking and striking(Hapkido). I can never go back to training only one narrow style. MMA is the repository of effectively handling all the ranges and situations of unarmed combat. The techniques come from the traditional and modern advances made thus far. Can't argue against better combat technology. Better PED's being used in the sport also. Can't beat a jacked up monster as an out of shape weakling.
