nah if it was truly modern anime, miria would be super wet for him on the spot and they'll have many many sex days and nights a few episodes later so... not different from what happened here really
This episode is finished/colored by a Korean subcontractor, Star Production. Since Studio Nue was a rather small anime production team, they had no choice but sending out their schematic drawings to overseas for cheaper subcontractors to finish. Nue usually checked their subcon’s works and re-work if needed, but mostlikely too rush to check, they just put them on air without rework.
Ah, well, that explains sub-par quality of this episode. At moments you had a nice and detailed animations and drawings, and sometimes this... In fact, I recently watched 4k AI Macross video montage, and higher res really "enhances" how plain and detail-less some scenes are, lol. Reminds me of far foliage and hills in TES Oblivion....
So THAT's why his hair is green - I learned decades later it was supposed to be blue. Nonetheless, the core of Mikimoto's pun - "Blue Max: a decoration associated with the earliest ace pilots" - survived

If there were ever an anime in more dire need of an HD remake and remastering, it would Macross. Seriously, with todays technology they could make some amazing looking stuff.
You can only hope if they make a video game out of it. That's the only way people are willing to pay. Instead of the cheap online animations free for view.
But they should find a way to add the YF-19 designs if they do a remake, like halfway the series yo we got new valks get rid of those ugly (in comparison) vf's.

Maybe it's because I grew up in the 80s when the F14 Tomcat was *the* hot fighter jet but I think the VFs look better than the YF19 - not that the latter isn't awesome in its own right, but it just feels too Gundam-esque for my tastes.

You know, in my experience, no knife fight ever ends with a marriage proposal. It usually ends with one person on their way to the hospital, and another on their way to jail where they will get another sort of proposal.
I recall that the plan was for this episode to be a 3-parter. But the sponsors said they would cut the budget, so it was going to end at episode 27 rather than at episode 39. But the ratings were so high, it got to run up to 36 episodes. For episode 39, they planned that for Flashback 2012.
I don't think Studio Nue's people had run into the expression, but many tactical aviators liken air-to-air combat to "a knife fight in a phone booth". As such, there was a potential "gotcha"' in this encounter between the two air warriors.

Max and Miriya: The first interspecies union, and one of the most legendary families in the whole of Macross. Proof that Humans and Zentraedi could live in peace. And with the Zentraedi bringing a strong and lasting genome to the Humans, making them far more capable of tackling a dangerous universe. Seven kids, many famous pilots and celebrities. And of course Mayor Miriya Jenius of Macross 7's "City 7". And one of the greatest pilots who ever served both the Zentraedi, and the people of Earth. A true hero and legend in her own right.
American Robotech has a few flaws, but this scene is not one. It's so perfect. How her respect for him, and his compassion for her, lead to romance and love.
This is a good example of why I think the original Macross is superior to the Robotech dub; The Macross audio, both Japanese and English dub, is not freaking obnoxious! The Robotech dub, for whatever reason, has people speaking every five damned seconds and won't let the show itself breathe! Whether it's one of the characters talking or thinking, or the damned narrator telling us what we already know, there's never a quiet moment in ANY of the Robotech installments. Take for example the scene after the knife fight. In the original Macross, either Japanese or english dub, both Max and Milia hold one another as they start to realise their feelings for one another, and there's practically no line of dialogue, allowing us to just take in the moment. The Robotech dub, on the other hand, almost ruins it by having the two characters going on and on about what love is and the narrator commenting on the scene! God, I just wanna smack some sense into the writers of the dialogue so the characters would shut up!
Lol. Well, the eighties weren’t known for having spectacular dubs - Robotech being one of the better ones. But I agree with you - I found Robotech’s Minmay to be a really annoying character, whereas Macross’ Minmay to be a lot more endearing.
Agreed, but you know what would happen... they would take certain "liberties" here and there and make a mess of the original spirit of things. If they did a scene for scene reanimation with that style used in the pachinko machine, that would be awesome.

I thought Max was hot stuff when he used a Valkyrie to sneak up on and drop a Zentraedi line soldier with a kick-didn't know about the brain-computer interface in the helmets. This was meant to show him as a tactical genius even without the fancy technology.
welll trap for the aliens.... in one version of the story, years later, one of the other Zentraedi women decided she wanted Breetai.... Well.... Breetai didn't really take a lot of work to convince to play along when you really think about it.
