Given they're taking a boat from an island filled with the chosen of a greek goddess, and there are plenty of magical artifacts on the island, I wouldn't be too surprised. Honestly I expected the boat to be magic, probably teleporting at some point.
Gameorama91 In BvS she said that she walked away from civilization 100 yrs ago, meaning she probably gave up and never interfered with the 2nd world war.
I hope they make some kind of easter egg or something or just one line from her saying something about she been there, I wont like to watch another WW movie in another World War
I actually used to think the same thing about the marksman's story line but I had it pointed out to me that his story was actually a lot deeper than I originally thought it was meant to be. The typical way that a story about a marksman with PTSD would normally end would be with the marksman magically getting over his PTSD and saving the day by shooting someone, which I'd argue would just make his PTSD worse if anything. Wonder Woman did an excellent job subverting a lot of typical tropes and Charlie's was really the best because in any other story, he would have gotten to the scene where he's ready to give up and he would have either left only to come back later in some big, dramatic, convenient, and incredibly unbelievably moment, or the others would have convinced him to come along and told him that ha can still shoot if he just tries. Instead of either of those things, Diana encourages him to come with them by suggesting he sing for them along the way, showing that she values something very humanizing about him rather than his ability to kill. Charlies arc could have been better, I won't deny that, but there was certainly an arc to speak of and it wasn't as bad as I've seen people suggest.
Sir Crimson nope. Matthias Patrick is a twat nonce. He only pinned a comment defending him and completely denouncing, condemning opinion and criticism. MATPAT PINNED A COMMENT AGAINST FREE FUCKING SPEECH.
Well, i have a problem with the Movie. Cause it's objectively bad. Main Character is running on Feminism alone, she has nothing other that charges her Battery. Just feminism - and that's in fact the worst of all characters. She's a hollow vessel for vague ability sets and completly hollow believes, repeating the statement "Truth is what you believe." Only idiots believe that the Truth is what you believe - this is a naive, dumb Mindset, in fact. She's just a badly written character.
@Kristopher Leffingwell I did and was disappointed in it tbh , It had an amazing cast but lacked vision.... I recently watched it again to give it another chance but it only made it worse.... Not to mention WW84 was even worse and made me hate one of my favourite childhood hero
Wow. So basically everything about the rest of the movie hinges on the success of the boat ride. That's scarier than the rest of the movie's twists and turns if you ask me.
A few things, first Zack only did the story not the script meaning it likely read something to the effect of Diana leaves Femescura with Steve and make their way back to London where... Secondly it's never stated that it's a Brittish tug boat, it's possible that it was an allied ship that Steve talked into taking them or It's possible he used the phrase tug boat because any ship taking them would've tugged them there and instead of explaining the differences between ships to Diana, a woman who knows practically nothing about the world he used tug boat as its pretty self explanatory. Hope this is thoughtful and not condescending, love your work!
Gotta say, you spelt Themyscira wrong. Also, he never really took the time to oversimplify things later, and most of the time where he realizes how little she knows about the world comes after the boat ride. The allied boat in general thing may work out, but it still may take too much time, considering how slow the tugboat would be going. 14 knots ain't much to go 3300 miles.
MatPat I hate to say it, Just know i only point this out for love (for the film theories), the main thing that you are forgetting is Themyscira itself. In the comic books Themyscira is called Paradise Island and like it stated in the movie "the island blessed by the Olympian Gods, no man was allowed to physically set foot on it" and what is not stated is that the Island can move to any location on earth (like the island in lost) possibly by Zeus or the Queen.. Using that logic then the island at that time of the plane crash could have been where you said it was. then when the plane crashed into the island it could have moved closer to london and moved again when Diana left to ensure that the location of the island can not be found by outsiders. Zeus knowing that all this needed to happen. I do have to give Gadot Props though she was 5 month pregnant during filling of the movie.
Steve and his plane were the breaking point of the whole shield in the island. After he crashed, men came after him and discovered it. The scene where Diana saw the plane entering, it looked like it broke an invisible barrier
MatPat: Her whole name, Diana, is based on the Greek goddess. Me: ExcUSE me sir but Diana is the Roman goddess of the hunt. Artemis is her Greek counter part. (PS no hate, I love the channel, and your videos, I just read too much Percy Jackson) (Edit a y e a r later, hello to the people who corrected my spelling as if that were something important. Also, I am aware that Rick Riordan’s books are only based on mythology, not a completely accurate representation. Despite that, it is accurate enough for me to know that Diana is Roman and Artemis is Greek. Hope y’all are holding up in quarantine, and I recommend the Magnus Chase series if you like Percy Jackson and are looking for something to read. It’s got a wonderful story and wonderful representation).
I would think it was pretty common knowledge that greek and roman gods are pretty much one and the same. greek under a roman label, for the most part. stealing gods were quite stylish back then, I understand. :)
Zack Snyder movies in a nutshell Here's something nice Now here's that thing in a washed out color pallet LET'S ADD IN SOME EXPLOSIONS HERE'S A SKY BEAM!!!!!! AM I CONNECTING WITH YOU YET?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!
@@JianCB2 umm yeah i'm pretty sure that @Earl Brooks was making a joke. quoting the video. people are allowed to quote the video saying that matpat's joke is funny. stop being rude af
Themyscira doesn't have a set location, which is part of the reason why once you leave you can never return. So who knows, when they crossed the fog they might've been spat out into the English Canal.
christina1986ify that’s actually really probable but the island must always be moving locations which could technically mean that they could have been spat out ANYWHERE and they could have just gotten REALLY lucky
Zeus teleported the boat while the two slept, and when Steve (who at this time is still not entirely convinced on Diana's reality) woke up he resolved that they 'got lucky'. This explanation is actually hinted at in one of the comics as well, through one of Ares' insults that without Zeus, Diana's mission would have inevitably failed. Excellent video as always though MatPat, always love seeing these numbers crunched, no ill will whatsoever, just wanted to bring that little fact to light.
DailyTop5s literally the only part of the comment that is truly in relation to the movie is the part about Steve thinking they "got lucky" which is also mentioned in this video.... I haven't seen the movie once and I knew that part thanks to this video.... the rest of the comment is comic book lore... seriously, context clues honey...
But The German's Plane *Will Not Change* As Far As That Plane Can Go, Is Italy... (IF The Island Is Not In Somewhere Near Turkey, *Then The Plane Will NEVER Crash There...* Sooo Yeah, Unless The Island Is Moving More Faster Than A Jet..... Which Is Impossible..... It's Still No Use 😅)
@@imashadow699 From memory in the comics the island pretty much just magically teleported from place to place. So it's theoretically possible - especially if you assume whatever force moves the island wanted Diana to succeed. But if that's the case the film *really* should have at least mentioned briefly that the island had this capability...
Here's my theory: What if Ares wanted Diana to get there? What if he wanted her help, like he said when she was trying to kill him? That would explain getting there in one day, and how they were "lucky enough" to get a tugboat!
That's honestly a good idea. this comment is sorta under 'liked' cuz this seems like what would have likely happened. But there are still not evidence to help it out, plus if Zeus was trying to make it hidden (to the ancient Greeks anyway) wouldnt he have placed it in a place outside of the areas that the Greeks has been? And if this was the idea, it could be literally anywhere in the seas. Still good theory and thanks for reading. And this is just a COMMENT, A COMMENT THEORY _using an over used joke based on the quote of the video's youtuber_ ! Have a great day :>
If they made it there by the means of a deity shouldn't the spy have noticed how soon they made it back comparatively to how long it took him to get to Turkey in the first place? Didn't Ares also mention first seeing her in that one room in England? Not sure about that lat one but these are my thoughts
Forgive my shameful knowledge of DC (and Greek mythology, my only qualification to speak on this is some research and reading Percy Jackson), but Ares is in this movie, and he’s a Greek god. Plus, there’s a comic (believe it’s Injustice) where literally every god shows up and they all are Greek gods. Maybe for the sake of the DCEU Diana is a Greek god, because there seem to be very few Roman gods in this franchise. Artemis is Diana’s counterpart, maybe they just didn’t want to call her Artemis
the great lotfi Real mature, Oscar Neri, he makes other mistakes too; for the Better Call Saul theory, he stated what everyone knew the first episode...
I love how this channel is about science and its real-world applications and implications, yet most of the comments I've seen have basically been, "But Matpat, what about frickin' MAGIC?!?! You didn't think about that did you! Theory disproved!" No, he didn't think about your silly magic boat, and the *theory* (look up theory if you don't know its real meaning) is not disproved. *muttering to myself* Magic boats...are these people serious?
Tyler Whetstone THE WHOLE MOVIE IS ABOUT MAGIC Lmao why is magic such a crazy nonsensical idea in the movie where the main character is literally a God
jeduhh I'm not mad at all. I understand that it's just a movie and everyone's opinions are valid (to a point). I just thought the comments were humorous.
Stein Your comment is the kind that I find funny. Yeah, I get that there's a magic lasso and gods and other things, but the fact that everyone is so up in arms about is funny, especially on this channel.
Yeah, but Diana is the Roman form of Artemis and the Greek gods we’re all killed by Ares in the beginning so they chose Diana, the roman goddess that pretty much copies Artemis, who is the leader of the hunt. And if I remember correctly in one of the mythology’s there are a group of people called the amazons which are like the hunt so it is saying that Diana is like Artemis who leads the hunt who is like the Amazons. This is my guess that makes the most sense to me at least
Artemis/Diana is a hunter who uses bows and knifes and is a eternal maiden (virgin) / man hater and sister of Apollo also this is Greek mythology not roman it is Artemis not diana
I thought Themyscira is never in one location it was how they stayed hidden from Ares also why Diana may never find her way back home. although the pacing of the movie was off like i felt they cover a vast amount of ground on foot with like no time passing, the film could of used some more transitions to make it feel as time passed. also maybe magic boat?
Even if the island wasn't in the pinpointed coordinates, Steve did started his flight in Turkey, and that puts enough distance for both the plane and the boat.
Ponera Grimoire Apparently not, otherwise they wouldn't need to sail overnight. However, it's possible that it periodically changes location (as part of the enchantment making it difficult to find) and was closer to London when they left it. Diana's mother warns her that if she leaves the island she may never return. This could be an Amazonian rule of law or she could be referring to how difficult it would be to find it again...
The original script of the movie had an explanation for the fast travel. They were ment to fly on Steve's plane, because it didn't crash previously. Somewhere along the way writers crashed the plane, replaced it with a boat, and it never crossed their mind again.
That could have happened. It totally makes sense. However, the movie doesn't mention help from Poseidon or any other sea god. It would have been really easy too. Steve: "I'm not complaining, but how'd we get here so fast?" Wonder Woman: "I prayed to several sea gods to speed us on our way." Steve: "Neat."
Awesome theory. Just a little correction though, you are talking about Turkey in the video while it should of been the Ottoman Empire as Turkey as a country was established after WW1 :) (also the flag is a bit different)
Thanks MatPat, you helped me with my English exams through your theories, as in, the way you analyse them gives me a template on how to analyse the stories and poems we're given. I've gotten from a level 5 to a level 7 through watching your videos, so I just want to say thank you (So many likes, thanks guys!)
The whole Greece thing isn't much to go on for location. The people of Themyscira are reincarnated souls of women who were killed by men and created by Hippolyta and Antiope. After Ares tried to take over the island and after Hercules and Hippolyta defeated Ares, the Amazonian people DECIDED to base their island on Greece culture when they rebuilt. They adopted Greece culture, they weren't created into it. Greeks were actually enemy's of the Amazonian's. All lot happened with Hercules, who went mad and took over the Amazon island and forced the Amazons to leave their home. The remaining amazons found a new home in what we call the Bermuda triangle. This island became the new Themyscira and guarded by the magic sphere to protect it from new attackers. After that the original Themyscira gets destroyed. This Wonder Women movie takes place at the NEW Themyscira and can be easily found somewhere in the Bermuda. So they literally live next to the USA, weird right? But this doesnt help much since the closest the Burmuda is to England is 5,472 km. They are still screwed. Just saying.
This film’s mythology is so loosely based on Greek mythology that you really can’t use actual Greek mythology as evidence. For Christ sake, Ares killed all the immortal gods for some reason. And let’s not forget that Ares is an utter, 100 percent bad guy, despite none of the actual gods being "bad", and the only actual villains were the titans.
Themyscira is a constantly moving island. Which would explain why it's so hard or impossible for Diana to ever return to the island. The island wouldn't be in the same place it was when she left. Could the islands "mythical" movement (during Steve's capture and interrogation) put Diana closer to London at the time they left sailing? Therefore cutting travel time considerably. I'm really curious about this.
Doesn't change the fact that the plane would have to land near Themyscria 'somewhere' near Turkey. And from the video we see that the plane landed right on the very brim and edge of its zone of flight. That was the best possible outcuome.
HOLY SHIT YES. I'm gonna be honesty Mat Pat, it's been hard to sit through a lot of your videos recently, but this type of video (sticking to pure numbers and facts with no opinions) is my favorite from your channels. Please try to keep this up, I want another golden age of the theory channels
True but if it were a magic boat then why did it take them a whole day and night to get to London it seams like it'd it were magic it would have taken less time. You know?
It took me a LONG time to realize this, but MatPat is WRONG! There are two clues that indicate that the boat ride from the island to England did in fact take two weeks! Clue one: Diana falls asleep with her hair knotted in a braid rope, but wakes up with it loose and free-flowing. Clue two: Etta Candy says when she sees Steve that she hadn't heard from him in two weeks. That second one used to confuse me, but the research in this theory explains how that makes sense - he's been on a boat for two weeks and couldn't contact her. THEORY DENIED! I am copy/pasting this comment as replies all over this comment section so people might see it, this theory is old and no one will see the OP but it's really important here. Apologies for the spam if anyone gets this comment more than once.
Wandergirl108 That makes no sence. What if wteve just untied her hair? And what if he was just gone for two weeks? considering hes a spy he has to have been gone for a while.
+Wandergirl108 They would be sailing 3,300 miles which would take a long time to sail in a Greek ship and that is counting if they even make it out the Mediterranean Sea Because as he said the ship could not change directions it would be more likely if they got stuck on the coast of Italy rather than get out of the Mediterranean Sea If the rare chance they did they would have enough food for the journey and even than they would have more chance of straying off course to London and even if they were on the right course that would have taken more than 2 weeks at best and I am going to trail back to the beginning saying they only have two people on this ship which I think would slow them down even more and to be fair we do not count the journey they took at all like if they were any storms or even tidal waves that prevented them
Wandergirl108 Actually that does make sense, I can see that. But, what about their supplies? The movie didn't show any hint of that. Nice Theory though, it could indeed be true.
but maybe it was magic- maybe the gods were working in their favor, but I guess that doesn't explain it because Steve isn't surprised at how fast they a arrived. and who knows, maybe themiscyra is in a wierd magic almost wormhole like thing
Can everyone just chill? He's not "attacking" Snyder he's making a joke, y'know, comedy. This was a fun little theory, he said he liked the movie, he's not doing this to be spiteful. It's a comedy video, with educational THEORY. Theories in case you've forgotten, are not necessarily true or fact. I personally loved this episode as with all your content, keep up the good work Matpat and the team
Wolf Girl22 People seem to have completely forgotten humor and the very point of this channel as of late and are looking for any excuse to attack. I've honestly stopped reading comments in Game Theory videoes, just wanted to look at this too for confirmation.
Because most of the DCEU fans are tired of the bashing and the fact that they're being compared to Marvel when they got almost nothing in common. And the fans of Snyder are tired of the bashing of a guy who just try to make his work. And when you REALLY know how the cinema industry works, the bashing becomes worst.
The theory isn't the thing to be 'not chill' about in this one. Nor is the 'Snyder bashing conform the tone of the channel'... agreed. The bashing of comment-section though........... different story. The 'if you are one of the very few who actually bring up something that isn't flat out terrible, it is of approximately 'this easy to disprove'-quality', yeah not a fan. On the other hand Bringing up how unlikely it was they would find a tugboat to get a ride from.... while for the purposes of the theory, completely irrelevant, as the fact that it could have (unlikely but possible) and is shown it did happen, so no impact what so ever. as an excuse to bring up more interesting stuff like: what kind of speeds and numbers are we talking about with boats from that era? Stuff like that, that's nice
MatPat you forgot that the possibility that they might be mythical ships. The Phaeacians in the Odyssey had ships from the gods that could go anywhere in one day! If that were the case this would be possible. :) QUOTE WIKIPEDIA: The Phaeacians possessed remarkable ships. They were quite different from the penteconters, the ships used during the Trojan War, and they were steered by thought. King Alcinous says that Phaeacians carried Rhadamanthus to Euboea, "which is the furthest of any place" and came back on the same day.[4]
They use the same teleporter as they use in Game of Thrones. ie its a plot device to stop the film stretching to 4 hours of useless time period where the characters move from one place to another.
2:14 It's unfair to be mad at Charlie's (The Marksman) inability to shoot since in the movie he has PTSD which makes sense why he couldn't bring himself to shoot. It is an interesting choice that they brought him along for the journey (in the writer's part), I personally liked the character.
I think the purpose of Charlie was just another means of showing Diana's compassion. Charlie had the choice to leave but stays simply because Diana complimented his singing.
@@tekkengod2120 Ares says something like "humans don't deserve to live" and then WW gives that reply. Basically even if humans deserve to be destroyed after horrible things they've done, she believes they're better than that
Osvaldo Correa ikrrr but I think doctor who is too complex to theorize about its just to convoluted and such a long running series with so many different writers and doctors which causes overlaps and Fallacies in the plot and cannon
7:08 Steve's not an idiot. He knew he wasn't making it the whole way to London on a tank of gas. Me in 2021 knowing that in the new Wonder Woman 84 movie, Steve spoiler spoiler spoiler a jet aircraft the whole way around the world and back on a tank of gas.
Maybe the island had an enchantment so that those leaving would get where they want to go after passing through the bubble. The gods are dead, but obviously magical enchantments still exist (the bubble concealing Themyscira). In addition, the island shifting position would explain how nobody found it after so long.
yeah i was thinking that it would kinda be like nonexistent in the real world and it would basically be able to go any where on earth so when you leave you can go where you need to
SuperPunMaster It's just my theory. A FILM THEORY! It's just a plausible theory that could explain the timeline of the movie, it's not necessarily true.
I like this idea a lot, but if Steve's crash range was still about the same, how quickly would the island have to 'shift' to actually get them near enough to England, not including geographical luck (to an extent) and the amount of weather disturbances that could cause (which you could chalk up to magic as well, I suppose, since there's literally a magical bubble) as the island would literally be leaving a vortex of air disturbances and water as the island dissapears or shifts or whatever it does. At best (as in, best for humanity's future) it'd maybe create some large waves or a whirlpool with the water. I'm not sure though. The wording's kinda important. I never read the comic, just watched the animated film when I was a kid, so I'm not sure whether Théo's comment was referring to 'shifting' or 'teleportation' as how it went down in the comic, but that would definitely effect how the movie turned out. Also, even with the idea of teleportation, unless we're going by the 'geographical will' theory comment the chances that they'd teleport close enough to England are slim, and if the island was shifting it'd have to be moving pretty fast since it's, well, a giant island and water resistance is still a thing. Idk there's a lot of holes in this, but I think this is my favorite counter-theory in the comments yet. Perhaps if we went off the idea of geographic will (so if they just exited the magical bubble and appeared at a magical coordinate or at a coordinate they consciously or subconsciously willed the magic to drop them off at) this would certainly be a plausible idea, though probably not the right one. So please add on your ideas!! And off topic from this idea, I'm pretty sure in the animated version the gods were Roman, and Diana is the roman goddess of the hunt as well as being greek I'm pretty sure. Correct me if I'm wrong though, since I'm running solely off of caffeine as I've been pulling all-nighters for school and really don't have the brain power to cross-reference the animation/comic/movie/mythology.
Mat I am a Greek my self, I don't know if you had ever been in Greece, but our islands are not even close to the climate of the island in the movie, my theory is that the island is something like the "LOST" series and teleports in time and space, mentioning that every single island of Greece in that period was habbitant. Please notice me senpai
@Pug money Geography doesnt change that quickly. It takes millions and millions of years for terrain to change significantly. Greece today looks basically the same it did during ancient greece
Diana is a Roman Goddess, the goddess of the moon and hunting. She is the equivalent Greek goddess Artemis. Diana wasn't a greek goddess xD I suppose since the Romans technically copied the Greek gods, Diana is essentially artemis, but still the statement made towards the beginning of the video is inaccurate. By the way Mat keep up the good work, love your vids, just thought I would leave some 'constructive criticism ' to correct the slight error made in the vid.
in this case i think he means Diana as in wonder woman, cause that's her real name. It's just coincidence that WW shares the name with the roman goddess
I only mentioned this because between the middle and beginning of the video, he said that her name was shared by a famous Greek goddess. However, I see where you are coming from. Thx for the feedback
1) Themyscira isn't in a static location. This is hard to understand - but it exists wherever the Gods want it to exist. 2) Movie obviously does a bad job of telling us, since they start off with "The Gods are Dead," but Diana, like other Demi-Gods, has the favor of the Gods wherever she goes. Poseidon would simply crack his knuckles and change the seas for her. And no. Ares did not kill Poseidon (as much as Hippolyta would like us to believe that).
Makes sense. Mat is possibly right when it comes to science and of the sort. But he didn't include Greek Mythology which totally changes everything. Of course Im not sure if it mentions stuff like that though. :/ Also your quote Croecho "since they start off with "The Gods are Dead," but Diana, like other Demi-Gods, has the favor of the Gods wherever she goes." " It makes no sense, the gods are dead yet she gets help by the gods. What does that mean? She has the powers of such?
Whether theories age well or not I love watching them because there was still time and effort and until proven wrong you usually do a great job at convincing me of your theories or if they’re proven correct or blows my mind because it’s all so well done
Reginald Asare like while she was sleeping? Or?? Also its been insinuated that Themyscira is located within the Devil’s Triangle.. and there are a few. Also there are indications in ww comics they were advanced with their ancient technology so maybe they developed their boats? Or a fun way they could have used would be to use the gods as a way to transport them from within the triangle to wherever it is they need to go. At least you can create your own theories out of that, that might make more sense

When you said "Greece-y" at 5:11 you put me so off kilter that every time you said Greece I interpreted it as grease for the rest of the episode. Dang it, MatPat.
Not even gonna touch on the fact that Doctor Poison was an ancestor of the Joker and the gas she planned to release was a beta version of Joker's gas. In one of the ending scenes we can see that when Doctor Poison's mask falls off and what looks like a joker smile. The first laughing gas was used in 1799 but wasn't used anytime in world war one. The director of wonder-woman herself describes her as someone "who has had all kinds of damage in her life". Mental diseases have been known to be hereditary; and that's most likely what Patty Jenkins meant when she said that. Since this movie is revealed to be a backstory, this could definitely be a relative to joker. Jack Napier is the jokers real name. Napier is a Scottish name. For a small amount of time there was an immigration from Scotland to Spain. Doctor poison is Spanish and could potentially be from Spanish and Scottish descent. The name was also very popular in New York, which is where Scottish and Irish Immigrants landed and stayed. Jokers fist name being jack is obviously an american name. My theory is that doctor poison's mom moved from scotland to spain and had two kids. One being poison and the other being a second child. This second child moved to america and married someone. The mental insanity transferred from The mom to her two daughters
Jack Napier is an alias, he has used many of them over the years and Jack Napier has actually never shown up completely in print only in the Tim Burton movie.
Chip Gaming Imahine if it truely was like joker gas and you just saw people laughing like crazy and you see a woman with really red hait whos uneffected POISON IVY HAS REACHED US!!!!!!
Matpat I agree, mostly my problem is that you just assumed that hey they got a tug boat, Steve never said tug boat he just said that they got a ride by a Ally(or in other words friend) nothing else but there is a boat that could get them there in 4 days and 9 hours the boat is RMS Mauretania the boat was first sent in 1906 and landed (somewhere) in 1907 that boat has enough time to get near Italy or Turkey. Or say be going to England. The script says nothing about a date so they could have been on sea for 4 days and 9 hours and just sleep in the same spot for that entire time(if that boat were to pull them the entire time ) the hours may vary depending on the speed the boat was traveling at. BTW you did A great job on this matpat and Ronnie awesome editing
shit jayce ph It still doesn't make sense since she should have known that they were helped if she didn't sleep for 4 straight days and therefore wouldn't have needed to be told so.
Mat, I've been a huge fan from the moment I watched my first Game Theory video and your channels have been my favorite UA-cam channels ever since. So I feel obligated to point out when you say something that might be wrong, always with the utmost respect (I don't understand how people get so nasty in the comments section). The Wright Brothers did not fly the first plane. A German called Gustave Whitehead was said to have done it two years prior, in 1901, using his own "airplane". But there's still controversy regarding him having done it, AND the Wright Brothers as well, for neither could be considered to have "planes" - their inventions were not up to the criteria stablished at the time, so, theoretically, they could not be considered planes, but gliders. If you use these criteria as defining, the Brazilian Alberto Santos Dummond was the one who did it, for his plane was the first to comply to all the criteria of the Federation Aéronautique International (FAI) as the world's first airplane. They stipulated the following: A) the flight should be done before an official organization, qualified to ratify it; B) the flight should be done in calm weather and over a plain ground, and properly documented; C) the machine should be able to take off from a designated area by its own means with a man on board; D) the machine should carry on board the necessary source of energy; E) the machine should fly in a straight line; F) the machine should make a change of direction (turn and circle); G) the machine should return to the starting point. The Wright Brothers' plane used a catapult to launch the plane and they didn't land where they took off, so they would be disqualified, as they didn't follow letters C and G. Therefore, they did not fly a plane. You can even say they invented Angry Birds, but they were not the first to fly a plane. Besides that, I think this is a nice theory! Don't let the rude people on the comments section get you down, you are an amazing man, we can clearly see how much heart you put in your content and it, for sure, makes a lot of people happy. Keep them coming! Still a huge fan, and waiting anxiously for the next Film Theory!
Nice. This is what the comments to MatPat videos used to and should be. A source of extra information incited by the contents of the video, regardless from whether it be a flaw or an expansion of a shortened description of a point in the theory. Done usually with respect but more than anything with a desire to provide information of a subject to other people. I loved reading this. Reminds me of older, better days in MatPat's channels.
Carolina Assaf id prefer if the Wright Brothers used a Glider. I love gliders much much more than plans. They are how you say much more majestic, gliding at the mercy of the wind than with massive engines. And their design is much cooler much more sleek and even more aerodynamic as it needs to be as they dont have the engine pulling them along
"Amazonian dancing..." She's been stranded on an island of drop-dead gorgeous women for hundreds of years... This could get */very/* interesting... XD lol
The whole point of the theorist community is that we overthink things. The first thing we want to do when he comes out with a theory is poke holes in it, because that's the fun part. He pokes holes in movies, we poke holes in his holes. That's what makes this community great. MatPat, we may constantly dissect your theories, but that just means they're good enough to merit our dissection. We love them and we love you! (in a strictly platonic way, of course)
This is my favorite kind of theory, the kind who’s subject is some unexpected and almost comedically absurd thing that is also oddly mundane and as so is used for fun factoids and important details of the real world and how it works. And because it’s almost laughably silly and absurd, you can enjoy the theory without feeling like the movie/game/series in question or the message of it is ruined.
I've read some of the comments and just want to point something out. To all those who say that Poseidon could have helped her travel, HE IS DEAD, the say that in the movie that basically all the gods except Zeus and Aries are dead
According to myths, the Amazonians grew their empire even outside of Greece and they also had a patron Goddess, Artemis who may have lended her powers to get them to London faster. This being said the Amazonians were known to frequently be provided with help from Artemis and their other patron God, Ares thanks to the works of Otera. And in a movie with unrealistic elements, it may not be a surprise that Greek Gods come into this, as they have been mentioned in the movie multiple times.
Yes, but there is no proof in the film that Wonder Woman wasn't named after the Roman form of their patron Goddess. It never implies or states that she is the same Diana as the myths.
Then they probably would've ended up somewhere farther away, and what leads you to believe that they even were able to make the barrier do that and why? The amazon explorers if there were any would get completely lost!!
Role Player *writer makes massive mistake*, *fan proceeds to assume somthing that was never stated, aluded too, refrenced or likely even considered by the writer, to be the answer to the writers error*. we all do it with our favorite things that end poorly.

Medival X I was just going to say that. It's a Superhero movie based on Greek and somewhat Roman Mythology. They have literal magic cups in mythology why not boats? I kinda feel that it would be implied that a pocket mythological community would have some magical mythological ways of travel.
What if the island exists beyond the mortal plain of reality and can be anywhere on earth at different times as it was used by the gods to house their protectors of humanity which means they are close to the biggest conflict in the world
Look, Im greek and all of your theories are true BUT Diana is roman not greek she is just connected with the greek gods for some reason. Anyway good vid.
No offense, and I apologize if this is offensive anyway, but aren't most Roman and Greek gods the same, just with different names? Like how the monotheistic religions all have "God", but the names like "Allah" and "YHWH" for Muslims and Jews respectively? Neptune=Poseidon, Mars=Ares etc...

Given they're taking a boat from an island filled with the chosen of a greek goddess, and there are plenty of magical artifacts on the island, I wouldn't be too surprised. Honestly I expected the boat to be magic, probably teleporting at some point.

A few things, first Zack only did the story not the script meaning it likely read something to the effect of Diana leaves Femescura with Steve and make their way back to London where...
Secondly it's never stated that it's a Brittish tug boat, it's possible that it was an allied ship that Steve talked into taking them or
It's possible he used the phrase tug boat because any ship taking them would've tugged them there and instead of explaining the differences between ships to Diana, a woman who knows practically nothing about the world he used tug boat as its pretty self explanatory.
Hope this is thoughtful and not condescending, love your work!
Maston Dane did you just call it FEMiscura
Gotta say, you spelt Themyscira wrong. Also, he never really took the time to oversimplify things later, and most of the time where he realizes how little she knows about the world comes after the boat ride. The allied boat in general thing may work out, but it still may take too much time, considering how slow the tugboat would be going. 14 knots ain't much to go 3300 miles.
Well, lets say best case scenario then. What was the fastest boat at the time?
Maston Dane Still would've taken time no matter what type of boat it is. Right?
In early 1900s
It doesn't say that in the movie therefore it didn't happen.
Marken Gamer a planes not a foot bruh
LOGIC/MOVIE MAGIC !!
1. It's not that no man is capable, but that no man is allowed.
2. The island moves according to its inhabitants' wishes, even moving through time.
Steve and his plane were the breaking point of the whole shield in the island. After he crashed, men came after him and discovered it. The scene where Diana saw the plane entering, it looked like it broke an invisible barrier

@@imashadow699 From memory in the comics the island pretty much just magically teleported from place to place. So it's theoretically possible - especially if you assume whatever force moves the island wanted Diana to succeed. But if that's the case the film *really* should have at least mentioned briefly that the island had this capability...
The movie didn’t establish that, though.

Yeah, but Diana is the Roman form of Artemis and the Greek gods we’re all killed by Ares in the beginning so they chose Diana, the roman goddess that pretty much copies Artemis, who is the leader of the hunt. I thought Themyscira is never in one location it was how they stayed hidden from Ares also why Diana may never find her way back home. although the pacing of the movie was off like i felt they cover a vast amount of ground on foot with like no time passing, the film could of used some more transitions to make it feel as time passed. also maybe magic boat?
its the crimean peninsula, the actor is slavic
Even if the island wasn't in the pinpointed coordinates, Steve did started his flight in Turkey, and that puts enough distance for both the plane and the boat.
See my comment. You don't need a magic boat when you have a magic island...
So the island can teleport in an instant and take them exactly to the point they need?
Ponera Grimoire Apparently not, otherwise they wouldn't need to sail overnight. However, it's possible that it periodically changes location (as part of the enchantment making it difficult to find) and was closer to London when they left it.
Diana's mother warns her that if she leaves the island she may never return. This could be an Amazonian rule of law or she could be referring to how difficult it would be to find it again...

This video is just what the true meaning of dancing is
The whole Greece thing isn't much to go on for location.
Actually in the Original plot its somewhere between the Aegean dude
the new thymyscyra isnt in Bermuda either but somewhere in MEDITERRANEAN obviously

Just a question, isn't Hercules Roman? Isn't Hercales the Greek alternative?
Themyscira is a constantly moving island. Which would explain why it's so hard or impossible for Diana to ever return to the island. The island wouldn't be in the same place it was when she left. Could the islands "mythical" movement (during Steve's capture and interrogation) put Diana closer to London at the time they left sailing? Therefore cutting travel time considerably. I'm really curious about this.
yes but if it were closer to London Steve's plane wouldn't have made it to Themyscira
could it have maybe moved closer to london ? idk i'm still w matpat but tryna give the benefit of the doubt
Doesn't change the fact that the plane would have to land near Themyscria 'somewhere' near Turkey. And from the video we see that the plane landed right on the very brim and edge of its zone of flight. That was the best possible outcuome.
Christopher Friday no, like, he landed on the island when he did while the island was by turkey and it moved super close to london
Christopher Friday *after he got on it - because "it knew" or because of fate/destiny or magic or something idk

True but if it were a magic boat then why did it take them a whole day and night to get to London it seams like it'd it were magic it would have taken less time. You know?
Well obviously you enter Themyscira via a wormhole, and when you leave said wormhole, you can be anywhere in the world... like London.
+Wandergirl108 They would be sailing 3,300 miles which would take a long time to sail in a Greek ship and that is counting if they even make it out the Mediterranean Sea Because as he said the ship could not change directions it would be more likely if they got stuck on the coast of Italy rather than get out of the Mediterranean Sea If the rare chance they did they would have enough food for the journey and even than they would have more chance of straying off course to London and even if they were on the right course that would have taken more than 2 weeks at best and I am going to trail back to the beginning saying they only have two people on this ship which I think would slow them down even more and to be fair we do not count the journey they took at all like if they were any storms or even tidal waves that prevented them
Wandergirl108 so you are saying steve was in turkey in a single day from london and then two weeks to sail to london from turkey
Wandergirl108
Actually that does make sense, I can see that.

Claireness Punkster that’s what I was thinking
Claireness Punkster ahh Hermes (or Kronos) always speeding things up
I was thinking the same, but you are 100% right. Steve should've been surprised at the sudden change of location.
spoiler:
All the gods are dead except Aries and as we later find out Diana. (at least that is what the "mother" and the other amazons say)
Claireness Punkster not to mention that by DCU canon (if this train wreck of a plot is indeed canon) the entire Greek pantheon is dead.
And when you REALLY know how the cinema industry works, the bashing becomes worst.
well... theories are true and fact in science after all, its a theory until it gets debunked, technically meaning all theories are true
On the other hand
Bringing up how unlikely it was they would find a tugboat to get a ride from....
while for the purposes of the theory, completely irrelevant, as the fact that it could have (unlikely but possible) and is shown it did happen, so no impact what so ever.
as an excuse to bring up more interesting stuff like:
what kind of speeds and numbers are we talking about with boats from that era?
Stuff like that, that's nice
MatPat you forgot that the possibility that they might be mythical ships. The Phaeacians in the Odyssey had ships from the gods that could go anywhere in one day! If that were the case this would be possible. :)
QUOTE WIKIPEDIA:
The Phaeacians possessed remarkable ships. They were quite different from the penteconters, the ships used during the Trojan War, and they were steered by thought. King Alcinous says that Phaeacians carried Rhadamanthus to Euboea, "which is the furthest of any place" and came back on the same day.[4]
There is a comment battle above about the "mythical" ship
It's not a magic ship. It's a magic island. Themyscira has the ability to teleport to any location or time period its inhabitants desire.
That would be pretty clever, though Snyder should have communicated such a possibility better in the movie.
They use the same teleporter as they use in Game of Thrones. ie its a plot device to stop the film stretching to 4 hours of useless time period where the characters move from one place to another.
cgarrand08 steve already said there was a tugboat so no that aint it
Matpat: And even her real world name Diana is a reference to one of the most famous Greek goddesses.

2:14 It's unfair to be mad at Charlie's (The Marksman) inability to shoot since in the movie he has PTSD which makes sense why he couldn't bring himself to shoot. It is an interesting choice that they brought him along for the journey (in the writer's part), I personally liked the character.
MatPat seems really passive aggressive against the movie from what i can see.
HDcoded DSG it's a half assed film unfortunately
HDcoded DSG He's not mad at the marksman guy, he's mad that they didn't give him any character arc.
I agree HDcoded DSG
I think the purpose of Charlie was just another means of showing Diana's compassion. Charlie had the choice to leave but stays simply because Diana complimented his singing.

Maybe the island had an enchantment so that those leaving would get where they want to go after passing through the bubble. The gods are dead, but obviously magical enchantments still exist (the bubble concealing Themyscira). In addition, the island shifting position would explain how nobody found it after so long.
yeah i was thinking that it would kinda be like nonexistent in the real world and it would basically be able to go any where on earth so when you leave you can go where you need to
If I don't mistaken, it's the same thing in the comics.
Cybertronian that'd be very similar to Calypso's island from the mythology
But...... Diana is a roman version of Artemis
Ikr it’s weird that she’s Greek not Roman
I thought Diana was Athena
Sillysaurus YT Minerva is Athena.

He had proof to debunk your theory
In the movie the climate outside of the island's border was very much different from the inside

Diana is a Roman Goddess, the goddess of the moon and hunting. She is the equivalent Greek goddess Artemis. Diana wasn't a greek goddess xD
I suppose since the Romans technically copied the Greek gods, Diana is essentially artemis, but still the statement made towards the beginning of the video is inaccurate.

Logan Smith Cool.
Thanks for the view :>
You're edgy
1) Themyscira isn't in a static location. This is hard to understand - but it exists wherever the Gods want it to exist.
2) Movie obviously does a bad job of telling us, since they start off with "The Gods are Dead," but Diana, like other Demi-Gods, has the favor of the Gods wherever she goes. Poseidon would simply crack his knuckles and change the seas for her. And no. Ares did not kill Poseidon (as much as Hippolyta would like us to believe that).
At the beginning it says that Ares killed Poseidon in the DCEU, not in other universes.
Makes sense. Mat is possibly right when it comes to science and of the sort. But he didn't include Greek Mythology which totally changes everything. Of course Im not sure if it mentions stuff like that though. :/
Also your quote Croecho "since they start off with "The Gods are Dead," but Diana, like other Demi-Gods, has the favor of the Gods wherever she goes." " It makes no sense, the gods are dead yet she gets help by the gods. What does that mean? She has the powers of such?
Whether theories age well or not I love watching them because there was still time and effort and until proven wrong you usually do a great job at convincing me of your theories or if they’re proven correct or blows my mind because it’s all so well done

You forgot one more best case scenario, Daina been a half god or god magically helped them reach London in time
Reginald Asare like while she was sleeping?

Yeah cus aparently wonder woman slept for 4 whole days because that's the only reason I can think of for why she didn't know that they were helped.
101Andu101 he didnt say diana slept for 4 days, he said diana mustve slept in the same position in 4 days lmao
shit jayce ph It still doesn't make sense since she should have known that they were helped if she didn't sleep for 4 straight days and therefore wouldn't have needed to be told so.
Mad respect for doing all that research

They stipulated the following:
A) the flight should be done before an official organization, qualified to ratify it; B) the flight should be done in calm weather and over a plain ground, and properly documented; C) the machine should be able to take off from a designated area by its own means with a man on board; D) the machine should carry on board the necessary source of energy; E) the machine should fly in a straight line; F) the machine should make a change of direction (turn and circle); G) the machine should return to the starting point.
So it's their fault that I raged so badly playing Angry Birds. Damn Wright Brothers... xDD
Nice trivia but this isn't the topic. I'm pretty sure Mat knows about this already.
It might of failed us but it's still one of the best DC movie so far

His works aren't. Case dismissed.
And in a movie with unrealistic elements, it may not be a surprise that Greek Gods come into this, as they have been mentioned in the movie multiple times.
you know that artemis is diana, right?
Yes, but there is no proof in the film that Wonder Woman wasn't named after the Roman form of their patron Goddess. It never implies or states that she is the same Diana as the myths.
supposedly all the other gods were killed my ares
Wasn't all the gods killed by Ares?
aditi bhuvanesh Artemis was the hunters
Maybe the barrier protecting Themyscira is actually a one-way magical portal that allows anyone leaving Themyscira to appear anywhere in the world?
thay do have a motherbox
Role Player that's what I believe cuz it's impossible to get to London that fast

If they have magical equipment like swords and shields why can't they have magical boats
I was actually thinking the same thing.
Lol yeah
Medival X I was just going to say that. It's a Superhero movie based on Greek and somewhat Roman Mythology. They have literal magic cups in mythology why not boats? I kinda feel that it would be implied that a pocket mythological community would have some magical mythological ways of travel.
The whole video I just kept muttering: Its a magic boat. Its a magic boat. ITS A MAGIC BOAT. [itsamagicboat]
