I have a suggestion you may not have thought of for your digital tachometer. Have you seen the silver metallic duct sealing tape? You could have a lifetime supply of reflective strips just buying one roll and cutting it up. Just a thought.

Nice video. Not half an hour ago I used that Innova 3320 to trace down a solder joint that came loose inside a relay for a hydraulic lift table. It seems like it will be a good beginner meter.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the videos!!... I have some questions, if it's possible to make them here. I have a table saw with a baldor pl3515m that I think I pushed to hard... This would be an induction motor right? Well it doesn't start... I tried the thermal reset, nothing... I've checked the capacitors, and power is getting to them (high voltaje wiring, 230v), could it be the coil burnt out? What would be a set of checking steps?... TIA!!
Jeremy, there is reason for these questions I keep asking. This is how I learn. Anyway, when I bought this old Delta/Rockwell it had a 3/4 hp Dayton motor on it. It has 4 step cones on motor & spindle for speed change. I have read or told there was no way to change this procedure because of the motor except with extra pulleys. I was checking to see if there was a way to make it variable speed like adding a VFD. Is there a way to add a VFD to this motor. I tried to add a picture of the information tag on motor but iPhone doesn’t seem to like this.

hey Jeremy! i recently got an antique 9" general electric oscillating fan c.1917. the catalogue number is 174942. It is a 110volt 25cycle fan. doing some research i have found out that niagara falls produced 25hz power to new york and ontario. i have found an original catalogue that describes this fan of having a "series commutator". is it safe/ok to power this fan with standard 110v 60hz? if not what would be a good non invasive way to power the fan? thank you.
If I'm looking for a 3hp motor 220V that I can use with a VFD for a 2 x 72 sander, what items that people get rid of might have that motor that I can upcycle?
That is not common at all. Once you go past 1 hp you are buying used or new. If you use a motor like that you often know it is worth something. Or you go to a auction like I did where some warehouse is clearing out stuff. You still buy it but for almost nothing.

I have a puzzling question: My husband saw this 25hp compressor motor. It can run on both 240V 3ph to 480V 3ph by just switching some wires under the cover plate as instructed. Heya Jeremy. I am STUCK! I am a physics and Engineering teacher with an engineering education, I work with a civil engineer, and I am lost on one thing. I recently pulled the spindle drive motor out of an old benchtop CNC mill that was no longer viable, and it has 3 wires....what the heck! After watching a bunch of your videos on motors and doing a fair bit of reading, I can run the thing. The three leads are red, green and black, and if I connect the red and green to power it will run (at voltages ranging from 12 to 30 from what I ahve tried so far) but the black lead baffles me, it seems to have no function. Any thoughts?
Usually there is a ground wire. Watch the how motors work question and answer video. There is a link with more information. Different manufacturers use different colors sometimes. I am not giving advice however. There are just too many ways I could be wrong.

Important! Some single phase induction motors have only 3 wires for unreversable motors and some 3 phase motors that are wired in star or Y configuration often have 4 wires for an added neutral also some single phase motors have resistance start motors so no capacitor is needed

I need some help... My kids had a hoverboard they broke. I still scavenged the hub motors out of it and plan to make a sort of go-kart. I don't know much about motor controllers. As cheap as possible, I need controllers that will brake the wheels and have reverse. I want them to function just as they did on the hoverboard. Funding is a big issue! So any ideas would be great... Oh they ran off 36 volt dc but are 3 phase (assuming AC) and have a hall sensor. Are 3 phase DC motors even a thing?
I don't usually answer technical questions because the volume is simply insane. I just can't help everyone... but I will say this is more commonly called "brushless DC motor" you need a controller for that. Sometimes people call them AC motors but they are kind of both in a weird way.
@@JeremyFieldingSr that's the same conclusion I came up with. My issue is that I don't enough about controllers to filter through the mountains of them looking for one that will let them function the way they do on the hoverboard.

Have you ever tried to repurpose an electric fan motor? I've been planning to make a compost sifting trommel for my garden, and I was wondering just how powerful a motor I'll need. I have some old 3 speed box fan motors and the trommel only needs to rotate at between 25 to 32 r.p.m. I've seen some pretty small motors do some pretty heavy duty jobs, so I'm thinking It's just a matter of getting the gearing right. I most likely won't be needing to rotate more than 20 pounds at once, but continually. My biggest problem is likely to be dust control. That little blender motor of yours looks awesome. Are the bearings still good? Why isn't it still in a blender? Did you only take it out for the video? My son brought home an Oster blender that works, but the bearings just shriek and scream! Your motor looks the same. I'm still waiting for new bearings to come in for his motor. I suspect that after I fix it he'll sell it on Ebay or something. Oh well.
The coupling that held the blades on broke off. It was made of rubber and there was no good way to replace it. So, I started using the motor in videos like this as an example of a universal motor.
Fans are usually induction motors with different taps for different speeds. The problem is the starting torque. Especially if it is a shaded pole induction motor. They have almost none. You would have to push it each time if you could get it to run. A fan requires almost no torque to start the blades moving... therefore companies save money by not solving that "low starting torque" problem. Okay, ty. Wow, you got back to me faster than I thought you would. Push start, huh? I'm not sure that's going to work then. If somebody borrows it, that's the kind of detail that gets overlooked, even if labeled. BTW, those rubber connectors can be ordered online. They're not terribly pricey.

Great question. I have no idea. I usually go for trial and error until I think its behavior is usual. But I can’t recommend that in a video
There are a few more things that can be done but in the end the more information you start with, the easier it is to search for the rest
Hey brother I have a problem I have a 6 wire washing machine motor no one has this weird thing anywhere it was built in Mexico here's the info hope I got enough info the series number is S68PXMTM-1904 it's a 1/2 up 120v 60HZ 8.5/7.6 amps 1725/1140 RPM class F oh and it says pin 6 35-6671has a spot says AMB idk I hope you can help me and this ain't one of those matters that I'm stuck with a heavy bulky paper weight thanks either way sir
Have you salvaged many dishwashers? How do their components vary from washing machines?
I have done three dish washers... the motors are very small, less than 1/3 hp. There aren't really any components I would keep accept the capacitor for the motor and the large springs in the door. Specifically because I have a idea of what I want to do with the springs. Even the wire is a very small gauge wire not worth keeping for my projects.
That is disappointing. I know of someone calling himself BamZipPow that used dishwasher components to clean out the carbon in his catalytic converter instead of spending several hundred or a thousand on a new one, but that is one very specific use, and I doubt many people would want to try it.

Yes... someone doing electrical work clearly needs a nice meter. It is the center of all your projects... for me it is a tool that occasionally finds itself on my bench for brief periods... then out of the way so building can continue.
Jeremy Fielding actually I use a cheap but good meter called aneng an 8008 it's under $20 on banggood or eBay. It works great but I would not trust it with higher voltages. I have used it on 120 volts but I would rather use a UL listed meter for anything over 70 volts. But for the day to day stuff I do it works great.
What do you use "hertz" for? I suspect it could be used to measure motor speeds if one were clever enough, or the frequency of a 555 circuit?

You most likely need new brushes
see i installed one tread mill motor on my grinder and it burned off the brushes,so bought another one and its doing the same thing,,i built a speed controler for it ,you thing that's causing it and how do i test the motor to see if its good?
+edgar alejandre I try not to get into troubleshooting like this. It is not safe nor practical. I can’t handle the volume of requests I get like this. And I can’t be sure you are giving all the relevant facts or even that I understand your problem correctly. I have a large number of videos on motors and I think you will find something helpful if you watch the how motors work series. At least the DC one. It will help you see which part of the behavior is unusual and maybe point you in the right direction.
Help, I'm hoping you see this. I have a craftsman bench top drill press. The motor is either 1/3 0r 1/2 hp. The unit is better than 20 years old but looks new. I was using it to drill a lot of small holes, .076 dia. About half way through the motor changed tone, slowed down and acted in a bind. I disconnected belt,isolated the otor, flipped the switch and I had to spin the motor by hand to get it going. It was turning slow, as if it was under load but there was no load. The motor is clean and I saw no viable signs of any internal damage. I also noticed when I turned it off that a lamp plugged into the same socket got brighter leading me to believe it's drawing to much currant, or amps. I'm thinking capacitor, any ideas. I called sears to check on parts cost and availibility, the motor is no longer available, termed obsolete. I know it can be fixed and I would hate to scrap the little unit, it's been a great machine.
Sounds like a capacitor. But of course that is a guess only based on what you have presented here. Thank you so much, you have given me a place to start. In another of your videos where you introduce yourself, I gave a quick rundown on myself. Our fields are not that far apart. I have little electric experiance but I'm concidered tops in closed loop hydraulic systems, a bunch of platforms in the Gulf know me. It is an interesting world out there and I can't wait until I'm able to return to work, until then my little wood craft shop helps me keep busy. Again, thank you. That's 2 electrical units I'm working on, the other is easy, a dewalt 12" dbl bevel miter saw. Just needs brushes.
Now the fun begins, if it is the capacitor, I'll have to see about locating one. This town ain't very big, LOL

I did go pick up the little 8" from harbor freight so I could keep going and the lead time is fairly long to receive it through mail. At least this way, when something goes wrong, I'll have a spare.

Do you know much about lawn mowers? I just fixed my mom's electric lawn mower and tried to fix her gas one. Reel mowers seem great right now.

I doubt it would take you long to figure out all of them! :) I do not have any idea about "good" lawnmowers, but you get what you pay for. Most people want cheap mowers and they only last a couple of years. I fix my own cars, but lawn mowers use backwards technology older than any car I have owned. Carburators? What? Why?
When a gas mower simply dies, an electric mower dies, but blows the bridge rectifier, and the circuit breaker, but electric mowers are far simpler and a bit quieter.
The EPA limits new gas mower pollution to four times that of a new car, which is a huge number, considering the engine is only 5-10% as big.
Power cords are huge hassles, though, and rechargeable mowers cost twice as much for degrading technology.
Many people say reel mowers are only great until you use one.
I was a licensed Master Electrician for 45 years, so when I say great videos, and well taught, you know I mean it.. But, perhaps to much information for most “shade tree” inventors
If you are interested in a good motors book : My community college instructor used an Audel book : Electric Motors by Edwin P. Anderson, 2nd edition 1975, Library of Congress # 67-30984. It's > 400 pages, comprehensive. I just found 11 books from $4 to $30, several were 4th editions.

I have not tried troubleshoot because I have a second meter LOL. I agree it might just be a loose wire or something. I have not checked.

A buddy of mine just gave me a DC motor but I have no clue what size it is there’s no writings it looks like a brand new motor out of the box there’s no wires coming out of it just a stud anybody have any ideas I don’t know how to send pictures
