- Episode #281 : Season 9 : The South Pacific
Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way for the legendary "Bloody Mary's" bar and then explore the stunningly beautiful Matira Beach. After a few days on a mooring ball riding out the weather we slip the lines and sail off the ball through the mooring field.

I think I speak for most landlubbers dreaming of solo sailing the seven seas. You are an inspiration.
🙏🏻
Amen 😊
Beautiful clear blue water, powder white sands, and a nice breeze, what more could you ask for? Thanks for sharing James! May fair winds be with you!🌬⛵
Those water colors are enough to make me list all my trivial possessions for sale. Aint getting any younger and boats aint getting cheaper.
Man … I actually did that when I was living in Vancouver. Got sick of the rat race, I just walked away from my life and went to live on Oahu
"Living the Dream" Very lucky!
You have become the most interesting man on UA-cam. Have loved being along for the ride since the beginning. Fair winds
🙏🏻
Bora bora to raitea to moorea, that was the best trip I ever been on. French poly is so beautiful.
Loving your journey. Loving your perseverance. Keep it up
And by the way. Thanks for not overproducing your intro. It's calm and repeatable. So many channels beat you over the head with their sweet productions skills. I like that you keep it simple. It's one intro I don't skip. Well, it's the only one. Thanks!
Thanks 👍🏻 they are a necessary evil for people new to the channel but I tried to make my as minimal as possible
Completely agree on this one. I find myself raising my mug of coffee and cheersing James when he raises his mug on the dinghy. ☕️
Omg never stop sharing ❤ god please let my life manifest into something even close to this!!!
Tremendous! Thanks, Captain James.
Spectacular scenery……..must be paradise !!!
I could spend a year exploring those islands. Thanks
And its not stupid, its a genuine expression of peace of heart/mind and joy of living!
Watching you I look down and I am wearing my Catalina Island shirt also ! Fair winds and following seas my friend
Great soundtrack on this one!!! 👍
Another winner. Staying tuned for the next episode!
This man is a very gnarly guy. Stay great King! Clearly serving your purpose and thanks for including us and the work you do behind the scenes. Blessings man
I’m loving what you’re putting down.
Hi James, you are going to really love American Samoa Pago Pago , out of all Pacific Islands, I think it is the most pictures of I ever seen , Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🏝️
Really enjoy the scenes with no other sound but the peaceful sails and water. It’s what I enjoy most of all as it relaxes & makes me want to come back again & again to your channel
I am almost as old as your boat lol but I have enjoyed watching every episode and getting to see all these special places. I love your videos and I hope your never stop sailing. Thank you so much for your story and it is a inspiration to many of us.
No plans to ever stop sailing ⛵️
Another beautiful video. Why would you want to leave. Lol
Stay safe and happy sailing ⛵️
Thanks James for the coverage very nice
Great job, brotha!
James, you produce the best videos, love watching, thanx 👍🥰

Great lines on Tritea!!!
Hell yeah Dude...!! I'm single handing as well. Perhaps we shall navigate in close proximity one day.... DO NOT COMPLY... SAIL ALONE. LIVE FREE... 💙🙏💙
I'm living vicariously through you ❤️ I'm terrified of the ocean but yet fascinated with it
Thank you for sharing ❤
These videos are so uplifting to me. I live in cold dark and seemingly always cloudy place. Not much for me to look forward to these days.
Stay hopeful. One day at a time. ❤
I very like your video for helping me to enjoy sailing dream and wish you safety on rough ocean🎉❤
man I love exploring on my bike and that sailboat is just a bike that takes you across the seas. Thanks for sharing!
Another fine job Captain James
Fantastic video! So amazing to see these beautiful islands. Thank you, James. 😎❤️😎❤️😎
Great video! Thanks!
Good one! Thanks.
Couldn't miss this one. Been probably 40 years since I was in Bora Bora, but it's a place you never forget. Although I lived in Hawaii at different times in my life (also beautiful), Bora Bora had a uniquely intense beauty. Don't remember a Bloody Mary's; assume it wasn't there back then. There was very little there actually. Stayed at a place owned by Jack Nicholson the 1st night. Three modern attached bungalows. Other 2 owned by other movie people. Stayed at the only tourist accommodations after that. Thatched bungalows on stilts in the bay. Incredible snorkeling right out our door. The owner was a bit of a misogynistic jerk, always stressed because his "workers" really weren't into working which I thought was fabulous. They needed a boss like a hole in the head! One day I'll have to dig out my slides if they haven't rotted away. This has inspired me. Hope the projector still works! Sail on! We're coming along for the adventure.
James, 'living in a post card', fair play to you, living the dream. Keep up the beautiful videos, David
That water is AMAZING!!!
Thanks James
Super filming James 100%.
Big fan of this channel ❤.
Awesome!
Another great day in French Polynesia!
James… still loving your voyage.
Big fan of the more ‘real’ sailing channels… you, Wind Hippie, Sailing Brothers, Florence.
There is something inexplicable you bring to your descriptions of the places you visit. I guess it’s your love of the places you visit comes over in your descriptions.
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Awesome! Keep the content coming.
My new favourite channel
I has to stop this video halfway through, & wasnt able to wish you a Happy Valentines Day , so heres a belated wish for one. I guess my valentine was my cat, seeing how that is her name. Wherever you are , always hoping you're safe & content. What an amazingly beautiful place ! Who wouldnt want to live in a Postcard? I keep thinking how rough those islands must get in a hurricane, I think I might dig some underground shelter, not that it would save much, just- me. It looks like its an off day, everywhere you went, there didnt seem to be that many people which is nice ! Looking forward to seeing your last day there. Thank you.
I hope you and your kitty had a lovely Valentine’s Day ! I was riding out the last day of the cyclone here in NZ safe and sound in a slip. I would not want to be on any island in the South Pacific during a cyclone 😬
You made Bora Bora seem to be a beautiful place. The only place the sea looks like the same 40 shades of blue as there is in Eleuthera Bahamas, so I hope you go and tape there as well.
Awesome love the videos 👍🍻
stay safe out there man!!!
We absolutely LOVE Bloody Mary’s! Was going to ask if you went into the restroom! 🤣🤣 They will have a freshly caught fish spread..where you pick what you want for dinner! Thanks Moana…..the people are all cool and will go above and beyond! 🤙
Bora Bora is incredible
Absolutely gorgeous. Makes me want to get my boat (a Hunter 33) ready, cast off, and don't look back. However, I'd have a good bit of work and prepping to do, she's been sitting and in need of attention.
Fair winds and following seas.
Hi James thank you again for another great adventure!! So incredibly beautiful and you always make me laugh! Thank you 💜
Thank you 🙏🏻
Also, when we were there, very expensive... (vs. other places)
9:05 Pat Tillman! Man, RIP.
Excellent episode!
Thanks brother !
Great video, glad you got to experience Bloody Mary's! Definitely one of the most unique restaurants I've been to. I wish I could remember what I had for dinner, never had it again anywhere, some sort of crustacean that was similar to lobster but looked very different.
For The Dream!!! 🤙
Keep on!
Now I need to go to Bora Bora! The tourist board there should be sponsoring this episode. 😂You sold me. 🎉
It is stunningly beautiful!!!!
Brilllllliant Beach ⛱️
just great you are very lucky
Badass!
OMG that water
Grazie James mi fanno proprio sognare un abbraccio da Giovanni Italy
I am hoping to see a panorama shot of Bora Bora and its iconic flat top peak.
Edcellent thank’s a lot
James, try not to store your aux rudder for your hydrovane laying down like this. Especially in the sun. I did that and mine picked up a nasty bend that I cant straighten. Those are very expensive.
Surprised how empty some of those places ( resort ) on the beach were. Very beautiful there.
It was shockingly empty
Thanks from Sydney for your updates .I think you are still in Russell & hope safe from the storms.
Yes made it through the storm all good in a slip in Opua
@@SailorJames Good news , are you coming our way ?
Great vids....one question, do you ever get lonely?
I have such a dream🐟
That really wasn't 'sailing off the mooring', it was more as Woody would describe Buzz Light Year, as 'falling off the mooring with style'.
To sail off the mooring use the main sail. Short tacks to port and starboard of the ball allows you to 'sail on up to the ball' where, getting it right, there ends up being no tension on the line to the ball and close to it, which is untied and brought smartly aboard as the boat sails past the ball to windward on which ever tack was 'the right tack' to leave on.
What you did was how ever you got the boat close enough to the ball to release enough tension to free off the line to the ball, and then allowed the boat to fall off the ball without any control or drive [since there was no engine and no sails set at this time - there was no drive and no steerage - so you didn't 'sail off the mooring' you fell ], where you then hauled out some of the Genoa. The Genoa caught some wind, took the head of the boat off the wind and provided some drive to 'sail the boat'. Such a small bit of Genoa out wasn't really sailing, the Genoa was more of a weather cock to blow the head of the boat off the wind.
This is why its worth practicing 'sailing off the mooring' because it takes some skill and judgement to get right. In your case, how you did it, you got it 100% 'correct' first time with no practice because it wasn't sailing off the mooring, it was falling off it.
To know that you've sailed off the mooring, using sails alone, you should be able to leave the ball from a standing start and be up wind of the ball in a few minutes without having gone downwind first to gain speed and set the sails. Set the sail [mainsail alone] before you even begin to leave.
Relax on the mansplaining there partner
I’m starring at 3 feet of snow in north idaho pretending I’m island hoping.
I am so jelouse, James wish I was there.
Where do you find the info on the moorings?
Do any cruisers bring backpacking backpacks and camp out on the beaches or have you seen something similar before?
Most sailors, including myself, would not leave their boat unattended under anchor at night because if it started dragging it’s an easy way to lose your boat…. Also my comfy bed vs. sleeping on the ground staring at my boat that has my comfy bed has no appeal 😂
I saw Tommy Lee's name at the Bloody Mary wall.
Bloody Mary’s reminds me of Mama’s Seafood in Maui.
That’s a great Australian drink u have there!
I love them
Try the full range when you reach Australia… especially the ginger beer and lemon lime and bitters…
Did someone say Bloody Mary Bar?Well if Jimmy Buffet's been there-then I guess it's good for me! haha
Hey James amazing vid as always
Are you still in NZ ? Hope you missed the cyclone
We were hit by the cyclone but were safely tied up in a slip
fantastic planing but why not collect some of the rain water???
Good stuff James.. Always a chicken in the background
🐔
I hope you’re all safe and well James, given the weather that’s currently smashing the South Pacific. Are you still in NZ. Hopefully at safe anchor somewhere.
I rode out the cyclone safely in a slip in NZ
I have never seen Bloody Marys that empty...
Living the life I want to live, but can't right now. Love your channel! Do you get lonely?
I get more lonely in port than at sea
how long is your yacht?
Are you going to sail to Thailand and India?
My fave thing is when a sailor interacts with another human-you never seem to be interacting with other humans…
I’m learning HEAPS frm you re sailing..
But, I DO look forward to seeing your interactions with CULTURE an the peoples that belong to those islands
There are plenty of other channels that do exactly what you are describing. Not everyone has to do the same thing. I am interested in beautiful places, history and wild creatures. Not that interested in humans.
How did you survive the storms in NZ this week
Hope all is well
Safely tied up in a slip at Opua , wild storm , filmed the whole experience
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL CAPTAIN JAMES!!!
I WISH YOU WERE STAYING IN RAIATEA, TAHAA, BORA BORA AND HUAHINE AREA..YOU EMANATE A JOY AND LOVE IN THESE WATERS!!!
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, YOUR STRENGTH AND LIFE I ADMIRE AND APPRECIATE IN A MASSIVE WAY😍😁
THANKYOU❤️
🌈🌎🛡️🛡️
Thank you 🙏🏻
Hope you are ok in NZ at the moment
All good 👍🏻
Looking forward to American Samoa. We don't see any cruiser videos from there, new ground.
It’s a terrible place to visit for cruising boats so it makes sense that there aren’t more videos
@@SailorJames Why terrible? Let's see if your perceptions plays out. Or are you already there?
