    MY QUESTION IS THIS , WHY DO THEY MAKE A ST12060 AND A ST10060 IF IT'S BASICALLY IDENTICAL ? IS THERE A DIFFERENCE OTHER THAN THE NUMBER ? IF SO , I CAN'T FIND IT .

      I think there is a difference in the bypass valve rating between the two filters, and the 10060 opens up faster. In other words, there is a difference in the pressure at which the bypass valve starts to open, even though there is no outside difference in the filter size/fit. You obviously want as much oil pressure ASAP when the engine starts up, and you also want to go into bypass mode if the filter starts to clog up to keep the oil pressure up. But, if the bypass valve rating is too low, it may open up too often, bypassing the useful filter media. Back in 2019 Fram came out with a TSB clarifying that some GM vehicles need the 10060, while others need the 12060. In other words, the two filters are NOT interchangeable. To be safe, use the filter that was designed for your vehicle, not just one that fits.

      I'm sure some filters are better than others. But one should change their oil at proper intervals anyway. I'm going to change my daughter's oil in her Honda Odyssey today,and I have the white filter to put on. I would've bought a little better of a filter,but her oil gets changed regularly by me. And money is really tight,so this supertech filter is going to have to do for now. What kind of oil does everybody use here? Walmart was out of the Mobil brand oil,so I bought Valvoline High mileage oil for her van. Someone once told me they don't mix oil brands,since they have differing detergents and additives can make the oil foam up inside the engine. I've never heard of such crap.

      The 6607 has a small actual filtering surface inside of it., I used to buy the supertech MP7317 which has the same threaded boss but a little more filter surface though its 2 dollars more. Now using the purolator gold. Its got more and better filter material inside it than either ST Product. A shame these filter companys make this little crap considering how important it is to have plenty of clean filtered oil. The purolator Gold and SuperTech MP7317 both cost around $6.00 Ill buy the Purolator!

    Best information says new white paint can ST (topic made 5/21) replaced previous blue can color ST when Super Tech introduced the 20k mi MP series filter with "blue" color can. As you note, other than paint, ST the same. Obviously WM wanted 'a very easy way' to differentiate the two filters, white(ST) vs blue(MP). One reason, filter swapping in boxes has been known to happen at WM by low lifes. Can color would make it easy to identify, though I doubt most WM employees would know this. Imo, only difference between topic ST and MP series is blue silicone adbv added to MP series. I'd say both ST and MP seem worth the cost. Thanks for comparison.

    I'm curious to know if the filter media between the two filters that you reviewed have different characteristics for total dirt capacity and particle size trapping ability, but I don't have any simple ideas for testing it. Can anybody out there think of a simple way to better characterize the filter media without having a well equipped laboratory? Burn it slowly with a torch, and see how it melts, to see if it is mostly plastic? Simply measuring its width with a micrometer doesn't seem like a complete test.
    As a side note, those specific 6607 filters that you cut open fit on most every Nissan out there, even the big V-8 Titans. I've always found it strange that the big Titans use the same dinky filter as the much smaller Nissan Sentra four cylinder engines. I'm sure that helps Nissan reduce unique parts for their warehouses, but at what cost? Toyota, GM, and Chrysler definitely use oil filters of various sizes to match different engine sizes, but not Nissan. But WHY??? Perhaps the filter media in those 6607 oil filters is overkill for the little Sentras, and barely marginal for the V8 Titans? That would be my guess.
    Don't underestimate the complex characteristics of the filter media. There is likely a whole lot more to it than just the width. It's my understanding that the cheap cellulose filters trap smaller particles, but have to be changed more often than the more expensive synthetic filters, which don't trap the smaller particles as well, but supposedly hold more total grime. I'm guessing that one of those 6607 oil filters can last a lot longer in a small Sentra than it does in a big Titan, and if I'm right that suggests there is a lot of variance in the useful life of these filters, depending on what vehicle they are installed. So, it is not so easy to say that one filter lasts 10,000 miles, and another lasts 20,000 miles, because it all depends on the specific vehicle they are installed, the type of driving you do, type of oil used, and the filtration ability that you desire. If you're the type of person who only wants to change his oil once a year, and doesn't care about filtration ability, then by all means use one of the expensive synthetic filters. (and keep your oil topped off between changes!)
    In other words, you can't really say that the two filters in your video are identical unless you can better characterize the filter media flow rate and particle trapping ability.
    Regardless of what filter you use, it seems to me that a magnetic drain plug is also a good idea, because it can trap tiny metal particles that may be too small for any filter to catch.
    If you want an idea for a new video, you could discuss engine oil life, as displayed by the car's computer. A lot of people don't understand that. They think that the engine oil life is the same thing as the engine oil level, and it's not. (BMW is one of the few cars I've seen out there that tells you what the actual oil LEVEL is) Many of the newer cars have looser fitting piston rings to improve MPG, which causes them to consume more oil per mile. A lot of newer cars also have larger crankcase capacities to compensate for the extra oil consumption, which raises the cost of an oil change. For example, most of the newer GM V8's use 8 quarts, whereas they used to only use 6 quarts.
    The new arrival of 0W16 oils is also worth discussing. Surely the oil filter media behaves differently with the newer 0W16 than it does with the old classic 5W30. I wonder how the thinner oils impact oil filter life and filtration ability? I never gave it much thought before, but it's probably an important topic. I would assume the thinner oils don't protect the engine as well, and produce more wear particles, which ultimately reduces the useful life of the oil filter? Whatever the case, it seems ridiculous for any oil filter manufacture to claim that one filter can last 10,000 miles, while another can last 20,000 miles. There are just too many variables involved to make such a claim!
    Keep up with the good thought provoking videos....

      My frointer actually calls for the 7317 for fram.. Suppertech through me off with the 6607 , I was a bit confused about the smaller size.. My last oil change on the frontier I used supertech ST9688. It worked out fine. It's wider than the 7317, but but not as tall. They all have 20mmx1.5mm threads. I liked the Now that supertech has the MP7317 likey just use that .

    • @Jay_Dahl
      @Jay_Dahl 2 роки тому +2

      @@minguss2 You can use whatever filter you want, but if you go to a professional oil change place, to be practical they have a limited selection of filters. I don't remember what the exact numbers are, but having something like 15 different filters on hand covers about 95% of the domestic and Asian cars. In other words, there may be bigger and better filters that fit on your Frontier, but there is a good chance you're not going to get one if you get a professional oil change.
      You also have to be careful about the tension of the bypass valve and drainback valves inside the filter. Sometimes one of the numbers is stamped inside. Buy a name brand filter and follow the oil filter manufacture's recommendations. A given filter may fit on your vehicle just fine, but if it starts to get clogged up, at what pressure will the bypass valve start to open? And how much oil pressure is lost due to the drainback valve? You have to be careful, because a good fit isn't everything. Some of these new Toyotas have electronically controlled oil pumps to help compensate for different oil filter flow characteristics, but most cars on the road these days don't - they just run flat out. Also consider that the viscosity of the oil can increase between oil changes, so a little filter that works just fine at the manufacture's initial target velocity may begin to have trouble passing oil if you wait too long to get an oil change. To further complicate the situation, not all oil labeled with the same viscosity rating really has the same viscosity. For example, 5W20 oil is really a small range of possible viscosities. High mileage 5W20 is going to be a little thicker than 5W20 synthetic, to help protect a worn engine better. But, the slightly increased viscosity within the 5W20 range is going to slightly reduced gas mileage and slightly reduce available oil pressure. (because thicker oil requires more effort from the oil pump to squeeze through the oil filter.) None of this matters much to the typical car owner though, as long as the oil is changed frequently, and you use a good filter and the recommended oil. In my opinion, Nissan wouldn't be using those dinky little oil filters on their big truck engines if it wasn't safe. I am sure they have carefully evaluated the use of small filters, and determined that the cost and benefits of using the same little filter across their product line outweighs the downside of using little filters on big trucks. Customers are very cost sensitive when they are buying a new vehicle. The auto market is very competitive, and every nickel saved to build a new vehicle increases marketability and profit.

    Did I miss something? You showed an extra layer of filter material wrapped around the pleated inner filter on only one of these. How are they considered identical without ever mentioning that extra layer? I kept going back to that section repeatedly and can't find any comment which addresses this apparent difference between the two. Thanks!

      PS. I used to use the more expensive Fram filters from Walmart but noticed slight rust beginning to form on the steel base plates on random samples right in the store several years ago. Has anyone else ever noticed rusting on other filters from Walmart or any other sellers ? Because of this I switched back to the super tech brand which appeared to be of reasonably good quality and are no doubt made by one of the major name brand filter manufacturers anyway.

      That wasn't extra media on the filter, the blue filter had been opened in a past video and I was just comparing the two. 0:57 in the video.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 роки тому +1

      No, not really, but if you want a bigger oil filter the Supertech 7317 is a little bigger and fits on the same vehicles as these 6607 oil filters.

    I just picked up a blue Supertech MP6607 which is for synthetic oil and 20,000 miles. I checked Walmart's website and it says "looks like this doesn't fit your car" However the ST6607 does! What? I also found a Castrol CAS66607 20,000 mile synthetic oil filter that fits my car. What gives? I'm confused. I usually use a Purolator PL14459, which has a wider can, but the gaskets match up.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  2 роки тому +1

      Don't go by their website, I noticed that sometimes it's off. And if you use a 6607 and you have the space you can go a larger 7317 oil filter.
