      I don't think anyone hates Garp, but similarly no one is defending Garp as a good parent, at the end of the day his parenting is what lead to him living with regrets, having to see his grandsons become pirates, and living stranded from his Son who became the most wanted man in the world

    I really wonder how Luffy feels about Garp. Their last interaction was the punch at Marineford, which was immediately followed by the death of Luffy's brother at the hands of the Marines-with Garp present. In the 10+ years since Marineford we haven't had even a panel of Luffy thinking about or mentioning Garp. We genuinely do not know how Luffy feels about Garp or his dilemma. It'd be interesting to see how he feels about him and how they will interact if they ever see each other again

      I think Luffy still loves Garp all the same. He and Garp have a lot in common even their values about freedom. Garp despite not liking Luffy being a pirate fundamentally respects his choice and lets him live his life, consequences and all. Luffy's the same but it still hurts to be on opposite sides unless it's in private. He and Ace long ago acknowledged they'd have to fight Garp to keep their dreams (not to such tragedy but it was still their choices that lead to that outcome.)

    Oda actually portrays the generational gap between the Monkey D. family so well. Garp being the conservative grandad who even though possesses some black & white world views he still has a good heart, Dragon who, whilst being a revolutionary, approaches it in a very methodical fashion and only hates the celestial dragons and not the kings who stand below them and then lastly Luffy being Gen Z doing whatever the hell he wants.

    The picture of Garp doesn’t only indicate his personality mirrors Luffy; young Garp carrying the rod as a child while on a tiger also suggests his upbringing was similar to that of Luffy’s too. We know Luffy, Ace, and Sabo used to all carry a similar rod to the one Garp has on their adventures, and part of Luffy’s trials as a child was the struggle to survive and overcome the wilderness.

    One thing people often overlook is that Garp is friends with and mentored countless marines over the span of decades, the marines at Marineford were his nakama, so while Ace was family, Ace's nakama were attacking his, which only added to his inner turmoil. I think a lot of people shift the blame on Garp, but Ace's stubborness lead to his demise, because he underestimated Blackbeard.

    The problem with Garp is that many readers are quite simply too young to understand his perspective. Which is not a diss, his dilemmas are things adults encounter in later life. For example, you can't just tell a father or mother who is working a low paid job to quit it and open a business. They have a responsibility for their families. So, they need to make difficult decisions which upon a superficial glance seem stupid. Naturally most teens and young adults won't be able to relate to such a perspective. Garp is one of the parental figures of the show and those in my opinion are notoriously misunderstood.
    In fact, here's a hot take: The reason so many people love Whitebeard is because we all can relate to having (or at worst wanting) a good loving father. Extremely few people talk about his perspective of wanting to be the parent, growing your own family, etc. It's always the perspective of wanting to have a parent like him. The one and only person I ever saw relating to his role as a parent was Merphy Napier who sees herself as a similar sort of mother figure for her friends (according to herself). At least among the typical well known One Piece youtubers.

    • @ReiseLukas
      @ReiseLukas Рік тому +27

      This is why One Piece isn't technically just for Young Men (Shonen) it's for all ages. There's always more to learn within One Piece and as one grows up and has a family, they can look back at this story and find more things to understand

    • @Abdullah-uh4eu
      @Abdullah-uh4eu Рік тому +26

      I think you also forgot to mention that Merphy herself was in the process of adopting a child when she read about Whitebeard, so it cuts even deeper for her. Whitebeard is not only a character, but an ideal of what Merphy herself wants to be for her adoptive child.

    • @DunklerZebralord
      @DunklerZebralord Рік тому +24

      @@Abdullah-uh4eu Yes, that's absolutely true. And that just further proves my point because obviously, what teen or young adult can relate to wanting to adopt a child or having adopted children? It’s impossible for him to be the best written character when there are dozens with much more exposition and fleshing out. Garp is one of those characters I've been fascinated to learn more about. His goofy antics are great but you can tell there's a ton of history, given his relation to Roger, Xebec and the World Government at large. For example, a part of me theorizes that the reason why Garp was so hard on Luffy and Ace was because Dragon was a former Marine, and him leaving and forming the Revolutionary Army made him want the two to stay in the Marines as a means to prevent them from suffering. Though, you could make the argument that Ace and Luffy's lineages would always haunt them. All in all, my theorizing aside, I look forward to learn more about the Hero of the Marines.

He himself thinks he failed because he wanted them to become good marines but they did indeed inherit his sense of justice and that being good and helping others is whats important. Luffy just wanted to be free while doing so and he also wanted everyone else to be free and be able to eat as much as they like

    Garp spent his whole life trying to stop Ace from being a pirate. He knew where it would get him. He knew who Ace was. He knew what he’d have to do if Ace didn’t listen, that’s why he pushed so hard.
    Ace made his choice. He was a pirate. If Garp saved Ace without him asking, he’d be disrespecting Ace as both a man and a pirate.

    Garp’s ultimatum of having to choose between Garp: the Hero of the Marines and Garp: the Grandfather of Ace and Luffy is probably what made Luffy so against the idea of being seen as a “hero” by the people he helps.
    Luffy had to watch helplessly as one of the only other people who loved Ace as much as he did was made to help put him to death. Garp was forced to choose between his responsibility as the Hero and his love for Ace, and in the end he wound up not being able to fight on either side because of this gridlock.

In a way, you could make the argument it was inevitable, fated to happen given Ace's lineage and the choice Ace made. Nuance in stories has always been something I appreciate. The idea that choices aren't so black and white(even in a black and white story) and there are shades of grey. Stories where they encourage people to think rather than telling those how to think I prefer.

It's possible that Ace being killed through execution was scene as a hand of justice. While Akainu killing him was more a personal killing because he was never meant to kill Ace in battle. It's almost like vigilantism. It is very similar to a criminal getting the death penalty through a fair trial as opposed to being killed by the police on the street. one of the scenes in MF that send chills down my spine everytime i think about it even till this day is when Garp confronted Luffy just before he reaches Ace. like you said, that was the defying moment for Garp's entire internal struggle that he has been dealing with throughout the whole saga, his sense of duty, justice, and the responsibility he carries on his shoulder as the greatest pillar of hope for the marines, versus his father's heart. standing before him and behind him are the 2 people he loves the most in this world, his 2 grandsons, then we see a quick panel of him from behind showing the marine coat he is wearing with "Justice" written on it, symbolizing again the tremendous weight he is carrying as the Great Marine Hero and what it would mean for him to fail his mission. and at that moment, he must make a choice, obliterate and annihilate this "pirate" in a Strawhat running at him, or letting his grandson through. and the most beautiful part is he was so conflicted, the guilt was weighting down on his heart so much that he couldnt really made a choice in the end, he decided to close his eyes, and let fate do it's thing. and when Ace was saved, he just sit there on the ground, hoping that he made the right choice, only for everything to be snapped away by Akainu. the characterisation, the emotion, everything was so raw and beautifully written. Garp will always be one of my favorite characters in the series thanks to that scene.

    Thank you for making this video Morj. I've always said, IMO, Pops was the selfish one in this conflict. Garp made the opposite of a selfish choice by choosing the safety of countless innocents over his own urge to save his child's life, while Pops threw away the safety of the civilians living in his empire to fight a battle he **knew** himself and most of his army wouldn't come back from just to safe his child.
    Even if Ace did get rescued, it was still a very bad choice to go to war like that. The very reason none of the five superpowers go to war with each other (the same reason Pops couldn't save Wano from Kaido) is because win or lose their empire would almost certainly take a blow it will never recover from. Pops let his emotions and pride overrule his logic and made an awful decision, while Garp had the willpower to make the right decision despite how much it destroyed him.

    I think what’s interesting is the idea of heroism and the comparison between Garp and Luffy.
    I think Luffy is a hero on a micro level but not a macro level. He doesn’t have any care about society on a macro level, just cares about helping individuals as and when he comes across them.
    Garp is a hero on a macro level, but not a micro one. He cares about systems that protect the most amount of people possible and rules and order, but in the world of One Piece, there’s a bit of a dilemma there because the only body currently capable of protecting that law and order is tyrannical and that greyness tears him apart a bit.

      We even have characters react to the reveal by saying "Dragon is Garp's son?!" and Garp doesn't correct them. He just goes "oops!"

    Another thing I've seen Garp criticized is his "abusive" way of raising Luffy, but I always thought part of the reason he raised him in so radical a manner is that he's trying the opposite of however Dragon was raised, in hopes he reaches a different path. Maybe Garp had already tried some choices we criticize him for not doing, and grew disillusioned at its results specifically because of how Dragon ended up. It's another layer to making Garp a morally gray and tragic character.

      @havewissmart9602 i wouldn't say Dragon was raised comfortably, but I dont think he was raised the same. He hid away Ace because of notorious father. He eventually moved away Luffy there too as Dragon became notorious. I dont believe how Luffy was raised was Garp's first choice. While its a 50/50 on whether Garp was involved with raising Dragon, I think the way Luffy was raised was definitely because of whatever happened with his parents, and I think that definitely influenced how Garp approached Luffy

    I strongly disagree with a lot of what this video says and believe that it gives the World Government way too much leeway. No offense to Morj but a lot of nuance is missing
    1. The World Government creates pirates: The world government was directly and indirectly create so many pirates in the one piece world that it makes me think that if they never existed there would be total peace. The World Government created Ace, Roger, Law, Nami, Boa, Jimbe, Arlong, Fisher Tiger, Kuma and WAY more characters in this series and this video in no way mentions that. Also the idea that pirates are capable of doing an Ohara is absolutely insane, Imu HAS DESTROYED TWO islands with a mysterious weapon and we don’t even know what happened during the Void century so i reject the idea pirates have the capability of creating an Ohara like incident because the worse we’ve seen a pirate do is arguably Wano and that is a way better fate to live through than your entire island being vaporized completely
    2. The Warlords: The World Government literally teams up with the same dictatorial pirates this video mentions, Crocodile and Doflamingo are some of the most morally corrupt and evil pirates we’ve seen in this series and they were allies of the World Government, its very similar to how the USA supports facist dictators when they overthrew democratic elected governments simply so that they had some influence in the region
    3. Propaganda: This video straight up ignores the amount of propaganda the World Government has pumped out into the world and how much people believe it to be true even Moji. There are in no way millions of pirates out there in the one piece world thats a lie. So many characters we’ve met have never even seen a real pirate but they still fear them anyway due to the propaganda by the WGE, they do this to control the masses and make them side with them even though they are the ones that poison their food, water and land be it by immoral experiments by Dr Vegapunk and Dr Ceaser Clown or the spread of disease they failed to stop with Laws home country.
    The idea that there is a “right” time to have a revolution is laughable because there never is. Yes people will die and suffer in the short run due to the absence of the world entity that controlled everything but in the long run there will be peace. The Celestial Dragons and Imu will be gone and so will all the horrors they made the people face

    Yes, Garp did chose justice and duty over his own family. He did it not to boost his ego, but to show the world that he was still sensible.
    He declined being put under the leash of the same reason some of the people chose a life of piracy, being a rebel, or hide somewhere out of World Government's claws. He did things to save innocent people from violent pirates, extremists and criminals.
    He fought for justice. He fought for what he sees was truth.
    The downsides are, he chose to be mute for what is really happening. He saw what Celestial Dragons and the World Government had done to the same people he supposed to protect, turning a blind eye to the enslavement rampages of the clowns in fishbowl and spacesuits. He ignored the corruption of the same department he was. He just watched as his own family torn apart, just for the justice he knew. He let his friends on both sides take the flak. He let his son rebel. He let his grandson suffer. He let Dadan grieve. He failed Gold Roger. He failed the innocents victimised by the Celestial Dragons and the Pirates.
    Yes, Garp was a gray moral boundary between chaotic and anarchistic ways of those who wanted freedom, and the fakery of the government he serves and the rules it made.
    Garp was written like that to see if there were someone still good on this world.

    I can never forgive Garp. Luffy’s negative reactions every time he sees Garp kind of says he’s got some real child abuse trauma. He also was well aware the Marines were killing pregnant women and babies and did nothing. People all the time talk about how much it hurt him that Ace was killed, but he was still actively a participant in his murder. He puts his job above innocent lives.

    I have a theory about why 3 Monkey D chose a different path.
    Garp was born and grew up during the high of Rock Pirates's reign of terror. That's mean he saw the worst of the pirates. So it's was normal for him to have to step up and defend people's freedom from Rock. Roger was exceptional as a heroic rogue that meets Garp when he was marine.
    Dragon, on the other hand. Saw what happened to his hometown Goa Kingdom has done to Grey Terminal during Celestial Dragon visited (not to mention he might see the same situation when he was on travel). That means he saw the worst of the government have done. That's why he became a revolutionary.
    Luffy has the same experience as Dragon. But because he has Shanks as a father figure and was raised by honorable bandits (under Garp training). That means Luffy has a firm believer that he can do what he wants to do (exploring and saving people) if he becomes an outlaw.

    I think if Garp is a leader of SWORD then it would hammer home that point that he cant go against the marines due to everything hes been working towards. After being one of the few high up good examples in the marines, what kind of message does it show if the greatest marine of all time suddenly loses all faith in the marines. What does that tell the next generation. That its just hopeless? Hes in such a tough spot and I genuinely believe one of the most underrated characters in the series. So giving him a big role like the founder of SWORD would really help show the true dilemma hes in and will help show that everything he sacrificed will be worth it in the end if they achieve their goals.

    man this is such a good video. i haven't read one piece in a while and this made me remember how important marines like garp, koby, aokiji, and smoker are. pirates are not the good guys, we're just following the story of a good pirate

  • @bakshev
    @bakshev Рік тому +1

    I disagree. The marines were mostly incompetent during Marineford and are the same after timeskip. For example Arlong was occupying and terrorizing Nami's village for what 10 years and the Marines weren't even aware of that if I remember correctly. Kid was massacring civilians since pre-timeskip and the one to take him down was Shanks not the Marines. The worst of the worst pirates out there is Blackbeard and he's never shown killing civilians for the fun of it. Maybe he has, it's just not mentioned. If the Marines were doing such a good job protecting the civilians there wouldn't be that many pirate attacks on different islands. Even if we exclude Ohara, the Marines did exactly nothing when the nobles tried to massacre the Goa kingdom's poor. So, they just serve as enforcers for the world nobles with the occasional capture of pirates of the caliber of captain Kuro (but dumber) to keep appearances.

    All very true. One of the coolest things about one piece is that we follow a very small snapshot - strawhats, red hair, revolutionary. They’re the current generation. 3 of the most notorious organizations in the world, and honestly in history. But we just happen to be following them and know that they’re forces of good. We got a good look at other noble legends like Roger and Whitebeard, we saw what happened to Ace, and we’ve seen plenty of the evil side of the marines. This is all on purpose of course, making it very easy for us to see the marines as the main enemy. But when we look beyond our snapshot and view the world as a whole, most people see the complete opposite and for very good reason. Most people aren’t from Ohara, most people don’t know who luffy or shanks are outside of their bounty pictures. Most people have their lives threatened or ruined by pirates and are saved by the Garps and Kobys. And that matters, it’s not like they’re just living some lie. That’s the real truth of the world, even though the government is hiding serious stuff it’s not like people are being brainwashed. The marines really are largely a force of good fighting a force of evil, while also protecting a force of evil. It’s all very complex
