Truly grateful to Royal opera house and Royal Ballet for being so generous with your rehearsal streams and uploads. You are truly in the forefront of opera houses in the world when it comes to share videos and live streams on UA-cam.
Monica Mason seems like a dream to work with! she's extremely kind and polite, yet still posesses an incredible ability to pass the knowledge onto those she is teaching
This rehearsal was the first time I learned that ballet can have "dialogue" with standardized mimes for important words. It really opened my eyes to a whole other dimension of the art that I had never known about, and I can now appreciate ballet much more. Thank you very much! Carabosse's entrance is now one of my favorite scenes in all of ballet because of this experience.
Ballet is a mysterious world for most men, even those that are keen followers of opera and the classical music repertoire. These broadcasts give us, men, an insight into the athleticism and artistic interpretation of ballet, the absence of which makes it much harder for me, at least, to appreciate what I am seeing. Thank you for allowing us to view your rehearsals, you do ballet a great service by organising these broadcasts.
I love these videos and live streaming. Being retired and living in Hungary, they keep me connected to my ballet heritage. What a wonderful way to share the world of dance.
Just saw a rehearsal of this scene from 5 years ago when Kristen McNally was new to the part, she seemed insignificant - until she started incorporating Monica Mason's corrections. Immediately, she became Carabosse. She understood what was being described, she was transformed. Kristen McNally is one of my favorite dancers in the company because she has such an inner fire. Much underestimated.
Love these videos! Anything with Dame Monica is guaranteed to be fantastic. But really, of all the presenters, this one, Kristen?, was fantastic. ROH, please do have her again, as she is exemplary in leading a discussion compared to your other presenters.
What more can one say about Monica that hasnt already been said even though she dances no more she is an inspiring and so instructive teacher= I remember always loving how she brought real drama to her roles but never going over the top so it seemed forced or false a bit like Lynn Seymour another brilliant dramatic dancer
Poor Olivia, she is sadly underpowered in this role. Kristen McNally has absolutely no inhibitions as the wicked fairy. Olivia needs to let loose her inner devil! Kristen is a joy to watch. I love Monica Mason's mastery, her total theatricality.
Olivia is learning the role just now. First thing, she's got to learn the acting - choreography, which is not easy. It's obvious that she doesn't know it by heart yet and she's being coached by these two wonderful Carabosses. After this phase of learning, she's going to be able to build the character she's playing over the choreography she's learnt and so she will begin to act her mean Carabosse in her own personal way. She'll make it! I've seen her on stage and, believe me, she's got all the talent to be as great Carabosse as her wonderful coaches. She just needs some rehearsal time.
I appreciate your explanation. I haven''t seen Olivia in performance, and I am sure your confidence will be well-placed as she learns the choreography and becomes comfortable in the role.
This was her very first rehearsal for this part, you can't expect perfection… Olivia is an incredible dancer and a brilliant actress. She was absolutely wicked in Carbon Life.
I will admit that I LITERALLY canNOT DANCE FOR TOFFEE!!!!!!!!!!!! But I have always loved the beauty and the grace of ballet, ESPECIALLY point work!!!!!!!!!!
I met a ballet teacher in Cuba, at Laura's Alonso school. Raymond Koning, i cant toke class with him but, is a important person for Royal Ballet i guesd
Dear Royal ballet, I love. your ballet company. But when you live stream performance's .Do you think you could also live stream it through UA-cam? from, Graham
The main thing is Olivia Cowley needs to come out of the airy, fairy realm and down into her gut. She’ll have to learn how to ground herself, literally, and for this role, get rid of all her ballerina mannerisms. It’s a tall order to be sure, a real challenge, but one that she seems happy to meet.
This is a little bit digressive, but yesterday I was watching an interview on UA-cam with a famous writer/pundit, who is probably about the same age as Dame Monica. As an aging woman myself it was a little bit scary to see how awful that particular woman looked....not just old but scary looking. (she had been a beauty as a young woman). Seeing Dame Monica restored my faith, that with a beautiful spirit a woman can age with grace and strength-Dame Monica has white hair and many wrinkles and pouches, but she moves with freedom and power, and her beauty is still there.
Carabosse should be danced by a man, as was done originally with Enrico Cecchetti and then Vasiliy Geltser. Carabosse is a symbol of disease and death---what all new mothers fear for their baby. Anthony Dowell in 1994 was hair-raising. Except for Monica, most females I've seen lack strangeness, power, horror. Women in other productions often seem like mere court ladies in a snit. Dancers studying to be Carabosse---and the roles of KIng and Queen---should consult the tape of the 1994 Royal Ballet production.
Samantha Rane (or whatever is her last name) gives absolutely wrong corrections about the upper body and hands at 1:01:40. Pity for the poor dancer. She is screaming all the time the words "over" and "forward"! Omg is she an Rad teacher? So sad.

Anna Rose is such a beautiful dancer! Very much looking forward to seeing how her career develops.
She got promoted to principal in 2021!

Ellisa Cobb o
Great to see Tierney, not only is she a good soloist but she comes from just down the road from where I live.
Tierney, Anna Rose and Samantha are all so beautiful!
Monica Mason is really great, she is the best carabosse ever!
What an amazing rehearsal video yet again! There are future principals in these two girls, no doubt, they're excellent.
Wow - what an insight - lovely to see, especially Sam Raine - a huge inspiration to us in Malton!! x
There's so much theatre in ballet, never thought about that before.
Seriously? What else would ballet be?
I enjoyed watch ii in Athens! Thank you ROH!!!

Monica Mason still acts and mimes better than anyone else, these dancers need to just copy exactly what Monica does. She is an absolute treasure. ❤️
Monica Mason is an excellent actress, I felt worried for her asOlivia was coming after her with the stick. She's still got it!
My favorite ballet
I will admit that I LITERALLY canNOT DANCE FOR TOFFEE!!!!!!!!!!!! But I have always loved the beauty and the grace of ballet, ESPECIALLY point work!!!!!!!!!!

ANNA ROSE IS THE BEST DOING THIS VARIATION
