My QANTAS A330 BUSINESS CLASS trick

- Flying Business Class in a Qantas A330 from Bali to Australia. The good and bad of using points to upgrade. See how we got extra status credits for this flight, how many points it cost to upgrade, and why the A330 is a use of points for a business class upgrade.
I'm flying from Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) to Melbourne Tullamarine on a Qantas Airbus A330 via Sydney International Airport. See the business class cabin, the fully flatbed seat, the price we paid, why using points for an Airbus A330 is better than on a Boeing 737 with Qantas, and see how many points it costs to upgrade to business class from economy.

Love that the video is 7:37 minutes long!
I love that you noticed that :) Nice one Daniel.
Damn!! Just needed another 10 seconds
Great video and thanks for the tips Stef! I never would have considered that than option and I'm always chasing those final status credit points at the eleventh hour! Many thanks :)
2:29 Didn’t know you could throttle back using your seat controls.
When I pressed the light switch we turned left...
Previously flying the majority of sectors, chances of an upgrade in these larger planes was greater. Good to see you back on deck. Cheers
Otto
Great video and liked the comments on the Bali lounge as “fine”. Thats never good…..
Aw, Stef mate, you need two hair cuts, one won't be enough LOL! Great Vid, cheers :)
he allready went there but he is going back tomorow to finish it hahahahahah
@@timburggraaf6823 Short back and laser beam, down to the wood? LOL! Cheers
Haha, nah I reckon I can make this one last through to 2021 lads... 😅
I prefer to pronounce it Le' Bourne but L'Bourne works.. haha also love your response to the toilet anouncement while putting your PJs on
Ooh I like "Le'Bourne", makes us sound very fancy.
Great advice as always Stef with the Qantas bookings etc and the upgrades as well !! Its a bloody minefield if you don't travel a lot or understand how it works !! Looked like a great holiday and I have sent you an email as well !! Thanks mate...great stuff as always !!
Thanks Craig, shot you a response this morning. Apologies for the delay.
@@StefanDrury Didn't seem to come through...know you have been busy !!
Ahhhhhh those points upgrades... makes us airline employees staff travel prospects a nightmare... 😂😂☹️☹️☹️
Sorry if I took your seat...
Stefan Drury haha no worries! 😃 As long as we get a seat it’s all good! But points upgrades have definitely made it harder for J upgrades 🤘🤘
Hi Stefan, you are so correct about choosing to fly the A 330 and taking a chance on upgrading after selecting the craft. I reckon the B 737 ought to be phased out as it’s business class seating is worse than the Euro type Business seat. Regrettably, with the B 787 taking over many of the cross Pacific routes to and from the US, the B 787 has greatly diminished the chance of getting an upgrade. With the B747 and A380
Danm Stef that was the best travel hack on the Bali-Melbourne route lve ever heard. Ive done that one 8 times (in Business Class) and l know we get the smaller planes. Ive never thought about doing your hack! A couple of times lve used Garuda because they offered a bigger plane but then they swapped it and l was really dissapointed. Im going to do this now probably not Melbourne-Bali but definitely on my return as its an overnight flight. 👍👍
Glad to help, as long as you don't mind the hassle of the transit at Sydney and have some extra time, it's definitely worth it in my opinion.
Loving your vids keep it up!
On yeah bro today!
2:37 “bluh bluh bluh bluh blu blu. Bluh” to be exact
I'm more of a get the bonus points with credit cards, pay them off immediately, and buy wine with Qantas kind of guy. $4000 of wine (with a bonus point credit card) can get you up to 400,000 points. Free flight first class to Europe return (pretty much no including airport taxes) and you keep the wine.
Good advice Stef, thank you, although I hope that Qantas doesn't watch your tips and make changes to their system to close the advantage - which, even though I'm a fan of the airline, wouldn't surprise me!
Thanks Paul, I hope so too. I've used the 'A330 upgrade' a few times now, flying domestically as well.
We did a Gold status secure run MEL- AKL in J last year, return journey to MEL was cancelled so we had to go via Bris vegas! double status so got an extra 60 for the BNE- Mel leg
We got home only 2 hours later than originally planned so all good and plenty of credits in the bank
I guess that’s why when looking for international flights, the cheapest ones are always the ones that leave late, have long layovers and multiple stops. Airlines know people will pay more to get to their destination faster...why is why you probably why they give you the option of multiple flights to get to your final destination, as it fills up seats elsewhere in the airlines network.
Hi Stefan
We tried the same upgrade and they declined our upgrade unless we had gold status.😭😭 but awesome video again. Keep up the great work
Always great videos - how are things in Aus now? Seems to have dropped off the radar in UK ?
Thank you - we still have fires burning and even though we've had some rain recently there are still many areas affected. It's still a very scary situation for many people.
Of course its dropped of the radar, some other more exciting News story has taken its place. Unfortunately thats the problem and thats where the heartache begins, the rebuilding of these communities becomes tough when the eyes and ears of the world have gone. Really appreciated you still thinking of us and asking. Cheers from Melbourne (L, Bourne🤣) and have a great weekend👍
Anyone else note Stef for 7,747 QF points in Jan? 🤔 That must have been a carefully planned spend in Dec just for this vid 😉😂
Love the tips, also love the video being 7:37 mins long
I tweaked the ending to make that happen, thanks for noticing :)
Hi Stef, hope all is well for you and your family, as a football fan, here in the UK,you may have already seen this, but if not, there is a charity game being played in Sydney's ANZ Stadium on Saturday, 23 May for the Bushfire appeal, just appeared on the BBC website > www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51277309. Nothing to do with aviation, but just shows that people have not forgotten the crisis out there.
4:55 Seems like a tax only extra. These can be as cheap as ~$5-6 extra if you're flying in the US and you can (sometimes) add 3-4.
I prefer the b737 mainly beacuse of the free wifi in flight
Hey! Fantastic Video! Any idea on the Tail number of the a330 you were on?
Thanks Lachlan, sorry I didn't get it this time.
@@StefanDrury No worries! Looking forward to your next video! :)
Are you of Italian extraction?
Stay safe. Hope for rain
Thanks mate, yeah we need lots more of that.
Kind of a drag that you upgrade to Business Class and just sleep the whole time !!
As it was an overnight flight the sleep was actually quite important, the flight landed early the next day. So a flatbed means a better sleep and I wake up the next day better rested. I generally consider business class for a) workspace and b) the seat comfort for sleeping. Not worried about the IFE or food.
First question, Bali?
Did you upgrade from 'Sale' fare or from 'Saver' Fare? Because I didnt think that you could upgrade from Sale, Thanks!
Domestic you can. International you can’t.
I’m trying to book 2 Qantas business class award seats using points - do you know if it is possible to check the seat availability before booking the flights? Just want to make sure we can get two adjacent seats.
I’m guessing customer service should be Abel to help with this but they ask not to call unless you are flying within a week.
Hey Eshan, the Qantas website is very good for checking seats if you booked through them. Go to Manage Booking and you should be able to see a seat map with your selection. That may depend on your fare type and who you booked it through though.
The most important question, does your wifey appreciate all the extra stops for one flight of business class. And does she enjoy the long explanation of why you frequently take the longer route . Rhetorical.
Bali..... So overrun and touristic, sir you are a tourist, not a traveler.
One thing I can say Qantas is crap! There’s nothing exciting about that airline! Period! 🤮
omg epic trick. pay more money, waste more points, be separated from your loved one, waste extra time and delay your arrival by adding a layover for no reason, then add in extra carbon emissions for you taking 2 flights instead of 1 so you can help crap over the environment. omg life hack so amazing thanks so much
soClose Yea!! Not like he explained why his advice might lead to several more aircraft options and actually points saved! And yea that second plane totally wasn’t going to fly anyways regardless if he was on it or not! What a total buffoon!
Hey, Total Buffoon here. I thought this video would help those travellers who are a) looking to earn extra status credits for less money and b) want to get the best experience when spending valuable points on an upgrade to business class. From the majority of other comments it appears this has been helpful to many, but I'm sorry you both feel this was not. I'd simply suggest you therefore ignore this video and kindly move on to the next one rather than throwing negativity around on my channel. Thanks, stef
@@StefanDrury Well said ! Some people are never happy, and despite their pitiful life, they feel THEIR opinions are more important than others. You simply highlighted one way to travel that fits your lifestyle. Because that option does not fit others preference does not mean you are requiring anyone to do what you suggest. This is why they make both vanilla and chocolate ice cream ! Options! As my parents always said "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything." Great video !
@@ShadowFreedum "the plane would fly there anyway" is a dumb argument. having an extra person there may impact their algorithms and cause them to schedule more flights in the future to handle the traffic. hell, even qantas themselves let you offset carbon on a PER FLIGHT basis. so you think every single person on the plane can say "they're gonna fly there anyway so i don't contribute anything to carbon emissions"... then what? the plane still flies and contributes and no one takes responsibility according to your rules.
@stefan drury, don't take it personally. i personally find the strategy quite strange but feel free to keep creating content and don't feel bad. thanks
soClose You’re grossly overestimating the impact one frequent flier has on entire plane schedules... let alone the impact planes have on global carbon emissions. Lol even dairy production contributes more to carbon emissions than the entire aviation industry. If you want to save the planet, do it somewhere else. Aviation is a minute contributor. Btw putting words into someone else’s argument like “don’t contribute ANYTHING to carbon emissions” is, in and of itself, a logical fallacy. So try again friend!
Excellent! As a VA girl disappointed no chance for this with a sprinkling of 330 in their fleet ... thanks Stef! X
I'm very keen to do some flying with Virgin this year. Haven't flown with them for a while but I generally hear good things, and their lounges are usually really nice too.
Good God...8 hrs on a 737? That A330 was a wise choice 👍
Stefan,
That poor girl, however, thank you for your consideration......:)
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Do we know why Qantas don't provide premium economy on their A330s? Also, surely a 737 would be a little uncomfortable for a flight to Melbourne of that length, even in business class? 🤔
i really wish American Airlines used the status credits model over EQD+EQM
Awesome tip! Thank you 🙏🏽
Hey I love your content I myself live in Melbourne, I have an uncle based out of Sydney that flies the A330 and I asked him if he flew from Bali to Sydney about 3 days ago and turns out he did, could of been my uncle flying your aircraft
Love your videos mate. As soon as i get a notification in my email. Its game on.
Keep on posting. Lets get you to a 1m+ Subscribers 💪🏾
Hey Lumanix thanks for the message, and thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate the support mate.
Good video and hack tip Stef, mighty fine aircraft, although your co-passenger obviously disagreed.!
Haha, yep they weren't enjoying the A330 experience. Thanks T9909.
Love your tips! Our family loves accumulating QFF points to help with upgrades and classic rewards. We’ve been upgraded to First Class 3 times now. Happy flying.
Wow, that's good! Glad you found the tips useful, thanks Anne.
Wow he is a sleepy head I say oof
Great tips as always Stef. Got up this morning to more smoke, we need more rain. Thanks mate
Yeah I heard some areas around Canberra are getting it bad again today. Stay safe Spiro.
Great tips Stef. And cool to see the circuit coming to life again. We’ll be there for the race in March!
Awesome, I love the F1. Just two months to go...
Stefan Drury yes, can’t wait!
Thanks Stef. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching.
AS always great video mate
Thanks for watching Robert.
Keep up the good work sir.
Thanks for watching Chakshu.
I'm a subscriber for airplane reasons, but I decided to give your travel vlog stuff a try. Nope. Not for me.
Two days ago I got off a 2 hour flight (TPA - CVG) on a 737-800 with my wife and three kids. Yes. Three kids. Business class is a ways off for this group of yahoos.
Always great listening to your travel tips on Qantas! Thank you Stefan!
Thanks for watching, glad you found that useful.
