I know this is a late comment, but I wanted to say that this video was not only very well shot and edited, but it also taught me a thing or two about not panicking when flights get delayed or things don’t work out the way you planned. Thanks again!
We did MEL-LAX-LHR a few weeks back. Slept on MEL-LAX (2130 dep and 1800 arr) then awake on LAX-LHR (2130 dep and 1530 arr). Went to sleep at about 2200L and woke up the next morning feeling wonderful! Enjoy Europe!
My anti-jet lag strategy is to force myself to stay up and active (whether out for a walk or with friends in a restaurant) until 11pm at my destination, then when I go to bed I’m exhausted enough to nod right off and I sleep until 5am or 6am in the morning. Then I can have a normal day. On the second night’s sleep there’ll be a wake-up hour where I toss and turn a bit in the middle of the night. The wake-up hour moves by an hour per day until it lines up with daytime, and then my jet lag is basically over.
Just subscribed. I hope Darren James watched this new Video. I have flown Emirates many times to Europe but unfortunately only in cattle class. Have had a few short breaks in Dubai. Enjoyed out times there, and the flights!!!
Great video Stef, I had the same experience of missing my Emirates connection in Dubai. It actually is a bonus, they put you up in a five star hotel, it cures the jet lag and enhances the trip.
De-icing: with the exception of possibly Charles de Gaulle (with its overhead gantry) this always seems to involve extra delays - in Vancouver for example you’d think they’d never seen snow & ice! Jet-lag: after a lifetime career of doing this what works for me is to force yourself to say awake on arrival until local night and then take a sleeping pill. Emirates: if you were being critical, why on earth have they reverted to the 2+3+2 configuration Business Class on the B777? It’s awful, back to the bad old days of having to climb over someone (or be climbed over) to access the aisle. Great video though!
I flew to the US for a work trip (4 days on the ground) a few years back and a friend suggested getting on the plane then living on the destination time zone straight away (bit easier with the US, stay awake and then sleep), and it worked well. Did the same thing on the return and didnt feel 'the lag' much at all.
I've done the 6am flight out of Sydney a couple of times. I do a stopover in Dubai for 1 night, I think that helps as your body clock "starts" to adjust. The best part is you're checked in for both legs & they keep you checked luggage & you only need to take your carry on bag. Makes it so easy reboarding next day. Did you notice the bus stops on the street are airconditioned?
Emirates are great like that - I also missed a connecting flight from Dubai the last time I flew overseas, and Emirates had new boarding passes and hotel vouchers ready and waiting for those of us impacted when we disembarked. I didn't mind the delay at all for the same reasons as you Stefan.
I loved this video. I went to UK solo via Qantas BC this year and was so spoiled, I wanted a return! So next year my partner and I are going Qantas A380 (787 this year for me) BC to London and then Malta to see her family and for Liz to do her first Ultra marathon. We watched your video this evening and are now planning Paris for her 60th in 2025 and doing another trail race but this time in mainland Europe. Your channel and your journeys I find inspirational and I love that whilst recognising your good fortune, you’re not embarrassed or ashamed of travelling the way you do. I can’t wait to see the rest of this video journey.
Thank you cejay, your comment there really motivates me to keep making videos like this and sharing them. Thank you. I have huge respect for you guys doing an Ultra and sincerely wish you all the best for a brilliant trip in 2025. Thank you again.
I had the “misfortune” of missed connections in San Francisco, London and Hong Kong. Had a great time until the next flight! The jet lag is harder on the return flight. 👍
I try to arrive in the afternoon so I can make my way in to town, have supper and crash. The *second* night is usually the rough one. The only place I never got over my jet lag was Turkey (for the eclipse in 2006). That fact that I loathed the place and don't care if I never set foot there again just might have something to do with it...
I hope you have a lovely time in Europe. If you are near Rotterdam and want a tour, lemme know. Also on the way back from Europe make sure to take extra time at the airport, I hear waiting times can add up to about 3 to 4 hours just to get past tsa
I was once on a Etihad a380 and we were waiting 3-4 hours on the ground off to the side of the taxiway with 2 engines running because the time for boarding was incorrect.
When going to Europe that's 8 hours behind so you just get used to going to bed at 4AM in aussiland, that way you are half way there before leaving, then shield yourself from bright lights on the way so it doesn't contradict the arrival timezone. Basically early day light you don't want so wear sunglasses like a rockstar zombie in the morning on the way. Sleep normally like the 4AM cycle otherwise. then you arrive in Europe with an early bird inclination and just sleep in as much as possible and it falls into place nicely. I did it from Europe to California, works fairly well. The other way you are screwed :) but melatonin is supposed to work wonders taken at desired bedtime. it's a controlled substance in various countries so might need prescription. Louis XIII is 100 year old cognac so gets a little pricey.
Stef, have you tried the “Timeshifter” app? We’ve done it from from Sth America to Au (UIO-ATL-LAX-NAN-BNE) and back and we had practically no jet lag.
I was at the Four Seasons in New York on a business trip with my boss. We had dinner there at The Garden which is unbelievable. Afterwards my boss orders a shot of King Louis VIII cognac. It was $150 per shot. They roll out this table with the actual bottle and and glass. They pour it at your table so you know it's legit. He poured the shot all the way to the top, you could not get another drop in that glass. My boss sipped it for a while until about half was gone and offered the rest to me so I could try it. I appreciate the gesture, but I am not a cognac coinsurer and it would be wasted on me. Anyways, when I saw that bottle in the duty free for $33,330 that made me remember my experience. There's a reason it's so expensive.
I flew to Europe the other week and I tested your theory. It works! But I still kept feeling drowsy when I approached the hours it’d be night back in Oz.😅 Body clock still has to play catch-up I suppose!
It is so awesome to see international travel again! For me, it's those little things like seeing the "Intl. Passengers Beyond this Point Only" or the smell of jet fuel, or the cool air (or warm in your case 😂)as you leave the plane onto the air bridge or even hearing your flight is ready to board. For me, that's what makes it and it's so cool to see someone else who feels that those things matter too so Thank you Stef!
I am not a morning person, but taking stupid early flights and having no traffic on the way to the airport, and a nice quiet, empty airport is reallllllly nice. That said, I like the theory on approaching jet lag for this kind of trip. I'm sure you were a mess when you got to Paris due to the messed up flights, but probably worth trying again when you do this in the future.
Thanks Thomas, yeah it’s great getting to the airport early, beating the traffic and I still get really excited arriving there in the early hours of the morning.
In eight years flying for Ansett, I never de-iced. I didn't know that de-icing was even available! Only flying in Europe have I de-iced ... and I knew the ICAO for CDG, but I don't think that was fair as I fly there every month or so. :)
Alright what is with airlines giving such short layover times. Emirates gave you an hour and a half, I had a Thai airways flight to London where I had a 55 minute layover in Frankfurt. Airports are understaffed. Even without a delay it you need to get through security and to the other gate. If they aren’t going to open up express lanes then airlines need to start adapting
Casey Neistat recently did a video on that swoopy woven organic looking structure as I think it is part of a new Technology experience there. I thought you'd be going to Oshkosh though.
Nothing has changed with Emirates. I first flew with the 18 years ago and almost the exact same thing happened to me out of Melbourne which caused a cascading issue for the rest of my travels to Europe. Emirates couldn’t give stuff and didn’t treat me as a normal fare paying passenger. This has happened to me multiple times since with Emirates and I will never fly with them again as they’re completely unreliable.
This is very interesting. I've only flown Emirates once before, and I missed my connecting flight in Dubai because of a sick passenger on board which meant we had to divert. When we arrived in Dubai, Emirates staff were at the gate waiting with new boarding passes and hotel vouchers for those of us that were effected. I found their service to be fantastic.
@@jimmythetrumpet3632 it got even worse. The last time I flew with them was in 2016 when we had to fly from Rome to Dubai to catch a Qantas flight. The lounge was closed so they had taken some space in an airport restaurant. The flight was late arriving into Rome and we were at real risk of being bumped from our onward Qantas flight. We would have been within 60 minutes of our onward flight, which Emirates always seem to run connecting flights to each other. We ended up catching up time in the air and got in 75 minutes ahead. Emirates staff couldn’t give a stuff and bumped us on a flight to Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur which I was fuming about. Just to make matters even worse myself and my wife both came down with gastro caused by food poisoning from the airport restaurant that Emirates had booked space in. I vowed after that to never fly them ever again as over a period of 12 years and four seperate occasions they managed to stuff up each and every time and not so much as an apology out of them.
Does the heat there slow them down on their daily needs to persecute women and homosexauls? Or do they just plough ahead with the theocracy and imported slave labour abuses regardless of the weather?
Really cool video. I had no idea there even was de-icing equipment in Australia!
I’m smaller communities they have to use a scissor lift to get up high enough
A lot of people don't realise just how big Australia is. It's a whole continent. We've got all sorts of weather.
Last August I saw a charming picture of a fellow walking his dog on the beach with fresh snow on the mountains in the background. Hobart, Tasmania.
@@marsgal42 I live in Hobart, can confirm that's a regular sight during winter.
It’s really common, although Australia has freezing winters as well.
One of the benefits of business class, they generally look after if you if at all goes wrong!
I know this is a late comment, but I wanted to say that this video was not only very well shot and edited, but it also taught me a thing or two about not panicking when flights get delayed or things don’t work out the way you planned. Thanks again!
The views on the flight from Dubai to Europe are simply amazing. I'm always glued to the window on that route.
Dude ya'll got hosted! Holy lucky missed flight batman!
Loved the Windows XP Shutdown Sound at 4:47! Great Video as always! Enjoy Europe!
Loved the video, inside the airports, planes and Dubai!
I really enjoyed the video Stef. Put a smile to my face 🛫

Traveling and in the air again and the zany humour is back 👍

Commenting for the algo - this vid deserves boosted and recommended to everyone. Great vid!
Thanks Lobo, glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoy your trip Stef and thanks for taking us with you.

Amazing video Stef really enjoyed it, going to Geneva in 4 weeks a380 to Dubai and then 777 to Geneva
Awesome, have a great trip Tom
Great video Stef, I had the same experience of missing my Emirates connection in Dubai. It actually is a bonus, they put you up in a five star hotel, it cures the jet lag and enhances the trip.
Agreed on all counts John. I honestly saw it as a bonus to the trip. Hope you had a great trip yourself. Thanks.
Hey Stefan what type of watch is that you use?

Great video Stef, nice you got to experience Dubai - an unexpected bonus!
Great edit Stef! Awesome adventure
Too that works for me is just sleep when you feel like it and time your arriving flight that you land in the late afternoon or evening.
I flew to the US for a work trip (4 days on the ground) a few years back and a friend suggested getting on the plane then living on the destination time zone straight away (bit easier with the US, stay awake and then sleep), and it worked well. Did the same thing on the return and didnt feel 'the lag' much at all.
Really appreciate your better half joining in your video! The $33,000 brandy is just unreal 🤣 Happy travels 🙂

I'll be on the same flight in 3 weeks! Wooohooo!
Have a great flight.
Well at least they had the de icing equipment then :)
The buildings look insane in Dubai, looks definitely worth the heat to go and see.
Cheers Stef

For sleep on a flight I would use those 3M orange couloured ear plugs which supress most of the ambient noise..............
Great vid stef also I'm happy your flying on international again especially the king the A380 of course something happens like the deicing 😬
Add your experience to the reason why we are too old to fly economy! Cheers and thanks!

Is this cost $16K per person?

Qantas pajamas on Emirates flight. Ok 😂🙌🏻
Isent the code for Charles d Gaulle LFPG, and I shud try that jet lag experiment
Can't they use the engine air to de-ice the plane as they would in flight?
Isn´t Jetlag worse flying east?
I live in Europe and going to the states is fine, going home (or travel to asia) is painfull.
How long are you staying in France for? Come and fly in Normandy on my biplane ;)
Dude you live in Australia and think Dubai is hot. I can't cope over 21⁰ so that ticked me.

Yeah the EK crew were saying they’d never had to do that in Melbourne before. I was lucky to experience it.
If you'd just listened to Tim Ferris you would've found out that the best way to combat jet lag is to actually do a work out upon touch down.
Yes, a good run after a long flight is a great way to acclimatise.
Why would Qantas mind if you are wearing their pyjamas on their flight? 🤔

I'm flying with Emirates in about 3 weeks, my connections are VERY long. There and back.
Does your platinum status expire if you don't do X amount of flights per year? Thanks
Sure does. 1200 Qantas status credits in a year to renew it for the next year.
@@MarkNewtonFlies Thank you
ICAO code for Charles de Gaulle is LFPG
Did I hear deicing at more than zero?
Casey Neistat recently did a video on that swoopy woven organic looking structure as I think it is part of a new Technology experience there. I thought you'd be going to Oshkosh though.
Yeah I watched Casey’s video in Dubai. It’s an art gallery I believe, amazing structure. Thanks as always Mike.

I only eat vegan fruit 😂
I bet that de-icing guy hates 380's.
