I'm writing an exam about this on Friday and I've read it at least 4 times. It just hit me that the "small things" that killed him in the end (bees) were used as emblems throughout the entire book to separate paragraphs and I totally missed this clue.

The references to the Sharpville and Sophiatown tragedies made me see why he left out his name, it denounced this fallacy that while the comrades were in prison the rest of 'us' were chilliing at home. Therefore I related to his anger, unrewarded suffering and loss. The ending was my favourite, however I'm having difficulty finding the symbolic meaning for the bees.
I think the fact that he died at the hands of bees might be about the fact that he suffered and overcame so much only to die at the hands of something so trivial. That’s my interpretation though.😊 I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m eager to read more of his books!!
What page where you reading the extract from? I want to read it again and highlight it as I got a lot of warmth from that reading- as opposed to his experience w/Desiree. Thank you for this review- you've made the book so much easier to digest. I was frustrated with the protagonist tbh. He may have gone through changes but it also felt like he was stuck within his philosopy of life- that didn't change even when the environment around him kept changing. Whoo!
