  • Tradition has it that more than three centuries ago, in the city of Córdoba, there lived a young woman who seemed to never grow old despite the passing of the years. No one really knew what her name was or who her parents or other relatives were, they only called her “La Mulata”. There are versions that also say that, since they did not know who her parents were, they called her “Soledad” because she was an orphan.
The legend of the mulatto woman from Córdoba tells the story of a beautiful young woman who, despite the passing of the years, seemed not to age. It is said that, despite being over 50 years old, her beauty and youth did not diminish. This beauty that seemed infinite and endless caused the people of the town to begin to suspect that something strange was happening. How is it possible that someone does not age? This strange characteristic of the mulatto woman from Córdoba led people to think that it could be a case of sorcery or witchcraft. There are even people who theorized that the young woman did not age because she had made a pact with the devil.
It is said that she had the ability to heal with herbs and perform mysterious rituals. Many of the young men in the town were attracted to her because of her beauty. This caused the women of the town to become suspicious of her and spread the rumor that she was practicing witchcraft or that she had a pact with the devil.
The beauty of this young woman caused jealousy among the women of the town, and they spread the rumor that she was a witch. The Holy Office along with other neighbors of the town began to follow her and spy on her to see if the accusations were true. To their disappointment, they were never able to find anything that could incriminate her of witchcraft.
The story also tells that the mayor of Córdoba at that time, Don Martin de Ocoña, would be one of the most important characters in the legend of the mulatto woman of Córdoba. It is said that he also succumbed to the charms of the beautiful young woman. He offered her great fortunes and power in exchange for her becoming his wife, but the young woman rejected him. In retaliation for this rejection, the disgruntled mayor used his power and influence to have the Holy Office accuse her of witchcraft and proceed to condemn her to the stake.
One night, due to the accusations of the mayor, the Holy Inquisition together with the town authorities, captured the mulatto woman of Córdoba, and accused her of witchcraft. She was taken prisoner to a dungeon accused of practicing black magic and sorcery. She was sentenced to the stake and would await this fateful outcome in the darkness of the dungeon to which she was taken.
One day before the execution of the punishment against the young woman, a great storm broke out. One that had not been seen for many years in the town. It is said that that night the jailer entered the dungeon of the supposed witch and was quite surprised to see on one of the walls a ship drawn with a piece of coal. The mulatto woman, seeing that the jailer was approaching, asked him in an ironic tone: what do you think is missing from this ship? The jailer answered that, from that perfectly drawn ship, the only thing missing is that it should go.
The mulatto woman from Córdoba answered that the ship will go. She turned around and stared fixedly at her beautiful drawing. Suddenly, the jailer noticed some movements in the young woman. She took a run and jumped towards the ship she had drawn, and it slowly disappeared from the wall. It is as if the woman had joined the drawing on the wall and made the ship begin its journey, leaving the jailer mute and immobile and terrified by what he had just seen. This is one of the most striking fantastic elements of the legend of the mulatto woman from Córdoba.
Tradition tells that some people from the town, that same night of the events that occurred with the mulatto woman from Córdoba, saw a ship sailing in the waters that disappeared on the horizon. The strange thing about all this is that this event was unthinkable because the port was closed due to the strong storm that was hitting the entire area. Obviously, there are people who claim that the ship that was lost at sea was the same one that the imprisoned young woman had drawn and that had been used to escape from the stake.
It may sound like a fantasy story and that all of this is made up. But one of the real elements of the legend of the mulatto woman from Córdoba is the dungeon where she was imprisoned. This dungeon is part of the Fort of San Juan de Ulúa. A fortress that is outside the city of Veracruz and where the stories of the legend of the mulatto woman from Córdoba are told.
